You have to pay Import Duty and VAT on the amount it costed (amount paid + shipping and insurance) then VAT on the Total (the Import duty + VAT on amount)

Yes I know about that...i;ve been selling engines for a while now....but didn't know about this law about 2 stroke outboards.  Im just asking because i usually buy second hand from the US.

Skip, may I ask from which website did you get this info??  It says that even 4 stroke outboards have to meet the 2006 standard european emission....so what about 4 stroke outboards that where manufactured from 2001-2005???  Can they be imported as second hand from a non-eu country into malta??

It was on a couple of major websites when I had been looking into it, I don't have the links handy. Outboards already in the EU that are now 2nd hand appear to be exempt, but I don't know about ones that come from the US. I would imagine if stopped, they won't let them in, assuming they are aware of it. 4 strokes outboards by their design nature should automatically meet the emissions standards, so I doubt you would have issues there. Then again when it comes to an engine (and I'm not sure if this applies to 2nd hand), you're supposed to produce a CE certificate or declaration of conformity to EU standards.

Camkev might be able to better guide you on the local procedures once such a package arrives by sea freight.
