There are about five different species of barracuda in the Mediterranean two of which have migrated from the red sea. From information that I have gather, only two or three species of cudas are caught. These include the:
- Mediterranean barracuda (Sphyraena viridensis) which is the most common and abundant species that we catch.
- Blluntjaw Barracuda (Sphyraena obtusata)
- Yellow stripe barracuda (Sphyraena chrysotaenia)
[/list]
Studies from the Mediterranean have shown that the two two immigrants from the Red Sea are expanding their range westwards and therefore it is interesting in finding out exactly what occurs in Maltese waters (i.e have these species of barracudas arrived yet in Malta.)
Any information from your catches, sightings (for the speros
) and from other sources regarding the capture of these barracuda species or any other new or strange barracudas is much appreciated. Kindly post such information in this thread or else send me a pm.Thanks in advance guys for the help!
