Title: My Petecraft 22

About a month ago I had delivery of my new boat, a petecraft 22 powered a Yanmar 350hp.  The first photo shows the boat in its first days:

Im happy with this new boat, it's great for fishing and super great for its ride, having a top speed of 47/48mph.

Nice shaftbomb, 350hp in a 22 foot I'm not surprised you dop 47/48mph, 40 knots is plenty. Do let us know what your optimum cruise speed is and at what revs plus if you have an idea of fuel consumption.

If you're planning to go offshore fishing with her, what will you be doing about an auxiliary engine?

Skip regarding your comments, the Yanmar I have in the boat is more suited as a working engine rather than a pleasure engine.  It is 5.3litre and revs 3300.  When its reved 2500-2700 the boat reaches its cruising speed, making 30mph. 
Regarding fuel consumption - i didn't really test it well yet but its not something like out of the ordinary that sucks diesel like a nothing.  Three weeks ago I did  a full day cruising, from Gozo went to malta and back to Gozo visiting like 4 beaches....it was something like Lm40 diesel. 
I have only one engine.....and yes it is on my mind that if i go offshore i will be worried...but for now its gonna stay as is...no money for an auxiliary outbaord! :)  Anyway im going to use it more as a pleasure boat, with around the coast runs and only some alungi trips.

Thats good news, nice to know you have all that power tucked away. Was just trying to look up some specs on your engine but having some problems locating the exact model. You got the Yanmar code like 6LYA etc.

Skip, my engine is no longer in production.  What happened with two popular models from yanmar is that they did not meet the Euro4 requirements and while upgrading them they gave them more horse power.  Im talking about the 300hp which is now 315hp and the 350hp which is now 380.  Mechanically almost everything stayed them same.
The difference between the 300hp and 350hp is that the 300 revs 3800 and the 350 revs 3300.  The 300 is 3.3litre and 350 is 5.3 so it has more tourqe.  And while the 300 has a timing belt, the engine like mine has a timing chain.  My engine is also more heavier. 
I have been on the same boat with the two engines installed in them.....the difference in speed is that mine make about 5-6 miles per hour more but the difference is seen when the boats are loaded....while mine plans and reaches the same speed as usual, the ones with 300 stalls....
Anyway, the guys at petecraft told me that now new boat owners are switching from inboards to outboards and they rarely make a boat like mine with inboards nowadays.  As for me im not a great fan of outboards and nothing beats the turbo sound of a diesel engine.....at least this is what I think!

Thanks for the additional info, yes The Gaffer has a similar ish horsepower engine and whilst not a Yanmar I must say the turbo whistle is impressive. I take it the 6LY3 series (380hp) was too much for your boat or too expensive, I just had a quick look at engine prices, not cheap!

I would imagine Petecraft are putting a single 300hp outboard or something like twin 150 - twin 175 outboards on the back of those depending on how much speed etc the customer wants.

Having a twin outboard setup on these boats i dont think its economical.  Always seen these 22ft with outboards from 225hp to 300hp mark.  With the 300hp outboard it makes 50-55mph.  I think the fastest boat is Petecraft's own, powered by a Yanmar 300 but with z-drive, making an impressive 60mph.
Yanmars are not cheap at all but today what engine/outboard is cheap?  I hope at least it will be reliable!  A boat like mine with a Yanmar 230hp or a Steyr like the Gaffer's is just fine....i paid  extra for an exrtra bit of speed.

How come Petecrafts boat makes 50-55mph with a smaller engine? Can't believe you get so many losses because you are running a shaft, is that really the case?

They say with twin outboards they are worthwhile, providing the boat can plane with one outboard only and the other one trimmed up out of the water, otherwise all you have in an emergency is a very large expensive kicker, and then you may as well go for a large single and a small auxilliary (kicker).

The steering and torque advantage you only tend to get on beamy boats where the two engines can be mounted with a reasonable amount of separation space between them.

Keep us in the loop on how she continues to run this season.

Skip, there is no comparison between an outboard and an inboard diesel mounted with a shaft.  First, one is a diesel and one is a petrol and with an inboard diesel, a lot of power is lost via the shaft!  I could have easily got my speed with a 250hp outboard.  With the inboard engine you have a fixed speed of 45-48mph ( and because the engine is this size), but with an outboard when this boat is on plan, you start trimming the outboard and it picks up more speed.
This boat is quite a heavy boat and with a small outbard its no fun to drive.  I know the Petecrafts have one powered with a suzuki 300hp which makes 50-52mph..... and another one with a verado 275 which makes 47mph.

Actually The Gaffer (26.1feet) is powered by a Steyr Hi-Power 246HP marine turbo diesel engine.  Her Gear is a ZF-450 2:1 ratio.  Engine top revs are @ 4200rpm.  Normal cruising speed @ 3450rmp is around 20knts (best fuel burn to speed ratio and torque) and at the high end she can cruise at 22knts doing 3700rpm.  Top speed is 25 knts when bottom is clean.

Wow .....4200rpm....dat's impressive i think for an engine that size!  No wonder why they call steyr engines, INNOVATION WITH LIGHTNESS.

Actually while shopping around for a new engine for the boat I had short listed 3 makes; Yanmar 250HP, Iveco 230HP and Steyr 246HP.  I opted for Steyr (my engine was the 2nd one on the island, the 1st one being the present agent's) because it was somewhat lighter in weight and about 2 inches shorter in height!.

Thanks my friend!  After having two boats from Petecraft, i would recommend their boats to anyone who wants to use his boat for weekdays of fishing and weekends of pleasure   ;D

It all depends on the engine setup and any extras you install in the boat....for a price it's better give petecraft a call   ;)
