YESTERDAY ME AND CLAYTON WENT TROLLING IN THE GRAND HARBOUR AREA. WE STARTED AT AROUND 18.00 HRS. AT AROUND 18.35 WE HAD OUR FIRST STRIKE AND WE CAUGHT A BARRACUDA. AROUND 15 MINS LATER WE HAD ANOTHER STRIKE OF ANOTHER BARRACUDA BUT IT GOT AWAY NEAR THE BOAT. AT AROUND 19.00 HRS WE HAD ANOTHER STRIKE IT WAS A NICE BONITO (PLAMTU) THIS TIME OF AROUND 3 KG (VIDEO TO FOLLOW SOON) AFTER 10 MINS BATTLE WE MANAGED TO GET IT ON THE BOAT. WE WERE USING THE PREDAPRO WITH LACCI AS BAIT. TROLLING SPEED 3 - 4 KNOTS.                                                                                                                                                                                FROM 19.00 HRS TILL 20.30 HRS WE MANAGED TO GET ANOTHER 5 STRIKES BUT DIDN'T MANAGE TO GET THEM ON THE BOAT. ONE OF THE STRIKES WAS ANOTHER BONITO (PLAMTU) BECAUSE IT ESCAPED NEAR THE BOAT.

Excellent guys well done and good to hear about the Predapro in action. I wonder what the reason was for the 5 strokes you didn't manage to land? Did you feel the fish was coming off the hook.....were you using hand lines or light rods?

We were using lacci bigger than 15 cm some were even 18 cm long. More than the maximum lenght that the predapro rig can take. The lacci swam well at 4 knots even though they were much bigger.

The problem is that we were using circle hook and not treble hooks.

Today we went again trolling late in the morning in the grand harbour and we managed to get 5 strikes from 12.00 to 12.30 in the afternoon. We used the predapro rig with lacci. We didn't manage to get them on the boat. They were surely barracuda because from how the lacci were mutilated. Today we used on one predapro rig a treble hook but the barracuda managed to cut 0.60mm line and got away.

Hi guys, see you were using lacci (sardines?) as bait.Do you by them or catch them yourselves? If you catch them, how do you do it? Thanks.  Wink

Circle hooks are not meant to be used for trolling, probabbly that is the reason for all those strikes without any result!!

Is barracuda normally caught at that time of the day? I never trolled for them myself but from what I've read here they always seem to strike very early in the morning or very late in the evening

The sardines are bought from Marsaxlokk.

To be honest I am quite new to trolling so I don't know if barracuda are normally caught during the day.

If you go back to past posts on the subject, you find a lot of info on the way to catch barracuda (Lizz).
The most popular times to catch them is just before dawn, and around dusk. These times artificial lures can be used. With live or dead bait you can get hits even during the light hours of the day.

Tnx ramio

No time for fishing as for now but it is good to know that they can be caught at other times of the day. From what I read here it seems that dawn is the best time, but (as might be guessed from my username) trying to wake up at 3 am, even if it is to go fishing runs against my DNA.
