Propellor

Hi ppl. I'm just taking my boat apart and realised that two fins of my propellor are slightly bent at the tips. Does anyone know where I could get it fixed and balanced?

It kinda boils down to materials and how well you want the prop fixed and balanced. If its for a small boat, outboards tend to have aluminium props which are cheaper and also easier to repair. In our case we swing a 20 inch 3 bladed stainless steel prop and I can tell you no one here is properly certified nor has the correct equipment to do a repair and true balance, not even the dockyard. We used an expert company in the UK www.steeldevelopments.co.uk to get our done and I was very happy with the service.

If yours is a smaller outboard prop I would suggest you buy a new one and try getting your other repaired locally if you wish to keep it as a spare. However I feel a locally repaired prop will not perform as well and will consume more fuel, hence you're better off keeping it as a spare.

Hi guys. Thanks for the input. I'm based in B'Kara but anywhere would do as long as it's for the boat! The propellor is a 14 x 17 (on ebay a similar one is close to Lm100) and to be honest someone else already gave me Skip's advice..

There's a guy on the north side of Republic Street in Valletta at 71,St Nicholas Street.....all he does is props and shafts and he's been there for years.  Name is Bezzina Marine Engineering.   Tel 21220220.

In my case it wasn't worth trying to fix my prop for a small outboard. Spent Lm16, wasted time, and finished up buying a new one eventually for Lm50.

Thnks for your help guys. I've decided to have mine repaired and keep it as a spare even though it looks like new. The problem is I cannot tell if it's good or not now! I took it to caruana engineering in Marsa/Paola.

Very simple! Stick it on the outboard and run it, see if you get vibration which will tell you if its out of balance. And second test the performance of the boat as well.
