i caught some in the 1/2 kilo range

1/2 kilo range at this time of yr is very good ...... the biggest one i ever caught was a bit over 1 kilo. I couldnt move the reel :-). This year I would like to experiment more on different lures and colours. I usually stick to Yamasitha (shrimp colours) ones but ...... there are many different ones around, so trying something else could result into a surprise.

Usually i'de love to go with strong 20mm in coffee like visibility and switch to around 18mm in crystal clear waters. Somewhere in between should work great as an all rounder.

Do the squiddys fight for their freedom or are they just dead weight when u catch them ?

Gazzetta

You get some resistance from big ones but nothing special hehe

It's like if you just have a caught a plastic bag. When brought to surface there is an occasional splash.

1- About the line from land it's not that important for the squid you should use a good line from 0.20 to 0.30.The line is important when you come for the cast. The thicker the line the shorter the cast. And that's important.
2-About the fight yes they do give a fight if you are well equiped because you have to use a very soft tip rod to feel every movement of the lure because if you are really into squid fishing you can say that sometimes the squid starts touching the lure with the 2 long tentacles and that's a crucial time. And when you are witha soft tip rod they do give a fight trying to go backwords not like a fish from side to side or from bottom to surface.

You see even guys that spin for them with rods that are ment for bottom fishing.Sorry for long reply but I love squid fishing.
FISHING IS THE BEST HOBBY AND IT'S GREAT FOR RELAXING

as for boat fishing i fish really cool. it's a 90mm handline with simple pater noster (size 35 - 40mm line) of 3 squid jigs (i go for very cheap stuff) and a good sized lead weight (depends on current). Even for pater noster terminal i'm not into fluorocarbon and other gimmicks. I prefer a good line that does not tangle and leave you fishing for long hours in heavy currents.
I'm not that much into grammage beacause i have learnt to judge weight only by vision! but i assume it's always that 100gm - 200gm.

poor catch

Could somebody please explain effects of currents for kalamari fishing by boat, apart from the driftng aspect that is.

Which are the most productive current flow directions ? Say normally best from a NW'ly  or N 'l y direction etc. ?

Does sea swell have any bearing on numbers caught compared to similar conditions but without any swell ?

do not get into so much detail my friend as fishing is not so simple to decide which currents are the best.

In south i find it's good with NW breezes and the lowest deep current the best.
The breeze is important to enable a good drift of the boat.

About sea swell i really do not know. Normally when it is a big swell i do not go out since the sea bed is not clear and you get very poor catches.

Can't wait to go fishing
