Good points Ganni. I have quite the collection of reels, way too many lures (I blame Seafox for the inspiration as he has a mini shop!!) but when it comes to rods I don't have anything special. But I think what I do have are more than adequate.

Any favourites ? What action do you like on your rod for the Tuna family and Sailfish? All rollers, guides and roller tip, or first and last rollers and the rest ring guides ?

Here are some of my tips I would like to share...

Lures.
If you have a particular lure that seems the most productive, stock up on them while you can. I have seen very productive lures go out of production or totally redesigned resulting in inferior quality and effectiveness. Williamson swallowtails and yo- zuri hydro squid [the original not the transparent plastic version]
are just an example.

Rod and reels.
Buy the best you can afford and always do your research before buying. You will save money in the long term.

Engine
Get to know your boat engine especially if you do not do any work on your engine yourself. Simple knowledge of the basics to get your motor up and running is critical when you get stuck out there.

One important aspect which is overlooked by many anglers is sea conditions.  I am referring here to sea currents, wave direction, sea temperature, dark days or bright days.  Take note of which way the current is flowing, as this usually determines whether its going to be a slow day or a good day for fishing
