Hi Guys,

Do any of your spearos go out in deep bluewater using the blue mimetic suits and try going for things like Bluefin tuna etc? I'm really curious to see whether you guys would manage to spear smaller 6-15kgs Bluefin that we come across in early September around 20 miles offshore.

Last year we stopped the boat and were chumming and they were all around us, even though they weren't biting. I'm convinced that if we had deployed a spearo you would have had a field day.

if you make me an invitation we try to land one. I have some friends that spearfish in the ocean for fish like that. Last year they gave a lot of advvice how to fish them. Infact Im waiting for some other rubber. Maybe we try this on one of them.  In malta I stopped several times but there was  alot of boat traffic around and this use to scare the fish. With big tunas I never meet them but when you want we can try it

lol if emicmalta works wonders and turns me into a good spearfisher by then im game :) however i must say he got his work cut out rofl.

my idea is not of finding tuna aroud but if finding some nice jaws on my back. Dont worry, I show you erhow to do but I ll say on the boat.  Last month we meet a guy after spearing  the 22kg grouper. He is a scuba instructor from africa. He told us if we do catch a fish like that in africa for sure in less then 5mins will not find it. With all that tuna i dont know what there is under. This isn t a small job

I've watched TV programmes on LineaBlu and fishing channels where spearos have a field day with yellow fin and Amberjack.  It would be possible to spear a 10-15kgs BFT, or an amberjack, but one needs to be careful when these fish make a run for it, and one should have adequate bouyancy attached to the spear so as not to get dragged under or loose the spear altogether!!!.  Remember, these fish are very strong swimmers, and they're in their natural habitat, while man is playing away with only a limited amount of air in his lungs!!!

this was just post in an italian forum, The tuna kept turning around the spearfisher and for a little it didn t tie him up. Also lood at the flauts and rubbers needed for this kind of fishing

You're right looks bloody dangerous! Was that a really long spear or rubber at the end of the spear itself?

EmicMalta

it was shoot by a thick spear so that it can penatrates much more. It should be 7mm or 8mm with a special accesory called slip tip. This works like this. When the pear hit the fish this "bracks up" and keeps on a 8-10cm stainlles steel line so the fish does not brake the spear.

the setup for this kind of fishing con be found in here

Very ineresting Ed, so it's a whole specialised set up then. Makes sense I guess though I doubt anyone would invest in that kind of set up here?

EmicMalta

At first I was joking about this topic but beive me its one of the best espirience one can make. Dont worry, SimonG, Robert, and Jonathan told me about this situation and from that day I worked on it. I have all staff and when its time just tell me and we come. For sure I cannot be alone and need guys that with me that can relay on each other.  As you saw there is no mistakes on this job and need to be in 3 in the water.

I don t know if you where with them that day but on that reef there are people who is doing this kind of spearfishing

Ed, we'll have to see if we can convince someone like The Gaffer to take you guys out along with your gear as 3 + gear needs quite a bit of space = a good sized boat with big cockpit like The Gaffer has.

Would be happy to go out together and act as a support boat. Usually in early to mid September we find Bluefin of varying sizes West of Gozo. Smaller ones 2-5 miles out and the larger ones when you're lucky to find them 18-30 miles out.

EmicMalta

at the moment is good for another kind of spear fishing. You know what im talking about. Belive me is we do a good one there in this time of the year we could catch much better fish then only tuna.

Sure I saw The Gaffer boat and it looks really fantastic. The inportant thing is that we will do it in good weather and the results will come. Also there is Dave s one Geisha. Really a good boat. Also we can do it with him

I guess it's an amazing experience ............. I would like to be part of the support team if you guys decide to do it. Jesus Christ ..... it's just pure adrenaline.
If you ain't living on the edge, your taking too much bloody space

hey budagrass, here we are not talking about pure adrenaline or something. Over there we go to catch and be safe as possible. Also we will spend money on fuel, every one will have the day out so if im in it I don t want rash things. We spend a lot of money in equipment and dont want to loose it out there. I wish to be with guys I swim with and know that their performance is at the top.

This thing was going to make it alone with some good friends at a max of 2 boats and 3 spearoes in the water. Its really danger so someone needs to have the contral of this. I will speak with Giovanni as he is much better then me and we talk about it

I was talking about open water fishing with a friend of mine this week.  Apparently there was a group of people who participated in the competition that practice it.  I think it can be practiced in Malta.  Last year I had met a group of huge tuna's while on the dinghy, but only had a 90 gun and no reel, so I didnt even dream of getting in the water.  If you need another person to join, Ill  be more then happy.
