Title: MFF/puttinu cares Magazine
Post by: shanook on February 20, 2011, 12:06:55 CET
As it has been posted, for the coming event that is Mff Alungi comp in aid of Puttinu Cares, the organisers are putting up a magazine with paid adverts by various organisations.
We as MFF members have been given the opportunity to have a personal picture posted in this magazine.
This can be of your beloved boat, a prize catch or a whatever you can come up with as long as it is fish/sea related.
The cost of this is of 10 Euro. This is as a contribution to Puttinu Cares fund.
There is a limited number of photos that can be included because of space. So please its going to be a first come first served situation. if you want to post here to confirm your interest or else pm me.

You can email me the pic on Shanook1@gmail.com

Thanks in the name of the Puttinu Cares and MFF

Prosit Shanook, very good idea. This is what we need to keep our noble crusade going forward, a very good way of generating funds in aid of the Puttino Cares activity. I have sent you a pm booking 2 slots.

This is a great way to promote the forum on the magazine.  We have dedicated a full page to photo's of your catch, boat, anything you feel you'd like to share.  The space is very limited, we only can accomodate 21 pictures, including a short caption to accompany the pic.  A token donation of 10 euros will go towards the Puttinu Cares fund.  Please contact Shanook.

ur call mate
I am presuming u are still here not there......
Title: Re: MFF/puttinu cares Magazine
Post by: SEAFOX on February 25, 2011, 18:40:18 CET
Yes still here Tks Shanook but "missing all the action" though seriously concerned about my buddies holed up in Libya. Ok then Lampuka one and the boat one..will send you some wording. How many words? Best not to show the Tuna one cos I will get some flak, but in all honesty caught this one x 128lbs off  Mexico, one and no more, too tiring!
Title: Re: MFF/puttinu cares Magazine
Post by: shanook on February 25, 2011, 18:45:43 CET
true i didnt select that since its for a magazine where kids will see it...there is some blood which might be traumatic for them.. I remember my kids calling me all names because they saw a video of me killing the alungi......so i learned a lesson there...dont show gruesome pics on kids mags.

thats a nice tuna and i know how strong it can be ...........

Good to know u are here its kinda safer although i think the media is exploding it a bit but i cannot tell as I am not there.

Title: Re: MFF/puttinu cares Magazine
Post by: The_Gaffer on February 28, 2011, 09:12:13 CET
Guys, just to inform you to keep wording to a bare minimum, say max 10 words, they will be reproduced in very small print.  Remember, to get 21 photos onto an A4 size paper, the photos will be 30mmx50mm.  We are effectively 'losing money' on this initiative, as the whole page will bring in €210 as oppsed to a full page advert costing €420.  However, it has been decided to provide some return value to our members featuring in the commemorative magazine in the form of a photo or photos.

Title: Re: MFF/puttinu cares Magazine

if u feel like it why not..... but do u need the receipt book for other things as this might be a lenghty business.... even to send a picture for the magazine seems to be taking some time....

Shanook - Tks for having the pics sent to Creative Partners. As explained this morning I have been receiving several adverts, pics and write-ups from various sources, as a result my inbox packed up! Unless you specifically requested an acknowledgement of your communication from Trudy she would not get back to you cos she has tons of work on her lap.

I have just been contacted by Creative Partners and some pics are low resolution. I hope that they can make use of the ones you sent me but if not please those who sent in low resolution, try to have some pics in reserve just in case.

Shanook - We shall be meeting Creative Partners Tuesday afternoon and will look into the problem. We are not that familiar with high resolution pics.... and all that goes into this business, therefore lets see what the solution is.
Your support in organising a "photo page" in the commemorative magazine is highly apprecited.

We are going to need to set up a location(s) where Premium and VIP members can come and pick up a copy of the magazine. It hasn't been decided yet who will be doing this but I will certainly try and get a couple of boxes to allow people to come and get from Mosta/Naxxar in the evenings.

hi I think the magazine is out (as I have not seen it yet) and unfortunately I have been told that some pictures have been left out. I just sent pm to Gaffer and Robby to check this out. I know that some pictures were in low resolution but the girl taking care of printing was told to include them as they were...............
I apologize if someone has not been included and I assure you that it was not MFF fault but a mistake by the printers.

Thanks Offken....Guys/members - Really I have been on the road distributing the mags to our sponsors since Saturday. It is very time consuming process and we felt that our first obligations were to those who sponsored the mags by advertising. One has to bear in mind that we are 4 weeks late in printing.

I only collected the first 1500 journals last Friday pm, took them to my garage, unloaded all the boxes and started the runs. Tomorrow I have to collect the next 1500 pcs. I do apologize to guys like Shanook et all....but I just can't go to that side of the Island too.
I should have put my boat down to sea tomorrow but cos of this project I am delayed by several days.

Skip/Nick also has been distributing in the Gzira area to all the advertisers; Robby & Gaffer too took a few boxes to Mr. Fish. Gogo is also doing his deliveries. Is there anybody who can come over to my place (or at least meet half way say tomorrow afternoon) take a couple of boxes and distribute to the MFF members in the "northern part" of the Island? Please help out!

Most of you guys here have there boat in the sea, while mine is still on the hard, and a couple of weeks to go yet before its ready for the sea.  In between a very demanding job, I have done my best to get the magazine finished.  Writing articles, rewriting articles submitted by sponsors, designing page layout, ensuring that each artcle was complimented by adverts which made sense and provided continuity, designing the front page, and chasing creative partners to get this project landed and parked. Then proof reading the articles till 3.00am in the morning, getting in touch with the designers, chasing adverts, negotiating payments, chasing people to submit articles, and 1001 other things.  I purposly ommitted to mention my family further up, because I have had no family life for the past 2 months!!  I guess Colin has been my family, my friend, mentor, punching bag (yes guys, it wasn't easly getting this magazine finished).  As I told shanook in a PM, I was not aware of any photos being left out.  I was aware that some people had submitted photos which were of too low a resolution to be adequate for a magazine, and had to be left out.  For those of you who like me, have no idea of how a magazine is produced and printed, I can only tell you that images need to be at least 1Mbyte in size, and that is the bare minimum.  I must also publicly thank Kevin (Malvizzu) who often came to the rescue when we had low resolution adverts and pics and redid all the work himself at no EXTRA EXPENCE!!!

Title: Re: MFF/puttinu cares Magazine

Anybody who wants a magazine can either contact Skip (who incidently has already posted here that he has magazines to hand out to anybody wishing to have a copy), Robby017 and Seafox.  However, I wouldn't expect them to run around the island delivering magazines to ech member.  there are also copies available from all Mrfish outlets, Pirotta fishing centre, RLR, Medcomms, Bouna Pesca Trading, and many others.

@ Shanook, thank you on behalf of all the committee for your very kind words. Anybody willing to meet up with me and take a few boxes to distribute to our members??  Well Gaffer, you could not have put it better..after this long journey taking over 3 months to get the mag completed, if I am asked to have a go at another one I would say a big "NO", anyway I would not know where to start again....its really been a nightmare for you, rightly so as your wife told me.... "all your thoughts & time were focused on this magazine".  I had your pulse rate on an hourly basis and wont say what the results were..Mr. Dunhill came out best from this event! Insomma its over, pleased to see the very good response from those who viewed the mag. Issa the big day on the 26th June. Luckily Gogo does not smoke cos he has 90 boats on his plate, he may commence shortly I guess.

Mela let me start to reply but first one guy who we omitted to thank and are very grateful to is Robby017 - thought of him yesterday late pm.. Sorry, our apologies for missing you out Rob on yesterday's posts.....but really guys Robby also has been tremendous, he takes care of the accounting side, invoicing our advertisers and delivered magazines on Saturday. Prosit u grazzi.

@Skip, always thought that you are a very good salesman!!...I have 8 x 48pcs boxes left but 31 boxes collected this am which are all plastic film wrapped to deliver to most boats in all the marinas. Let me know where I can meet you tomorrow to give you a couple of boxes. I should be going to Gasan and Farsons to deliver at around 9.00 am. Will call you later. I also met Baghira who kindly came over to Marsa at noon, he took about 20 copies to distribute to Shannok & co plus of course a couple for the "great" Malvizzu.

&&&& ...To all those who have posted such kind comments, a big thank you from the committee, notably from the Gaffer who was the "mastermind" behind this project.

@ Bahbuha – glad you liked the mag, yes it was not easy to accomplish as you well know....hope that you can join me fishing  in the near future....being at sea is more relaxing than standing on the shoreline hooking those small things!!

Our apologies to Moonwalker as well, yes such things do unfortunately happen..
In fact we can state also that we overlooked one advertiser, just noticed this morning that the advert did not appear on the mag, this ommission has been very embarrassing for us, luckily it was only one.....imma,, we all do mistakes so bear with us.

Left out of the group picture were: Kaptan Jr, Iman, Placebo, Moonwalker and Ganni. Sorry guys something went wrong. These things happen when you depend on others.

On another note: the magazine is excellent stuff. I have leafed through it about 10 times and have not started reading anything yet, just looking at the set up and the sponsors......real good stuff. Well done. The effort you two put in is phenomenal, well done Gaffer and Seafox (Joe and Colin).
Title: Re: MFF/puttinu cares Magazine

Shanook - its not about dependency, but about quality.  Allow me to give you an example.  In the article on Deep drop fishing, I personally endorsed the decision to have 2 pics (i believe they were fishfinder's pics) taken out of the article because of their very low resolution.  See, the design works in this way; if the image supplied is low resolution, then when transferred to the magazine, and rendered to the magazine's design resolution, the images become blurred.  sinc we were aiming for a high quality output, we simply could not have these images.  They would certaily do no credit to the fantastic articles submitted by the respective authors.

Agreed.  Antoine made alot of things happen apart from being the main tournament sponsor.... adverts, pre tournament briefing venue, BBQ venue and subsidy on BBQ food, donations, Wine to be distributed during BBQ, and other matters which I'm sure Antoine wishes that they remain between us,  because charity begins at home.  It was for this reason that I referred to Anotine as the 'gatekeeper' in the magazine's editorial.

Today got my magazine from Mr Fish, very professional layout and very nice glossy finish, even the write ups are well presented and very interesting spent the whole afternoon reading it. Big thanks to all those who contributed to a such nice and interesting magazine.

The Deep sea fishing article got some missing characters. We used the proper maltese characters for the Maltese fish names but seems that the magazine software did not recognize them.
@Gaffer - fishfinder is very angry for removing his photo... :)

@Moonwalker, yep that's true it seems to be a comptability problem at the printers. The € sign I had in my article also failed to print!
Title: Re: MFF/puttinu cares Magazine
Post by: malvizzu on June 02, 2011, 22:33:01 CET
@Skip - The problem is not with the printers but with the the designers. Either the designers overlooked the problem when they received articles from the contributors or else the final version they forwarded to the printers was not as it should have been, i.e. embedded fonts. I have worked with Gutenberg Press for years and never had any problems relating to missing characters.

Thanks for the clarification Kevin, to be honest I thought it was a printing issue, but as you point out vis-a-vis embedded fonts makes perfect sense.

An amount left in each department for interested staff.

@Fishfinder - The quality of the images supplied were of a very low resolutiuon.  When we tried to put them into the magazine article, and rendered the resolution, both images faded off and lost focus.  We had to make a call to remove them.  Sorry, but I think I've exhausted this argument with all contributors to supply high resolution images.

however i assure you gaffer that my pic was of high resolution, i guess around 5MP. but really, dw, im not bothered at all, its all about fund raising and helping out and appreciate all the effors and dedication :)
Title: Re: MFF/puttinu cares Magazine
Post by: Moonwalker on June 03, 2011, 21:56:22 CET
Ganni - the paid pics were not left out due to low resolution but because of some error while processing the magazine I guess.

Gaffer - Just to clarify things not to make an argument. - Actually there were 3 pics in the original article that were left out. One was fishfinder (although the picture was 1Mb in size it was a little out of focus), the other was a rig (this had a low resolution yes) and the other was my dad with a big bazuga (this was 1Mb too only a little dark).
My only point is that I was not asked to supply other pics but since the article was not submitted early enough then you have your point too.

However I got some comments that we did not include a photo of bazug that is the real target of deep sea fishing.

Joe, Colin, and Antoine in conjunction with Creative Partners spent god only knows how many hours trying to get this magazine done and they did a job that would normally have been assigned to an entire team of editors, designers etc, and the end result was second to none. Everyone that I showed the magazine to assumes it's a foreign publication and are very surprised to learn this was done locally. Unfortunately there were a few Snafu's but they were few and far between.

Perhaps in future years with the creation of the new association that will be formed after the Tournament we will have such a large team in place. May I gently and politely remind everyone reading this that when help was asked for with this Tournament, from our 1,800+ members only a handful stepped forward and this is something that needs to change if people want to see more of these events and things like a magazine. We had a very good response with regards to articles for the magazine, but a very poor result for the actual logistics help needed for both the tournament and the magazine.

After last year's tournament we had requests during weigh-in to do another competition that year!!! everyone loves the end result, but only a few are willing to muck in to get it all organized, the same problems that I know that other clubs have faced whenever they try to put together an event.

Something that can be easily solved....All stewards, judges and anyone who works to get the event going will be paid........since the members do not contribute by doing they will do so by paying and I am sure that this is not a problem for a lot of MFF members not because they are rich or something just because they dont have the time.... those who work overtime, or have to take care of family.........there are thousands of VALID reasons. my 2 dollars (inflation on the 2C )

Hi Tony, I don't really think that's the point of forming a association if people want to be paid to help. Instead one simply won't bother to organise such events until the required help is there! In the case of this year's event, the 'payment' is giving up your free time and incurring costs in order to give all funds collected to Puttinu.

Can you imagine if we say €35 to enter plus another €5 to pay those working an event?

I speak for myself here, but whatever I say can also be applied to Colin.

When last January I posted my intentions here, I never expected that I would end up practically alone on this venture. I must admit, it wouldn't feel the same if I had to be paid for all this. Then it becomes a service and you simply cannot be paid for a charitable cause.
We still need to distribute About 1500 magazines to the major marinas. These magazines have been lying in Colin's garage since last Monday. I was away on business all week, and Colin was working on the boat. As things stand, Colin and myself will again distribute the magazines at the marinas. But not before I get my boat launched.

Yes Gaffer after all the efforts you feel sore when you find that only a handful of persons are prepared to sacrifice few hours for a good cause. This unfortunately is the normal trend. I have been in these activities since the early nineties. Some people turn up for barbecues or Christmas parties probably attracted by food at cheap price and free gifts while others are there simply to grumble.
Turning to this event, since I have been present from the start, I can say that the fund raising i.e running after sponsors and creating the superb magazine was all done by (I may have missed somebody that had a part as well) Joe (gaffer), Nick, Colin and Antoine.
On the other hand, what about the Tournament? Somebody had to prepare the ground for the event to materialize. All necessary permits from Fisheries, Police Departments and Local Council had to be achieved. Vetting and registering all prospective applications involving numerous emails and mobile calls in order to get the required Data. Preparation of logistics for vetting  and trailer areas was of paramount importance.  Why am I saying this?  MFF as it is today can be adequately run by the present Officials mentioned before, however if in the near future a Club with all its needs is to be launched more dedicated persons have to join hand in hand with these four magnificent, hard working motivated leaders.
Still this event is a nice experience and I am sure it will be a success from all aspects, maybe with a query on catches.
Come on a last effort and the goal will be reached.

Gaffer well said and I cant agree more - just to clarify matters.
We did distrubute to nearly, if not all, the mags to the fishing tackle and marine outlets, plus all those who sponsored us or had posters displayed in thier shops. I spent a whole day & half last week distributing mags to Gasan, Farsons, Petecraft, Buccaneer etc including submitting invoices for payment..plus meeting individuals handing over a copy of the mag. etc..

But then as you stated I had to do some more work on my boat and had other family matters to attend to. Hopefully this coming week I shall start plying the pontoons at Vittoriosa/Birgu/Senglea dropping a mag on each boat. Good piece of excercise!

Gogo, we're not magnificent, we just keep our word.  We made a comittment, and we kept to it!

Dear All,

I think its important that you all are informed of the following:

When we embarked on this journey way back in January, we had decided to clasify sponors into  three tiers according to the level and degree of sponsorship and donations.  All the companies that sponsored this event at an offical partner and Corporate sponsor status were offered free advertising space on the commemorative magazine.  HI Tec Marine was recognised as a corporate sponsor, having offered the Selva 2mtr dingy worth €585 retail price and a cash donation to puttinu cares of €250. Thus Hi Tec was offered a free half page advert on the magazine.  Unfortunately, the advert for some reason or another, was left out, and was not even picked up during the proof reading.  This was a very unfortuante situation for which I take full responsibility, as I was coordinating efforts, ensuring the layout of the magazine flowed with the content, and also vetting all adverts to see that all was included. I personally offered the committee to make a donation of €250 to compensate for the lost revenue from Hi Tec, but the committee refused this on the grounds that it was a genuine mistake.

I personally visited the Hi Tec showroom on Friday, to appologise and try and make ammends.  Obviously, Hi Tec were very disappointed, but accepted the ommision as a genuine mistake from my part. I tried to make the best of a situation that had gone bad my refusing to take the dingy, and in return for a donation of just €400, we would offer Hi Tec exclusive advertising space on the boat identification numbers, which will cost us €230, plus exclusive use of the jetty on the day of the tournament to market the Selva outboard range.  I am reproducing herein the official email from Hi Tec I recieved today in response to my offer:

Dear Joe,

Whilst I would like to start by thanking you for coming over to explain the mishap.. and your will to
Compromise for the mistake.. I truly understood you and I very much appreciate this..

We are very disappointed that Hi-Tec Marine did not show in the brochure.. and like I said we strive to be one of the
Main suppliers on the island and not showing in the magazine to me is big letdown..

My biggest concern is customers will think we did not contribute to such a publication..
Even thought we are mentioned in the small print and our logo on the website I do not think everyone will notice..
(I think you will agree with me here)

We have discussed between us and unfortunately we are not interested in any other resort other that the brochure
That we had already planned for.. but once again I thank you for your efforts to compromise.

However I would like you to post a comment on the forum to explain that we did contribute to the brochure and unfortunately
There was a mistake somewhere along the line.. at least the members will know... I don't think this is to much to ask for..

I assure you that I understand that mistakes can happen and unfortunately it was my advert..

Let's hope this doesn't happen again in the future..

On a positive note our goodwill still remains.. no silly heart feeling between Danny or joe or Hi-Tec Marine and the forum..
And you can still count on us to supporting the forum..

Thanks & regards
Daniel.

Joe, thanks for the update. Please could you forward me the Hi-Tec advert that was due to be displayed in the magazine. Let's have a look where we can upload this on the forum/website.

@Skip - I was thinking on the same lines. Maybe for a determined period, the forum can make Hi-Tec's advert a splash-on screen like the one of the Big Game Tournament when one logs on to the forum. Another idea is to use the advert and send a mail shot to every member's email on the forum. These two suggestions would not entail any expenses. Another alternative is to have Hi-Tec's advert printed on it's own and inserted in the remaining magazines and maybe distribute them as well to those outlets were magazine was delivered.
