I was thinking of trying to use some jig heads with grubs from land. What do you mates think about it! Has anyone ever tried this method cause I never saw anyone here in Malta fishing with this method from land.I tried it on boats for kahli and cervjol especially and it is really a good method.

I think if you use a light rod and go to the right places..not too deep but neither shallow it could be good, on cervjol, kahli, sawrell and who know. try it out ;)

spitec some years ago i used to fish like that for small sawrell at ras hanzir.

use a soft tipped rod to cast far out as much as possible and make sure your reel is fully loaded with thin line (0.20mm) to enable longer casts.

with that jig heads you might achieve a cast of around 30mtrs which should be good enough, but the thing is that in many places the kahlija doesn't strike close to land. But it is good that you give it a try. On grubs you never know - those are very good and many predatory fish strike on them!

Freeman, here is a picture to see what grub jigs are like.

There are many ways to work your bait, you can and will create your own ways to work your bait as you fish the spot more. Here is a tip of fishing the bait, this will work almost all the time. Cast straight out as far as you can I would use tackle as placebo mentioned , let the bait fall all the way to the bottom, giggle the rod as the bait falls to the bottom. When the bait is on the bottom reel your line slack up with your rod at 9 o'clock, now lift up on your rod to 12 o'clock stop at the top for 1 to 2 seconds to let the bait fall back to the bottom. Reel up the slack with your rod at 9 o'clock, repeat this until you need to cast out again. You usually get strikes while the bait is falling. I have not used this technique in Malta but used it in the UK & it worked wonders.

This is a good type of knot to tie the jig to your line unless anyone else has a better type , It is called a clintch knot.

Dear Guys,

Has any one ever tried live grubs?

They are commonly found in winter in the fields.  At least ours is full.

Thanks

Adrian

Great explanation tatanka and as placebo said you need a very light rod and thin line.I imagine it will work but will try it out for sure. The only problem I think I will have is that the jig heads are very light since they will increase in weight when you use big hooks and the once I want to use are small size 4 or 5.Will try it out and keep you up dated.

Spitec , I guess you have checked this out allready as I know you do have quite alot of good tackle that you buy & sell. I guess there will be some modification what is the weight on the small jigs size 4 & 5. Possiby melt the led on the jig & melt some more led with a solder iron 'saldatur in maltese'(Thanks to Placebo I know what it is in English now) Just to get more weight in the jig. I will try it when I get home in a couple of weeks.

There are special hooks which I will order when I will import more tackle that are especially designed for that but the jig heads I have(I brought them with me  from Canada) are not that heavy but will try them.

Hi tatanka, used to use the tecnique you described when i worked for the lighthouse authority (trinity house) and caught loads of pollock when we were on the offshore islands.Infact i used to have a bet with the others that when i was on south bishop lighthouse that i would catch a pollock with my first cast, i never lost  ;D
