I have just received the following reply from a person at MRAE (Ministry For The Environment) to the comment which I left on their website:

"Thank you so much for alerting us to this. I am liaising with the
relevant authorities on remedial/enforcement action. I will revert back
soonest."

In the meantime I still think that it will help if every one of us who witnessed or witnesses this pollution (as for all we know the barge might still be going on with its irresponsible operation) and / or took some photos of the pollution being left, submits his report to MRAE / MMA / Valletta Port Control.

Thanks guys and let's all work on keeping our sea something to be proud of!

Dear All,

With such a fast and positive response from the MRAE, I think it would be best if we hold on alerting the times. After some reflection and direct experience they do have a habit of getting facts wrong and also dramatizing the situation. We also dont want any negative feelings towards the forum, so we should definately continue the matter to the MRAE.

It has also been suggested to me that the MRAE can handle the issue about illegal net fishing in conjunction with MEPA and the Fisheries Dept, so if we establish a good rapport with the MRAE this could serve us well for the future should we need to bring things to their attention.

Jonathan, could you drop me an email and let me know roughly what was written on the MRAE website and also indicate the person you were dealing with. I think it will help the MRAE if we submit a letter from the forum indicating that several members witnessed the act and provide them with the photo Jonathan has plus any others we might get so that they can reinforce their case. I'm sure the person concerned performing the dumping will attempt to deny his involvement, and so the more ammunition provided to the dept in question, the better.

We can clarify with them as to whether a letter to MMA/Port control would be useful.

Yes, well done Jonathan, it seems that our complaint has not fallen upon deaf ears and that the authorities shall be investigating the matter. I'd be more than happy to write to MRAE as an individual or collectively as member of MFF explaining what I had seen on Sunday.

In the meantime, we should also take the matter of illegal net fishing in harbour areas up with the relevant authorities. We need to establish the most effective way in which MFF members could report any incidences.

Yes Skip I fully agree with your last post regarding building a working relationship between us and other bodies such as MRAE. Our aim is that of protecting our sea from the shameful and illegal activities of some reckless individuals. We can help the authorities by immediately informing them about any similar incidents which we observe. Then I agree with you that we should follow the issue up cautiously in the best possible way which is likely to help our cause.
