hullhadd qied jibzaw li ma thallashomx man.  LOL. dont worry mate when i go out if and thats a big IF I catch one i keep it for u, or give u a call see if u still want one.  Buddhagrass make sure when u buy one that it does not have a fishy smell. Alungi smell different it more like a blood smell,  also that it was kept cool after capture. better still if it was bled after capture. All these things make a difference in the taste of the cooked fish.
Weather is not good to go out for Alungi mate. hopefully end of week will be better

As Tony said the key to a good tasting Alunga is a combination of all the following:

1). Whilst being reeled in boat is kept moving forward at a reasonable speed.
2). As soon as the fish is on board it's stunned and then a spike inserted at the top of it's head into the brain. This prevents it from struggling and generating histamine which taints the meat
3.) The fish is then drained of blood, I also like to gut them at the same time.
4.) Finally well packed in ice or iced brine.

Same applies to Tuna except one doesn't need to keep the boat moving forward, in fact if it's a decent sized one chances are you will be backing down on it.

some italian friends told me a metter how to put fish in cold. For example, they have 3 water bottles (2trs) and fil the with fresh water and put them in freezer so they freeze. Then once they start fishing they put 12lts of seawater in d cooler and open the plastic bottles so that the sea water melts the fresh water ice and they mix. This look that it works and in italy they have a name for this technic.

Personally we never tried it cos normally if with the dingy we buy ice before and si it will melt too fast. But for sure will try it cos they say that even the fish colour stays the same

emic its a good idea but i have a slight modification to it. See we are on a boat far out at sea and if something happens the most important thing the body needs is water. So I fill in plastic bottles with fresh drinking water i freeze them and when i place them in the ice box with the sea water i leave them closed. they chill the sea water and if there is an emergency i have about 6 bottles filled with cool fresh drinking water. See we Maltese are wiser than the Ities.

Oh by the way this method of placing the alunga in cold water rather than place ice on it is better as it cools the fish all around. even if u pack ice under and on top of alunga u still get air pockets of hotter air. An alunga can stay for 14 hrs in cold water without causing any damage.

I like this idea cause I've always left the alungi in the igloo filled with these plastic bottles. As Shanook said water is very useful out there and once i'm back into the port we use the water to fill in the shower to clean the boat.

water is getting expensive now :o ;D
