Title: Night Fishing at Marsoxlokk
Post by: blueskip on April 25, 2009, 17:18:21 CET
When I come out again in September Redbus9 & I have decided to go night fishing near the stalls that sell fish at Marsaxlokk, he reckons that the guts & bits that get thrown in will attract "monsters", so we will be "fishing big, for big fish" :D
I have a couple of boat rods out there (20lb class & 50lb class) & reels to match, &  12FT Exage beachcaster. Does anybody have any idea what is liable to be "lurking" around there? morays maybe? maybe a short wire trace would be an idea, or very heavy (150lb mono) as a hook length?
We were thinking big smelly baits, a flask of coffee, box of sanwiches, headlight, hip flask ::), when we decide exactly which night(s) we are going we will post it on the forum, then if anybody wants to join us they will be welcome, or just come along for a chat, to see if we have pulled anything in, or been pulled in ourselves :o In the back of my mind I keep thinking that if it was worth fishing there, somebody else would have already done it?
Still it beats going out "for a nice meal, in a nice resturaunt" as "er indoors" describes it, she doesn't understand that I would rather be fishing, than eating out, & making polite conversation ::)

Blueskip, I wouldnt reccomend that place very much. Nothing would wont to live there and anyway only 8feet deep or so.
If  you realy want to try this out and have a chance of something. Do your research find maps, talk to people etcetc Find somewhere nice and deep  and go ahead ;) You'd have a good chance of catching a moray and even if your very lucky maybe a nice fish (grouper, dentex etc)
Try using pieces of fish (mackarel etc) and nice big cuts of squid or even whole small squid.
When i go land fishing (bottom fishing) i always take 2 lines round a piece of cork with a decent size hook, bait it up and i let it drift slowly down (throw some line off into the sea and let the bait slowly go down) I caight many morays this way and once i caught a 3kg Grouper, Another time i saw the line very tense went to pull and felt the head shaking of a fish but it cut the line (mabye dentex :o who knows.)

The thinking behind it is because of all the fish bits etc that get thrown in there, something must eat it, otherwise the place would be stinking the Bay out, 8ft of water would be enough for a Great White to come in & feed at night without being seen :o
I think this is what Redbus9 had in mind when he suggested it, a dark night, 8ft of water, & a spot full of ground bait, & if we dont get a bite what about the sandwiches, coffee, hip flask, & the fishing stories! :D

Always worth a try and you can put the theory behind the fish bits to the test :)

blueskip even a great white knows better than to come close to shore here in Malta, it will definitely be a hazard, to his health that is.......
But I would still try it as who knows u might run into something worthwhile and as u rightly said better to be out with good fishing company than sitting at a restaurant... GOOD LUCK

We have to give it a try blueskip,I won,t be happy untill I get a monster moray there but I don,t think we will get a great white but I would love to be proved wrong.   ;D

There's a simple explanation for not smelling like rotten fish in there mate, the stench is covered by the 2cm of diesel on the surface. Jokes apart, if you really want to fish over there, I think your better off with a bit of running float fishing using live shrimps  or maggots as bait, and try your luck for a nice bass.
Title: Re: Night Fishing at Marsoxlokk

and dont forget to practice catch and release, it is healthier for u than for the fish.

Not more bass! I'll be trying to get away from them after the summer, they are in "plague" proportions over here during summertime, drop a live joey mackerel over the side & its either a bass or a tope that chomps it!
I have only ever caught one moray before & that tried to eat me, so I an looking forward to getting another.
Diesel? no problem, if it gets cold halfway through the night all we have to do is throw a fag end into the water, & warm ourselves by the fire!

The place sounds better and better. No one fishes there, and all that fish guts in the water its got to be monster moray time.I am comming back to Malta on 19 May untill 10 July maybe we could give it a trial for a few hours one evening durring this time, before the allnight session in september if anyone wants to join me?   ;D

It does if you soak a rag in it first, with luck it should burn all through the night without poking! should solve the problem od the diesel on top of the water, in fact a good fire would get rid of the problems that cause it as well, so Placebo get your boat out of the water before Redbus9 & I go night fishing!

Catching bass over here is a bit more complicated here, on the other hand catching morays is much less problematic and actually quite easy. No clue if there are morays at marsaxlokk but if you dont manage over there, go spend a night either at valletta near the break water or at cirkewwa and you should spend the night reeling them in.

I,ve seen an old Maltese guy catching a bagfull of small morays (approx 2 kilos each) opposite St Nazereth Church on Sliema seafront near the ferries. But I want a MONSTER.  :o  :o  :o

If you go during the week end nights you should see a guy who spends all the night there, actually near the pool, a fish for the morays. Once he got a baby shark.

I would suggest to go Birzebbugia by the free port. Where there's the club (forgot exactely what kind of club though, but if not mistaken it's the sail boat club).

Another thing. I don't know fish names in English can somebody please translate Moray, Bass in Maltese.

Thanks Spitec. And by the way BIGBOY don't complain about catching a lot of something as there are some of us (LIKE ME) who practically go home empty handed, as the fish that they (AND ME) catch are too small!!

Well you'd have a nice fish to compensate for the disaster no?

By the way do you have a pic of your boat BigBoy as I go spinning under "is-Sur" of St. Elmo and I think that I've seen you a couple of times passing? (though I never caught ANYTHING from there in regards to sninning)

What are we likely to catch by the Yacht Club? we think that the fish guts thrown in at Marsoxlokk will attract fish in at night to feed.
What do they throw in from the Yacht Club that is likely to attract fish? people who dont have yellow "wellies" maybe? lol

The weight of the rig (trace) is very light, the heaviest part of the trace will be the bait, the weight to take the bait down to the bottom will only be about 1 ounce 3 foot from the bait.

Curses!!!!!! I am going night fishing at Marsxlokk with Redbus, & I was hoping to get a boat trip out with Placebo on the weekend, but seeing as our visit coincides with our wedding anniversary, our son has "done us a favour" by booking us into a hotel on Gozo for Saturday night, so we can "have a nice meal & celebrate" >:( >:( >:(
Despite "er indoors" thinking how nice it will be, it means writing off Saturday & Sunday unless we go early Saturday morning, & get back in time to wash & shave ready for Gozo :(
I do wish people would mind their own b****y business, I REALLY look forward to going to Gozo >:(, when I could/should be fishing!

Blue skip I should be in Malta from the 17/09/2009 & leave on the 28/09/2009 so contact me & hopefully we can go fishing as I live in Marsascala , Hopefully we can do some more better fishing than the Pier. I know the feeling as I fish from the Pier most Winter days. You can come too Redbus if you are there , I promised the last get together we had at Marsascala & I do not forget.

Sounds good Tatanka anything that beats the pier is fine by me, although I did enjoy myself catching small stuff down there, I spun, fly fished, legered, paternostered, & float fished, in fact I totally surrounded them.
The highlight of the week was when a Russian woman came down & sat on the wall by the side of me, & took her top off :o I missed a load of bites after that for some reason. It was fine until my wife came down with my daughter-in-law on their way home from shopping >:( How was I supposed to influence this woman to put her tits away? I dont speak Russian  :D

Good One Blueskip , I must go fishing there in summer time too  ;) then because in Winter to only thing that can come next to me on the pier is a wave which is very unplesant if caught in the moment. That is what I really call a cold shower.

Just drop me a PM when you are over & we will get Redbus to come with us & go fishing on the boat.

We will have to be organised, because I wont be there until mid morning Wed 23rd & we are going to Gozo >:( (I assume Saturday afternoon coming back Sunday) & we fly back home on 30th, doesn't give us much time to do the maximum amount of fishing. We will certainly take Tatanka up on his offer of boat fishing if the weather is suitable, I have a load of 50lb class boat stuff over there & quite a few deep divers & surface poppers I would like to try.
The Freeport is a good spot & the gars should be there at that time, plenty of bream & mullet to be caught on the pole there close in, especially if you use groundbait, if you get a chance keep all your stale bread & we can mash it up in a bucket with some fish oil to use as groundbait ;D Wish I didn't have to go to bloody Gozo at the weekend, I hate all that sort of c**p! >:( I'd much rather be fishing, I bought a sign for my Landrover which reads, "If they dont have fishing heaven, I'm not going!"

I will get my local grocer (Tommy) to keep his stale bread for me.I have found that if you mix a few tins of sardiens in oil in with the bread it makes a difference and they are cheap to buy.Buy the way,how far above the water will we be fishing,or can you get right down to the waters edge?

If we go midweek when people are in work, we should be ok for a spot 4/6ft above the water, if you go at the weekend when everybody is off work & its busy, if you dont get there in the dark then we might have to fish from a different spot higher above the water, the early bird gets the worm ;)
I like the idea of the sardines in oil, I do that back here with carp groundbait for bream & triggerfish from the wreck in Oxwich Bay, it really makes a difference. How are we going to be fixed for transport? I might be able to borrow my daughter in laws jeep when she isn't in work,  otherwise I might hire a car for a few days, where are you living? if I get the car I can pick you up on the way. I managed to end up at the gates of the power station last time out when I arranged to meet Placebo outside the church in Marsoxlokk :o so somebody who knows where they are going would be a help! :D

That sounds a fair way of handicapping the competition, the sort of tactics I would use too, have no fear Adrian I will be contacting you in plenty of time, & now all my tackle has been delivered to Malta there is nothing I cant attempt, I fancy a crack around the Blue Grotto area is it called Wied el Zurig? it looks frighteningly deep & wild there, never know what is lurking in the depths!!!!!

I am upset enough that it has been planned for us to go to Gozo on Saturday to celebrate our anniversary, not that I have anything against Gozo but it means that I wont be able to fish on Sunday until after we get back! >:( >:( >:( So instead of boat fishing with Placebo during the day, I will be on Marsascala Pier in the evening trying to catch tiny mullet, wrasse & little bream :(

I will give it my best shot, what time are we meeting, & where? is there somewhere that is unmissable on the waterfront where we can meet up? & have you got a spot to fish picked out? ie the deepest part? or the nearest place to where they dump the fish guts? is there an area that might hold big fish that can hide there & only come out after dark to scavenge?
I have only ever been to the market there I have never studied the water so it will be all new to me, I need to know where we are going to fish, just in case I have to show my face at this bloody BBQ being done by the "outlaws", I dont want to arrive & have to walk miles looking for some other dull anglers! :D

Fishing confirmed for Thursday night.Meet at 8pm opposite Ritzu resteraunt which is on the left side of the front(looking out to sea). There is a small slipway into the sea there will be fishing close to that.Robby017 has kindly offered me a lift there as he is comming to watch or he might stay all night. Will be fishing where they dump the fish guts.I  am takeing a float rod as well to use while we wait for Nessie to show up.Mike.d may be comming as well confirm if you are.Anyone else who wants to watch or take part is welcome,so is free cisk and food if you want to bring it for us.Only thing to spoil the night is rain.A shower is OK but I don,t want to sit all night in the pouring rain.I haven,t got the gear for it over here  ;D  ;D  ;D  ;D  ;D

Cool! provided Ryanair dont do the ultimate "cut price" deal (& the engines stop over the Alps) I will be there Thursday night! went to the tackle shop today & bought 50kg wire & crimps for some traces for these "monsters", I will bring a float rod as well, only problem how do we see a float in the dark? should I go & get some of those chemical lights that fit on the float, they are cheap enough to buy!
Getting all excited now with only a few days to go, like a big kid! "er indoors" said "we need to take some stuff over for Robert"! "yes dear" ::) no ******* chance! my tackle goes in before my clothes, Robert can go take a hike! :D
