Insomma it was the first alonga on Shisha.. closer to 9kg. but I cannot understand how we caught just 1! I was supposed to have a professional with me.... lol- we ended up teaching him!!! And Robby taught me (or tried to teach me) how to handle the waves. it was very rough out there and coming in it was even worse.... lots of turbulance...lol

Well Done to ForTuna !! We were out there aswell but got no strikes !!
There was a lot of activity out there, from swordish jumping out of the water to dolphins surfacing and swimming underneath my boat to other fishing jumping out that looked like tuna !!
Hope it will go better next time

True as Ed explained... we were fishing in 300 m depth ... and strikes were concentrated in a particular area ....we had the 1st strike around 7am on a surface lure and as the sun came up we had strikes couple of metres deeper

Fortuna and Ed, did you get multiple strikes or several single strikes?
And Fortuna what system would you recommend to keep the lures a couple of meters down at alungi trolling speed which is quite high?

Title: Re: Alungi/Albacore Trolling/Catches
Post by: ed2112 on June 15, 2009, 22:12:08 CET
I followed some good advice I found on the forum (I think it was gaffer) and waited 10 seconds before slowing down after getting a strike. We got at least three double strikes like this!!

We had both surface lures and rapala type lures and we were catching on both. Speed around 6 knots, and lures quite close to the boat.

We could not weigh the fish on board cos could not find the scales and since we were gutting them immediately could not weigh them at home but we had a couple which I am sure were over 10kg. I will put some pics up and maybe some one can maybe guess the weight for me.

Thanks

Ed

Guys,

Where do you suggest I try first for Alungi, outside Filfa or outside Gnejna/Cirkewwa area? I leave from Xemxija so Cirkewwa/Gnejna area is closer for me......

Thanks

Post by: skip on June 16, 2009, 13:22:10 CET
Steve, I'm gonna try around 12-16nm outside of Gnjena/Cirkewwa saves me going all the way down south. Might not be so productive but worth a shot.
Title: Re: Alungi/Albacore Trolling/Catches
Post by: SteveGB on June 16, 2009, 14:31:37 CET
Yes, was thinking of doing that due to the fact that some Alungi where caught in that area. Maybe whilst I'm out there and if I do not have any takes will move a bit towards the south. Maybe Gaffer will let us know from where he caught this morning!. Should be going out on Thursday!

Thanks

Well, as posted earlier in the day (thanks to Blackberry technology direct from the fishing zone) Our day started at 6.00am with the centre rod deployed.  No sooner was I extending the 1s toutrigger that the rachet was buzzing away and the reel peeling out line. From the on, until about 9.03am, we were regularly hit.  No multiple hookups, just singles.  Till 9.30am, we had already 8 alungi, between 6 and 8.5Kgs. We trolled SW and W of filfla, around the 2nd ridge, between 12 and 15 Kmiles from shore.  By 11.30am, we were right behind filfla due S, and now heading inward, we decided to call it a day, I brought the boat down to dead slow, and whammm.....the Stbd outrigger bent over and we were hit again.  This time, a 10Kg alunga took the lure. So, in all, a good days catch, 9 alongi.  Not bad for the opening of the season.  Kris and his brother had a hell of a time reeling in Alongi, and that my friends, is what its all about.

Joe, (the_gaffer), thanks very much (from me & my brother) for today's fantastic day!! :D :o ;D :D ;D ;D

I heard a lot about your reputation as being an expert in alungi, and I must say that yes, you are the man!! you put us directly spot on in the alungi hot spot and in no time, me and my brother were reeling in our 1st alunga ever caught or seen live!! :D after that, we were reeling in 1 alunga after the other!!

the fishing gear that you use is no joke either, all top quality rods and reels and the famous intimidating 7 rod spread 8)

apart from having a very nice character the_gaffer is also completely open to how he works...showing and teaching me and my brother the knowledge to successfully catch alungi.

well, what can I say, thanks again for this fantastic day as it will be one of those that myself and my brother will surely never forget!

will post pics in the gallery of the alungi trip tomorrow.

SDweather and Airmalta weather dont inidicate that, Sunday yes but saturday no.
Maltaweather i dont realy rely on anymore.....
But if like fortuna you are going to put down the boat from gnejna be carefull..just a little bit of wind from the opposite direction of the slip and you wont be able to pull the boat or will do damage because there the sea will run up and down alot at gnejna...
It would be better if you go from xemxija,
ahjar hekk milli ghar !

cos it recieves data from a differant and more sophisticated weatherstation.....  one can forcast for a week but chances of getting it wrong are say 10%, whilst the other can give you a much more accurate reading but over a shorther period of time, i.e. 3 days. with say 1 % chance for error.

Title: Re: Alungi/Albacore Trolling/Catches
Post by: shanook on June 17, 2009, 20:28:44 CET
at this time of the year force 3 is nice to go out on the water fishing for alungi as it wont be too hot. From September onwards you have to be more careful with force 3. The sea reacts different it is stronger and with more crests.
An 18' should handle force 3 with ease.
Title: Re: Alungi/Albacore Trolling/Catches
Post by: SteveGB on June 17, 2009, 20:30:36 CET
Yes I know Busumark, but last year went for Lampuki with a similar forecast and got stuck out 18miles with force 5 weather. Its not that the boat did not handle well but it took me 3.5 hours to get slowly back to Xemxija. So I try and always be a bit cautions.....

guys I went out today and caught 6 nice sized alongi and lost 1 with the best lure I had today. This year it seems a good year for alongi because at our area people are catching good amounts. The weather was nice this morning but at about 11 a.m wind picked up rapidly and the sea changed a lot it became force 4-5 although in the port was very nice. I see windfinder forecast and i find it very accurate but in my opinion see other wetaher forecast also.

Can someone please suggest how much line is best to be let out whilst fishing for Alungi??? I usually leave approx 40/50 meters for my two side rods and I use a 250g (rod 1) and a 200g (rod 2) weight respectively. These are placed 10 meters before the swivel connected to the lure using 2m of Floro. I then have a daisy chain in the middle which I leave closer approx 30/35 meters. Would appreciate any reply as I have checked in previous discussions and could not find anything with regards to the distance of the lure from the boat whilst trolling. Thanks a lot.
Title: Re: Alungi/Albacore Trolling/Catches
Post by: shanook on June 19, 2009, 11:41:19 CET
I usually let out between (30 to 35 qama) 180' to 210' for alungi but if u want to put an extra lure approximately 300' for a swordfish or pastardella.
if u have two different weights dont forget that u have to turn on the heavier weight to avoid tangles.
Whats the idea of having the daisy chain in the middle thats not very healthy in my opinion. it should be closer to ur hooked lure. You said u are using a 2 mtr florocarbon, i would connect it to the end of the daisy chain. so u have  gap of 2 mtr from the daisy to the lure.
if possible the hooked lure should be  bit bigger than the lures of the chain or else if the same size keep the lures of the chain  in one colour and the hooked lure of a different colour.
Title: Re: Alungi/Albacore Trolling/Catches
Post by: SteveGB on June 19, 2009, 11:45:29 CET
Shannok thanks for your reply. The daisy chain is a separate line. I leave 3 lines out...2 rods on the side and a daisy chain in the middle as a teaser...at the end of the daisy chain i have a bigger/different coloured squid which is hooked. Sorry might have not explained well myself. So 30 to 35 qama how much is that in meters?
Title: Re: Alungi/Albacore Trolling/Catches
Post by: robby017 on June 19, 2009, 11:46:57 CET
54m - 63m
Title: Re: Alungi/Albacore Trolling/Catches
Post by: The_Gaffer on June 19, 2009, 12:12:49 CET

Its a matter of preference. My furthest lure is 35mtr and then all lures are positioned closer to the boat. I like tp have q lure just outside the propwash, especially an aggressive working lure (flat head or jet head).
Title: Re: Alungi/Albacore Trolling/Catches
Post by: robby017 on June 19, 2009, 12:25:03 CET
I, on the other hand, prefer to run a middle line 45-50 fathoms away (81-90m) with a 350-500g weight, 15 fathoms away from the lure

Title: Re: Alungi/Albacore Trolling/Catches
Post by: skip on June 19, 2009, 17:41:02 CET
Most fish tend to strike coming in from the sides so the theory is that you want to have your attractors (daisy chains etc) on the two outside rods, especially Steve if you then run a rod down the center closer in. But don't put a daisy chain on that if you're only running 3 rods.

Have an aggresive lure or Rapala style just behind the prop wash or just inside (up to you).....the theory goes that you raise the fish with the daisy chains on the outside who come up and across to investigate and then are drawn in to your centre rod if you're running a total of 3.

The long centre is used to target anything that maybe came up late or is looking for a struggling bait.

My chase baits are no more than 1m behind the last daisy....always bigger/diff colour
Title: Re: Alungi/Albacore Trolling/Catches
Post by: SteveGB on June 19, 2009, 18:29:26 CET
Thanks skip for the advice.
I was aware that the daisy chains are used on the outside to attract the fish but due to me not having any spreaders or a rod holder in the middle of the boat the only place where I could tie the daisy chain was in the middle (due to it being on a hand line). So basically, currently I am running two rods on each side and the daisy chain in the middle! I know this is not the best setup possible but I usually fish with two rods only on each side so I thought why not set up a daisy chain in the middle! I?m sure it will do more good than without! I might be wrong also, what do u think?

Afternoon guys, as predicted by windfinder , this morning the sea was really calm and we headed out from gnejna early morning. We had our first strike at 6am.....6 alungi on board by 7 30 am. we kept trolling and by 9am we had 3 other alungi onboard, 2 of which on a double strike - 2nd double strike of the day. Final count 9 alungi by 10am.

Hi
I am thinking of going out for alunghi for the first time. I have a 16 feet boat with 50hp outboard and a spare 9.9hp. do you think it safe to go out on this size of boat? Is it too small to go 10 miles out? Any advice please? Thanks
Title: Re: Alungi/Albacore Trolling/Catches
Post by: bigboy on June 20, 2009, 21:19:45 CET
That size of boat is good always depending on the weather. Tryu not to go out in more than force 3 and make sure that no wind is forcasted for the evening as it make pick up early. Always make sure you have a VHF and GPS onboard aswell as life jackets and flares as no one knows what may happen out there. Always I recomend that you have some credit in your mbile at least 5Euros (fimt Fortuna :P) as if you run out of credit at the time when ytou need it the most you are Fu***d.

Last but not least know ur boat

I guess that's one way of looking at it Shanook, though the inside of the boat still needs a good clean tomorrow. It just seemed to take twice as long to land the fish than with using a gaff. Suppose it was good practice for if I ever hook up with a BFT this season now that we must release them.

We caught 2 one 5kg and one 7kg we caught them while troling about 3 to 5 km outside filfla but by 8.30 we head to head back we were restricted by time. One was caught at about 7.00 on a deep diver with a 500gr lead while the other was caught on a surface lure half an hour later. There were some boats around and from what I could see some of them caught somthing too.

NO NO DJS u will definitely not land a BTF )especially the over 50kg ones) by grabbing it from tail by hand......if u had a tail noose yes but not by hand. Alungi are different

guys .. i'm just starting to fish for alungi for the  first time

.. is any place 6-12miles out of malta good for alungi or do you have to follow certain angles, bearings, directions etc.  I'm talking about the south of malta [filfla area] mostly?
.. sajd bir-rixa book recommends trolling speeds of 4-10knots [but thats a hell of a difference] .. what is the most likely speed to allow for a bite?

many thanks for all your help.

Title: Re: Alungi/Albacore Trolling/Catches
Post by: The_Gaffer on June 22, 2009, 10:12:55 CET
Hi Polidmar, and welcome to the forum.  Your best bet is to troll at a speed of 6 to 6.5 knots.  The range you mention is good as well.  Anywhere in the 6-12 mile range out on the west coast (filfla area) is a good place to troll for alongi.  As soon as you arrive at the 1sst ridge (l-ewwel xifer) deploy your lures, and troll the area well.  Look out for surface activity, splashes and other boats which might have hooked up.
Title: Re: Alungi/Albacore Trolling/Catches
Post by: polidmar on June 22, 2009, 10:53:09 CET
Thanks for your feedback Gaffer. By 'troll the area well' .. does it mean that you troll in circles (diameter large enough to avoid messing the lures together) or troll diagonally zigagging?  Or should one just release the lures and head straight out?  So if you see commotion [perhaps shearwater] should i steer into them?
Title: Re: Alungi/Albacore Trolling/Catches
Post by: Jonathan on June 22, 2009, 11:37:00 CET
Hi Polidmar,
We're usually talking about biggish areas so trolling in circles is not exactly suited.
As for boat speeds, yep in our book we did mention a wide range as it depends on the type of lure that you're running.
My recommendation would be to first pick the lure that you intend using, drop it in and see at which speed it swims best. Good luck :)

Go to Whitesails nr the Blackpearl (Msida Marina) buy the admirality chart of Maltese waters which will show you the bottom contours and the ridges (xifer) and then run parallel with them, effectively parallel with the West coast. in some areas you go across but that's why the map is useful.

No circles.

What you talking about Colin good thing that Puttinu kept u on the hard, All we had was lousy weather so u didnt miss anything.
Mine still in garage will launch mid next week. Maybe have a go on the weekend either deep drop or come round to B'Bugia for a runout.

Eh think of it ..you are right, didnt miss much ta....Puttino has kept me off many "things" these last few months..insomma I do not mind cos things have gone pretty smooth (I say this now that the mag is out..phew!)....all that we now wish is to have a great day on the 26th.... ehhh can't tell you the number of boats taking part as at today cos my "master" will be upset, taqbislu.. but its going to be another mountain to climb for Skip & Gogo and all those involved.

Sure the weather has been awfull, allura leaving my boat at the yard is good for "her". Inshalla all goes well next week when you put to sea, ma tafx after so many months "asleep" things do not always function correctly.

Shhh..I hear that there are a few interesting large "swimmers" around the 3 legged rig (jack-up) next to Hurds Bank which has been sitting there for the last 2 years....first sea "trial" would be that direction and not the other side.

According to SD weather, my hunch is right.  Closer to mid-June, the temperature starts to raise, and wind conditions become more favourable.  We seem to have 2 weeks of wind on the radar screen at the moment.  Not a good omen.  Catch reports might be low

Some were 50m some were 80m and some 100m.
This is why I will be taking jigging lessons soon :)

Anyway what kind of fish can be found in the open water travelling in that depth?
