Is it possible to apply an anti-osmosis treatment (gelshield) after antifouling or do you need to remove all the antifouling?
When I bought the boat they told me that the gelcoat has some sort of treatment and I didn't need to do it but now on second thoughts I'm thinking of rather being safe than sorry!

Not only do you have to remove any anti fouling previously applied to the hull, but if you intend to apply a water barrier to a hull that has been previously treated, then it is recommended that you also remove the previous coat/s of water barrier.  There are products which will help you remove both the antifouling and the previous coating/s of water barrier.

Benri I think at this stage you are probably too late and it will be a big hassle and expense. Did you clarify with Hi-Tec what the warranty was on the hull against osmosis?

sirena

clearly right , i've done that treatement on my boat i had to remove anti fouling then i slightly sanded the gelcoat afterwards i applied the treatement , consisting of epoxy the primer then the antifouling  thus cost me many many money and time

Skip I haven't clarified.... in fact it totally went out of my mind and I'm only remembering after I saw The_Gaffer's post in another thread. What type of expense do you mean... to get the antifouling off or to apply the gelshield?

To get off the anitfouling you will use a " paint remover ". Then when you don't have piants suc as antifouling, primer, you have to sand the gelcoat with a  raff sand paper, that the gelcoat cames "matt". Then you have to aplicat the epoxy for 2/3 times coats. I had already do that job on our perla. Important to sanded good its not easy m8

mine had 3 coats of water treatment and 2 coats of primer and 3 coats of antifouling total cost (did it all myself mind u about 8 years back approx Lm300. Probability that costs have gone up not down. Also u have to dedicate 5 consecutive days as the manufacturer stats that u only wait 24 hrs max between coats, otherwise adhesion wont be to the max.
Benri check with HI Tech and follow their advice.

yep that sure shanook about time between coat and another... Epoxy that we use is (if im not going wrong) 32.15 e. It's will be a Lm15. If you like more specific info benri, go @ Camilleri Marine Centre ( gzira in front of the garden ). The staff is really nice and helpful..
