Anyone has experience fishing for spnott using float and bait (rather than spinning)?

Yes with running float and bread as bait!

Tancred when I go for spnott, I always fish at the bottom. Never tried float. Although the spnott likes to hunt in mid water.

in the old days some used cheese as bait for spnott just as it is used nowadays for sargi.

Try float fishing but using a live sand eel as bait ( dont know what the maltese is for sandeels) But in the UK this method works superb for Bass (Spnott) If you have any use braided line on your reel you can then feel every little movement of the sand eel and when the bass takes it, its like the bait has been hit with an express train

noz, in malta we do not have sandeels, I think it is more of an atlantic species.  If you're fishing for spnott, the best live bait you can use is shrimp.  Catch them the night before, but only catch what you think you'll use.  Please DO NOT waste our natural resources. A couple dozen live shrimps are more than enough.

Keep a jerrycan of fresh sea water, and keep the shrimps alive by using an areator and changing some water every few hours, keep them in a dark cool place.  If you look around on the internet you will find plenty of information on how to bait them on a hook without killing it, but basically use fine hooks and very thin line to allow the shrimp to swim naturally.
