I heard about this new type of bait that may be stored for a long time.It is called Greedy Bait selling from a shop in Naxxar( probably Fishing World). Probably it was already mentioned in this forum but I am not sure.Has anyone tried it and if yes how does it compare to other types of bait like the local hniex and the imported boxed ones? I appreciate if anyone used it and can give some feedback. I am planning to try it out and will post the results but at the moment I am very busy and do not have time.

Hi Gabaj,

I tried them and to be quite honest i was very pleased,  basically we went out and took 2 packets of greedy bait and 1 'Hniex ta L-imperjal',  i was using the greedy bait and my friend was using ta limperjal,to be quite honest we did not notice anything wrong with them,  the only thing is that the maltese hniex is stronger....apart from that i would recommend them!!!   better the the korea ones for sure!!!

Thanks for the info, as I said I intend to try them out since I see two main advantages which are the price and long life. If I understand correctly one can store these worms for a considerable amount of time if the package is unopened. This is a major advantage on live worms subject that the performance is not very different ( I expect live bait to perform better but these worms can be an alternative in some situations)

Thanks again and I will post results when I find time to use them.

I managed to try the bait for a couple of hours yesterday evening and here is my first impression. First of all I was fishing near St Thomas Bay in a relative inland and shallow place ( since I was actually at a BBQ and a friend at work gave me some of the bait to try out ) I started fishing at about 7.30pm when there was still a bit of light. I had a few strong bites but no catch, still it was encouraging. The bites got fewer and more far between with the onset of darkness and then I had no bites for 2 hours after dark. With regards to the strength of the worms , I found them quite 'fragile' and much less strong than the hniex ta l-imperjal and the Korean worms.

This is my first impression which is not of a seasoned angler so I stand to be corrected ,maybe even by myself as I intend to try out the bait again.

As per my earlier post ,I used this bait again and had  different results. I used the bait while bottom fishing for 'rusett ??' from a boat close to the shore and still I had better results with shrimps, however yesterday while having a bbq at St Thomas Bay I used the bait again. This time it was encouraging as I was having regular bites and managed to reel in a nice sargu of 500gr.

I also need to confirm some info re preserving 'hniex ta l-inmperjal'. A friend of mine told me that unused hniex can be preserved in salt and frozen, subject that it is salted while still alive otherwise is rots and gives of a very foul odour. Can anyone confirm this before I try it out because if it still give off bad odours my wife would kick me out a I would have to live on my borrowed 13 ft boat.( I know that this might have some advantages but 13ft is a little to tight ...)

it is very true that the salt will presrve it But and a very big BUT it needs to be rock salt not the normal table salt. Also it will become stronger the more you freeze it and defrost it. i also do the same with my peeled shrimps as my mother in law would kill me if there was a smell in the freezer

So rock salt on peeled shrimps keeps them from smelling foul? My mum will surely thank you ppl...when I used to go fishing more often, she was always complaining about the smell and she used to wrap them in about 5 or 6 plastic bags...but to no avail...beef still tasted a bit 'fishy'  ;)

Another thing - a friend of mine told me that he met a woman who was fishing for kahli using shrimps which she covered in SUGAR  :o  According to him she was very successful. Has anyone ever heard this thing or was this woman simply extending her cuilnary habits to fishing?

There are people who say that putting sugar on helps but all it helped me do was getting sticky fingers and lots of ants. With the shrimps I peel them while fresh the cover them in rock salt. The more you take them in and out of the freezer the stronger they will come so its better not being stolen from the hook the second it hits the water. Also covering the shrimps in the salt means that the next time you want to use them you will not need to wait for them to defrost as they never fully freeze.

I agree with Kempy re the salt being better then sugar for shrimps.I used to preserve shrimps in sugar and they do keep well with little smell but salt is better as the shrimps get tough due to the loss of water. This toughness can be increased by putting the shrimps for some time in the sun( not too much) and then cover with salt and put in the freezer. This is especially a good way to prepare the shrimps when fishing with small hooks ( eg- for vopi ) since the shrimp can be easily cut with a sharp blade into very small pieces without crushing  it.

Thanks a lot! It's good to know that they get toughter - I never particularly liked shrimps because they were so delicate. I will surely try it when I will start rod fishing more often! ;D
