Title: New Members - Please Introduce Yourselves
Post by: skip on August 28, 2008, 08:19:01 CET
The number of members in the forum is growing on a daily basis, so it would be beneficial to all if new members post a small introduction so that everyone can get an idea on what they are interested in, where they are from etc.

The introduction might include:

Not everyone likes to fill out their member profile so replying to this topic will help in many ways.

I just saw this section now, and since I am relatively new I'd like to introduce myself.

Roberto
I live in Ibrag.  I work in a leading 5 star hotel.  I do not have my own boat, but my fishing buddy has one, and we mostly troll around the coastal area with live bait in late spring/early summer, lumpuki in late summer, and calamari from autumn to mid-spring.  I also make it a point to dedicate a couple of outings to alungi and deep sea fishing, usually with Chris of Fishingmania.

My preferred type of fishing is live bait, though I REALLY like jigging even though I get very little fishing time since I am not the boss on the boat!!!

Hi everyone, I'm Keith from Attard and I happen to like anything that belongs to the sea. I got to know about this forum through google and seems like it is a great place to gain knowledge and share experiences. I have a sea rover 128 powered by a honda 30hp from which I go trolling and bottom fishing, although this is the first year we went for lampuki with it. I have been out a couple of times for longfin tuna with my friends and with quite good success. I also like shore fishing, spinning, spearfishing, kayaking and some underwater photography. Would like to try kayak fishing for lampuki this year before the season ends.

Great forum, keep posting :)

Post by: Walter on September 12, 2008, 13:03:04 CET
Hi all,

My name is Walter. I'm from Holland. I work for the local government of The Hague.
In my sparetime I like to go fishing from the beaches/peers near my hometown. My favourite fish to catch are: Garfish, Seabass, Cod and sole (not the ones under shoes).
I only bring home fish of the right sizes and in small quantities (for personal use only). Everything else I catch, I release. Although there are no official rules for fishing from beaches in Holland, I think this is a good thing to do for the local marinelife. Whenever I go fishing in other countries, I try to look up the rules for fishing in those countries. So I'm interrested in rules for fishing on Malta/Gozo...

My wife and I are going to visit Malta and Gozo for the very first time.
After visiting Malta we hope to relax on Gozo (from october 4th till october 12th) and do some fishing. I'm planning to bring my own rods with me and try to catch fish from the coast/beach. It would be nice if we can catch some fish to take to the apartment for the bbq or to frie. So we're interrested in locations on Gozo for (coast/beach)-fishing, kinds of edible fish one can catch and the techniques and type of baits used.
Any info is welcome...

Thanks to Google we've found this forum.

Greetings to all in Malta  I am from Lancashire in England my name is Norman. I am to Old to mention here but Ilove to fish if there is water with fish in then I will have a go at fishing it. Here in England I own a 14 foot Icelander fishing boat with a 15 HP out board wich I keep at home. I travel to Malta 3 or 4 times a year for the good company and the fishing. I can usually be found sitting like a little garden gnome on the end of the jetty at Buggiba harbour or on the concrete steps behind Georges Sea food restaraunt near to the square. I shall be back in Malta at the end of October for a month so I might meet some of you then bye bye for now

Hi guys, wellcome to all. I don t write in this topic due that wish to leave only posts from new members. Due that malta is small, I suggest that placeing a picture connected to the post (own picture with a catch) and even the town will be more helpful.

For example I used to talk with rammx and freeman without knowing that where from siggiewi. Like this we can arrange and meet up more easy even for just 2hr fishing or diving

Hi all!
I just want to introduce myself and say hi!
I've been a member for a month or so but this is my first post.
great job, I love the site.

I've been fishing since I was a kid with my dad in australia and the Uk where I grew up.I've been in malta for 10 years and love to fish, But I have to tell you though, I feel sorry for malta and alll it's anglers because over the years it seems that the fish here are disappearing fast.  It's about time that Maltese authorities did something to protect and conserve the seas, not just for fishing but for the enjoyment of everyone.
Admittedly there are rules, but no-one to enforce them.

But I'll still keep fishing, just because it's the only thing that keeps me sane!!!
Once again nice job with the site.
I'll post again soon enough (that's if I catch anything worth noting.)
cu all

Also have a look in the Ledgering sub board.

Title: Tracina
Post by: Tracina on April 02, 2009, 15:46:17 CET
Hello everyone,
My name is Alessandro, and starting in August 2009 my parents will be moving to Malta for a good 6 years! For me it?s a dream come true. I am Italian, born in Rome, but at present I am living in Belfast, Northern Ireland, where I am currently studying for a PhD in Pharmacy. My project involves ?Drug Discovery from the Marine Environment? (i.e. new drugs from the sea). Yeah!!!
I am thirty, and I have been fishing for thirty years. Fishing is my passion, my life, and can I say? My disease. I fish from the coast with anything that ranges from a piece of string and a hook, to ?Bolognese?, Surf Casting, Rock Fishing, Spinning, Fly Fishing and Spear Fishing. I freshwater fish too. Girlfriends, friends and family probably think of me as some sort of freak!!! But they?ve learned to accept it. I don?t have a boat, and I?ve never had one. Maybe Malta is the right place to get a hold of a little speedboat... but who knows, one step at a time 
My nickname is Tracina, ?Weaver fish? in English. I lie low, but if you step on me, it will hurt.
I am looking forward to meeting some of you guys in person soon! Maybe tangling our lines!

Tracina

Hi everybody! I joined the forum a couple of weeks ago and find it realy useful, excellent stuff. I'm going to visit Malta next month and will be staying in the Paceville/Saint Julians area. I'm looking forward to spending some time trying my luck fishing from the shore, mostly spinning but not only. Any tips regarding the area, "do's and don'ts", preffered rod configuration, any places specifically worth checking out, what to expect ?
Thanks a lot and keep up the great work!

Hi Darnok, welcome to the forum. Check out the Shore Fishing - General and Shore Fishing - Spinning Boards, you should find some useful info.

I know the General board has a few posts on good places to go etc.

Hopefully I will find the time to put this kind of initial info up on the main website for people coming from overseas wanting to fish in Malta, to help them along.

Thanks for your welcome Skip,
Joe used to own fishing trawlers in the UK.  Now he has a couple of tuna boats fishing out of Malta somewhere, if you could mention it to others for me that would be great.  The industry in UK is getting tougher i have crews that do not speak English and have no expereince its dangerous really.  Any help you can give would be much appreciated, twenty years of fishing  a spell working in the sunshine would be great.

Thanks

This Sunday I am hopefully going to try for Alongi. I dont have much time so I think I will head out of paradise bay about 15-20 miles cos I see there are some drop offs there.

Lets see how it goes...

Hi all

i am a new member my name is Adin from sannat Gozo, aged 16 started fishing when i learned to walk. i like mostly bottom fishing (tal qiegh) both by boat and from land on the cliffs. my favorite method is fishing with reel and trolling by boat. I fish in early mornings and evening every day and in summer i live by the sea. but my biggest passion is trolling during the lampuki season. my future plan is getting an electrical reel for deep sea fishing

thats all for now
hope to learn more

Hi all,

I'm new to boat fishing after an endless long winter fishing from land.

I recently bought a Buccanneer 15ft powered by a 50hp Johnson and cannot wait to go to sea as soon as the wind calms down. I'll be moored at Mellieha for a while.

I'm interested both in trolling and Tal-qiegh.

Dear All

First I would like to introduce myself. My Name is Ivan and I am from Malta. I am 40 years old and fishing is my passion.

I had the opportunity to go on a boat sharing trip with The Gaffer and the others last Monday. It was a bit disappointing really but on the other hand we were a good team and still managed to enjoy ourselves whilst there.

I still look forward should there be a next time, maybe we'll be much luckier.

Hi, I'm Steve and have an 18 ft Marinello powered by Yamaha 85 .... I like anything fishy but am afraid I am a Jack of all trades master of none... so from Vopi with small rod to bottom fishing to lampuki to the occassional fishing expedition with the real professionals for netting lampuki. Am moored at Beachaven and have been following this forum since last year. Like the way its been kept in check and therefore there is not much nosense. A big prosit to all administrators.

Good morning guys.  Found this forum whilst I was looking for maltese fish name translations.

I am a big fan of this sport.  Used to fish all summer long when I was aged six to fourteen. From the shore, spear fishing, from a small boat which my grandfather owned. Anything.  We used to go out on the Kemmuna fish farms and catch really nice vopi, pagri and all the likes.  One time we caught this fish with wings which none of the seasoned fishermen could recognise.

Unfortunately then my grandfather passed away and one starts getting into studies, work etc and stopped fishing. Last two years I have picked it up again.  Going for the vopi from the shore, mainly to relax a couple of hours.

Anyways, wanted to introduce myself and if anyone has any nice spots for the vopi in the northern area of Malta i'd appreciate that a lot.

See you around.

Hi to everybody,
I'm Emanuel from Naxxar, own a chaudraun 13 open boat.
I am employed as a leading draughtsman with the Works Division.
I like to fish....no matter what type of fishing technique as long as I fish!
Usally I tend to go bait fishing from shore using mainly the running float technique and also bait fishing from my boat with a 'paternoster'..when I find time and some help to launch my boat...because I had a 'mazra' at ta l'ghazzelejn..St Paul's Bay, but some kind person took my place where I used to keep my boat...
at the moment am trying to find another place where to keep boat moored ???.
I also like to go for lampuki, tunnag and cervjol.
Insomma...I like to fish ;)

Hi all, My name is sean and am going to be staying in Malta from October onwards, I used to fish as a boy back in England and have never been since. I would like to get involved with fishing again but am not sure of the best ways to go about doing it. Is there any companys over here that would offer a one or 2 day course or something to show me how to bait up and cast properly, also what types of rods and reels need to be used for the type of fishing here. Any help or information would be most welcome.  Sean.Heart83@googlemail.com

Thankyou all.

Hello people, found this forum last night, through Google, and by accident - was looking form information on rowing boats.  Not into fishing myself, but like to follow most things maritime.  Name Mario, btw, from Qormi but spend lots of time in Marsascala, particularly in summer.  Don't own a boat, but like boats (armchair sailor here!).  Have now read several posts and must say I'm very pleased to have found this forum.  Well done!

Hi all,

I am new to this forum so I?d like to introduce myself:

My name is Christian, I am from Naxxar. I have found this very interesting forum using Google. Currently I don?t own any boat but wish to own one in the near future. I am interested mainly in bottom fishing and in the last few weeks I have tried twice some spinning from shore. I don?t go fishing very often, but I always do my best to do so when I have some free time.

Thanks,
Good day!

Hello folk, my name is John and I am from England.

Along with my son I am coming on a holiday in Bugibba.

We would be grateful if anybody can tell us where is the best spots for shore fishing.

Have checked out the charters but they cost too much, I have posted in the share cost section but so far no reply.

What we would like to know also is do you have to buy a licence or can you just fish off the harbour wall.

Some countries do not allow fisherman to give their catch away, what are the rules and regulations on Malta.

Post by: skip on September 27, 2009, 16:50:28 CET
Welcome

You can fish with no licence but I would advise you have a look at the Local Fishing Regulations on the forum so you can get an idea of minimum sizes.

You can catch and release or catch and eat, but you cannot catch and sell.

Alot of people have taken their boats out the water at the moment due to the bad weather. By all means post a reminder in the cost sharing section.

Hi all,

I should have posted here first so here is a belated introduction.

As my title suggests I'm Alan and I live in Brighton uk!

I do mainly boat fishing as I have a small shetland boat that I get out on as often as possible (weather permitting!!).

I also do charters about once a month to get out to the deep wrecks that are too far for us to attempt in a 17 ft boat and to go for the bigger Pollock and Cod.

My mum lives in Melliha so I get out to Malta as often as possible and absolutly love the place, friendly people, nice weather and no thoughts about work!

I'll be over on the 25th of Oct for 10 days and would love to get a line wet whilst I'm there so anyone who knows of a charter that may have a space or could just give me some advice on how to fish from the shore in the North of the island please give me a shout.

I've seen some great posts on here and would like to be able to contribute at some point in the future.

Alan.

Hi Alan,
I do cost sharing trips, similar to chartering, only you pay much less.  My boat is a 26' Trojan sportsfisher.  You say you'll be in Malta on the 25/10, for 10 days, so I'm sure we can find a weather window open to go out for Lampuki...
Lets keep in touch, and I'll let you know.

Hi guys, I guess I'm the newest newbie around here...

My name is Jamie and I'm 21 years old, from Rabat.
I love fishing but up till now I have only done shore fishing for small fish. I joined this forum as I'd like to go after bigger fish and learn how to properly use the reel and the respective baits. I dont have a boat so my fishing is limited to the shoreline unfortunately :(

So anyways, hello to all and cheers for the wonderful forum :p

Good evening, my name is Joe, 64 years old and I live in Horsham near Gatwick. I have a 16 foot caitlin fishing boat which unfortunately I don't get to use as much as I would like. i'm a reasonably competent sea angler both from boat and shore. The reason that i'm posting on here is because i'm going to Malta next may for a week mainly to do some fishing. OK I have a 20lb boat rod, a lightweight uptide rod and various beachcasters so with regard to rods, what would you advise me to bring. I like to do a lot of my fishing with artificials and have spoons, various jelly eels/ shads etc so again any advice would be very welcome.

Thank you guys for the warm welcome :p

Right now I'm looking around the site for info on catching the lizz. Never tried spinning....For some reason i am always afraid of the line snapping :(
When I usually try for some deep fish i always get the line caught in some rocks...very annoying.
2 weeks ago I lost 3 sets of paternoster, I believe its called, at cirkewwa.

Most of the time if you don't get stuck it's not a good spot.Spinning is not as easy as it seems but you shouldn't be afraid of the line, use a good quality 0.25 or 0.30 and thats it for cudas.

Hello to all  ;),

Came across this forum while searching on Google for some info re shore fishing in Malta/Gozo, as I do not own a boat. Well done for this forum. Its very well kept and alive!

When I was a kid I was crazy about fishing, although simple shore fishing. Nothing professional, just enjoying the hobby as it is. Used to go fishing with my uncle & dad, mostly at Wied iz-Zurrieq (fuq l-idejn... tal-genn), San Lucjan, Wied ix-Xoqqa, Cirkewwa, etc. I loved fishing and I have very nice memories. Some of them were a bit crazy for that age, example going on high dangerous cliffs  ;D with my uncle to throw "nassi" for vopi and cawl, or on a small frejgatina "bir-rixa" or for bottom fishing "fuq l-idejn" under the cliffs...

Getting older, I had some friends who owned a boat and we used to go for Lampuki. Once we used a "konz" (not sure if its called a "konz") with approx 20 hooks with lures, and while casting it for the first time, we got 12 nicely sized tumbrell (or tuna) all at once! Oh what an experience... will never forget it... we had the boat RED with blood in just 5mins, with all the fish jumping around our feet on the small boat!

In my late 20s, while studying and getting married,  ::) I had to forget fishing due to other commitments.

This late summer, by coincidence, my kid had a fishing activity organised by the school. So with this excuse, we bought new fishing rods and some lines and I took the opportunity to try and get started again.

And I think I'm hooked again!!... and seems even my kid is hooked! He liked it very much and he's very keen to go fishing now.

I'm trying to find good places from shore, especially in the south, as until now we only got small fish like vopi, zabri and some other small species...  >:(

If anyone can help me with "good places" for shore fishing, I appreciate.

I'm interested in descent size fish (which you can cook at least), whatever it is... although even good sized Vopi will do...

BTW > SORRY for the LONG introduction!

Keep it up!  ;)

First of all welcome to the Forum. Secondly, if your sons' fishing activity was in cikewwa, I was their with the organizer, it was a very good outing. I would like to add that now the time is coming for the big vopa. For shure it will give you satisfaction when you catch it and it is good to eat. Good luck.

Any help re shore fishing from the rocks, especially "fuq l-idejn", would be appreciated, whatever the fish...  ;)

BTW, where do I have to post such questions? I guess this is not the right section of the forum eh?

Hi everyone, I am new to this forum and it looks very interesting and informative.

I live in Siggiewi and have 28 years of age.  When I was a kid I used to go fishing in front of our house in M'Scala, with a normal rod and we used to catch a handful of small fish.

Last week I decided to purchase a normal rod and a reel rod, and some tackle to start spending some time, instead of staying in bed in the early morning.  Due to the fact that I live in Siggiewi, can anyone suggest and interesting spot in Ghar Lapsi or in the vicinities, where I can at least enjoy some fishing.  Of course I understand that there is nothing guaranteed, but at least I won't go in a spot where definitely no fish are present.

Thanks in advance guys.

lol....... although its a joke......... it is also true as you do not know where a nice fish may decide to lurk around..... trial and error is the key to success.... look for places with the natural habitat of the fish you are after  ;) , as in don't expect to catch deep sea fish, in 1 meter of water on a sandy beach....

Hello Guys
New to the forum and new to sea fishing, any help or advice would be greatfully recieved.
I am from the U.K. moved out here to lovely Malta, Feb this year.
I have done some fishing off Blackpool with one of my mates, which is completely different to the fishing here.
I have bought myself a Carver 280, with twin mercruser engines, giving me around 410hp and she is moored on the pontoons in Tax'biex.
I retired early, so I thought I would treat myself to a half decent boat, (something I have allways wanted) and do some fishing.
Are there any fishing marks that are recognised to yield some decent fish, or is it case of trolling around until you hit some fish.
I realise there are some deep waters around Malta, so I had a look on e bay and saw a Miya Epoch Command CX-4 Big Game Electric Reel, which I thought was very reasonble priced, so I sent for it, a second hand reel that looked nearly new in the photographs.
The seller was in Japan and once I paid for the reel he dispatched it by EMS, a few days ago, it arrived in Malta on Friday, but is being held by customs, I have to pay €15 because it has come from a country outside Europe and also I may have to pay VAT/duty on the reel, I just hope they dont rip me off.
As I say any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Russell, welcome to the forum.

Well done on the boat as you say why not treat yourself :) You'll be able to do some serious offshore fishing and you can challenge The Gaffer at next years Alungi competition in June :)

Trolling wise the West coast is the most productive running along the various ridges just out from filfla. Deep bottom fishing I would stay on the West coast for now and experiment with spots.

If it's come by EMS you're paying €15 for them to process the clearance on your behalf and deliver it to your house, much easier than going and queuing!! They will then take the invoice value plus shipping and work around 5% duty and then 18% VAT on top of that as charges.

Before you sign for the package when the delivery guy comes, open and check everything thoroughly especially as you're likely to see Brown tape with Dwana ta Malta written in red (Customs) so you want to make sure that everything that should be there, is there BEFORE signing!

They won't rip you off but work off the invoice values.

Hi everyone!

I'm Grei, 32 from Mosta, fishing was always my hobby since I was a kid and it's been on and off since I can remember, but now it seems that I'm really hooked, bis serjeta, going up and down to fekruna almost everyday, spending more money at mr fish than at supermarket but it's all worth it, it makes up for all the stress, qazba, bahar, ipod, xi trid iktar?  :D

Anyways, I've been going through this forum for quite some time and it's really great, tips and all that, links, posts and most af all, everyone is very helpful, so I decided to join  ;D

I just bought a really cheap rod and reel combo from ebay, it's good to begin with as I've always used the classic pole.  I'm gonna use it with a running float, mostly at night using Korea worms.  I don't really know the fishing terms so I will try to explain, the line is 25 and I have a 25g runnung float, what is best to do?  A 15g running sinker under the float and a fergha, attached to a swivvel with a 2 hook paternoster and a 5g sinker at the end, or just a 20g sinker at the end of the paternoster, or a 20g running sinker under the float and just a fergha attaced to a swivvel with just 1 hook?  For the fergha I'm using Trilene sensi thin ultra+ 18mm 5.8kg.  Which hooks should I use?  Will fluorescent beads help?

Dear all MFF members,

Hope this note finds you all well, my name is Chris (28), keen on the outdoors, photography and travelling! Currently residing at Balzan.
Been following this very informative forum on and off for a couple of months and thanks to you all I decided to start fishing again! (After a couple years)

Have very fond memories of fishing with my grandfather and my dad! And if I start practicing this lovely hobby again, i'm sure dad will tag along and it will be a great way to spend some quality time with him and relax!

I have always practiced catch and release, (keeping the single good sized bream for mum, since myself and dad don't eat fish).
Here in Malta I do not think we take this practice seriously enough. (Not generalizing guys!) Releasing the small sized fish is Very important for conservation and sustainability, but it is also important that we do not overfish. Sometimes we catch much more then what we need.

My fishing knowledge is very limited as I have done only shore fishing and I have never used a reel rod in my life! But i'm keen to learn new techniques like spinning!  :)
Anyways, lately got myself a new tackle box, some fishing line, barbless hooks, and a grauvel fishing rod.

In the summer months I spend a lot of time at sea on my Suzumar SIB, powered by a Suzuki 9.9 DF (4 stroke). Never used it for fishing but would like to learn how to troll.

Wishing you all a happy Christmas and a healthy 2010!!  :)

Cheers,
Chris

Hi guys. Have been posting recently but not yet introduced myself. My name is Kevin, 42 years, from Rabat but reside in Dingli. Graphic designer by profession. Have been fishing since I was a young boy because we have a summer residence St. Paul's Bay. Used to catch loads of fish at that time but now it's a different story. Used to go trolling a lot with my grandfather Salvinu who was the No.1 for amberjack (cervjola) in his time. For the past 7 years I have been trolling a lot with my father Tony in St. Paul's Bay and now on the lookout to buy my new boat after I sold my 13ft frejgatina at the end of summer.

Hi , my name is carmelo and i m italian from sicily ( Catania)... i m 17 ... i live in naxxar and i have been living in malta for two year... i want to become an aeronautic pilot .... i love fishing and i took and i m taking part in fishing competition with a maltese fishing club ....i  really love to practice almost all the tecnik of fishing : 4 mullet, inglese, bolognese, bombarda, ledgering , running float, running leisure ,pater noster, surf casting ( unfortunately in Malta is not that common because there re not big beach ) nd i m always there with a 0.11-0.12 mm that make every catch a really pleasure and many times got angry wen the big sargo cut my line xD but this is fishing ... and really rarely my net to keep the fish alive (barrada ) stays empty after few hours of fishing ;) ... I love CATCH AND RELEASE and i think that this mentality must be expanded to everyone that practice this beautyfull sport..

Hi People, my name is Kevin and I am from Lija. I'm, 37 years old and I am not completely new to the hobby. I used to go fishing when I was 16 (ghal tal qih)..  I have been everywhere at that time.. by bus that time. I stopped then, and now just after I got married I bought some spinning tackle.. (also about a million lures). I went twice but caught nothing, the wind was from behind me. I know it is not the best time of the year at the moment but I still wake up early in the weekends anyway, so I get my tackle and go leaving my wife fast asleep.

I would like to target the following:
Spnott
Lizz
Cervjol
Sawrell

I have all types of lures, surface poppers, suspending, diving, diving with rattles, wriggling.. you name it I have it. I can cast quite far and the lures have good swimming motion whilst retrieving them.

What I am having difficulties is with locations. I dont mind walking 30 minutes or even more from my car but I really am stuck. I think next weekend I will try St Pauls Bay, Ta Fra Ben or Mistra area.
See you all around,
Kevin.

Hi All,

I am new to this forum and wish to introduce myself.

Age: I'm 26

Home Town: Mosta

Fishing Style: Harpooning / Trolling for Dorado, Tumbrell, Baracuda and similar fish.

Boat: 14 foot Silvercraft 25 HP Yamaha

I have known about the forum for years and actually opened this profile about a year or two ago but never actually posted anything or made use of the account. Now that a couple of friends of mine and I are going fishing more often I wish to get more close to the local fishing scene. I first heard about this forum while I was shopping at Mr Fish in Iklin.

Any questions please ask.

I have a question for anyone out there.
What is the best time of the day to fish for Lampuki?

Thanks

Hi all ,

My name is Chris, I'm 42, and I live and work in the Northeast of England. My wife and I have been going to Gozo since 2003, and we just love the island; we're seriously thinking of retiring there in about 10 years (if we can wait that long)!!

I used to sea fish as a kid with my father off the north Norfolk coast, but I can't do with the cold nights and empty bag any more, so now I fly fish for trout at a local reservoir.

I'm in Xaghra in February with the family, and then again in July, and would love to get a chance to spend some time fishing while I'm there.

I've never fished in Gozo, so I'm a complete noob at the moment. I'm looking forward to browsing the info here when time permits.

Thanks to everyone involved for putting their time/money/effort into running this forum, I've done it in the past and understand the dedication required for little thanks.

All the best,
Chris

Hi shanook,

I've got to work around my (non-fishing) family  :-\ , so a bit of shore fishing would probably be easier to start with.

If I could get in touch with someone with a boat who knows the waters, well that would be really cool too.

Cheers,
Chris

hi guys!

I'm new to this forum, actually I just registered this morning in hope of furtherly increasing my fishing knowledge and to share and listen to different opinions about methods and techniques. I'm 16 and still quite an amature in the fishing world as I haven't had anyone to teach me about the proper ways and methods to fish however over the past 5 years I've been gathering up information here and there enought to earn me a good number of sparli, brieqex, morini and the occasional sargu.

My family doesn't own a boat and therefore my fiahing is land based.......So to come to my first query for any of you who can help me out , coulld anybody give me some pointers about fishing for the elusive sargu from land because out of all the bottom dwelling fish close to shore this fish is the one I find the hardest to catch. So could anyone help me out ?

TY guys:) :)

Post by: spearfishinglog on April 16, 2011, 15:33:29 CET
I believe that Cyprus have some beauties and some problems. As about the people in Cyprus i believe that the hospitality and friendliness is like your beautiful island. Cyprus is a difficult place for spearfishing. The high sea temperature increases the salinity and that affects the   reproduction process of many species. The limited fishing area and poor sea floor force the Cypriot spearo to evolve in order to make a catch. This is not necessarily bad or a disadvantage because its also a very big challenge to find your hunting level. Thank you for the right question because this give me the opportunity  to give the right answers:)

Hi My name is Lorraine.  I'm 30 years old from Fgura.  I used to go shore fishing with my dad when I was younger.  Then as soon as we bought a boat we started to go fishing every Sunday and sometimes even Saturday.  I love fishing and use this sport as a family outing and to relax a bit.

Am a keen rod fisherman from the shore, with very little experience of boat- fishing. We used to catch all kinds of fish with just hook and line in the old days ( am 60+ now )  ,but fish are not that plentiful now. I have lately taken to spinning but am still a novice at it. Would like to learn more.

Mela Max...suddenly the "ladies" are popping out of the woodwork, how wonderful, hope they would be able to join us for the BBQ during the Tournament's closing ceremony on the 09 July.
Note has been taken of Lorzamtab's proposal, very kind....Nick & Joe pls. keep in mind.
FYI – We have today taken on board a 4 man band to play "sixties" music....(ghalija u ghalik Max!) during the awards ceremony. They came forward and wanted to offer their talent for free. From what I have been told they are pretty good.

That is really good news.  So I guess we'll be seeing you in this year's Oris national Big game Tournament.  On your willingness to form part of the committee, you are more than welcome.  I like to call it strength through diversity.  Speak soon.

Did I miss something...suddenly I am a band player, believe me when I was young mum had a piano and she tried to teach me but the only thing that was sure was that the cats used to gather outside when i played and then she got me a guitar and the shop ran out of strings..........so music for me is an only listening thingy ...... I might play an instrument but that is done in private.....

Hi all

My name is Rab which is short for Robert in Scotland.  I am from Edinburgh and I will be visiting Malta for a month this year from 20th of August to the 20th of September.  I am staying in a villa in Mellieha and would welcome any tips and advice you can give me on the fishing around Malta's coast.  I will be hiring a car when I get there so I can go anywhere on the Island.

I normally fly fish for trout and pike in the Lochs and have done a bit of salmon fishing.  During June and July I have about 4 or 5 sea fishing trips catching cod and mackerel.  If you copy this link into your browser can get info on my local water which is run as a syndicate.  http://www.portmore.co.uk  You can fish it 8 months of the year anytime you want which is handy.

Anyway I hope some of you local guys can give me some advice on where to go and what to use.  Also do you think it would be worthwhile if I brought my fly rod and gear with me or will I be better off with my spinning rod.

Thanks.

Now I started spinning from land, so i joined the forum to get a tip or two. Till now no good catches. But I've been going for only a week. I know that I need patience. Maybe the wind wasn't good or the time of year.

hey guys,

my name is pascal and i´m from germany.

as i live on malta now for about 2 month it is time (no, it´s overdue) to follow my instinct and also biggest passion - FISHING!

thanks to google, i found this forum which already provided me with lots of information during the last days in which i was reading... so now it´s time to introduce myself and i really hope to find like-minded people.

so far i don´t yet have a boat, but actually i´m planing to buy one in next year. for now it seems like i have to fish from shore and i hope to find some people willing to guide me a little for good spots to do some spinning. i have a outstanding experience in fresh water fishing (specialised on carp-hunting and spin fishing). fishing in saltwater is not a complete foreign thing for me, but i´m sure there are many new things to discover and learn and i´m really looking forward to it!

for introduction that´s it.

Always Tight Lines,

Pascal

Hi.  Im about to move to Mellieha next month and as both me - Jorgen - and my wife are keen anglers we are planning to do some fishing when ever we get the opportunity, We come from the very north of Sweden, and I have a background as angling guide and sport fishing journalist. I fished all over the world, but never in the water around Malta and is very curious about this. Shore fishing, boat fishing anything is interesting.  I will bring my fly rod - as I have seen that there are opportunities for this kind of fishing around Malta.
So to begin with I would be really happy to get some info on the shore fishing around Mellieha Bay, so I can start near where I live. So if anybody have some good tips on places, techniques, baits etc - I would be greatful.

Some of the shore fishing guys should be able to guide you as I'm sure there is some type of fishing that you can do in Mellieha Bay area, if not Cirkewwa is not too far away and neither are the cliffs.

I think you might be quite surprised with the results when sending a fly out to our fish as it's not something that they're used to :)

In exchange I can tell some stories from my fishing trips in Siberia, Kazakhstan, Amazons and so on......

Hello everyone, my name is Michael and I'm coming to Gozo for the first time in just over a week.

I was hoping to catch a Lampuki with my travel spinning rod from the shore but reading some of the stories lately I see it's all off shore work, or a fish market!

So I'll set my sights on something else, I'd like to say hello to you all and thank you for this site! If there are any other tips of where I could go spinning in Gozo what lures to use and what I might catch I would be very grateful

Great forum keep up the good work :))

look for rough terrain & deep waters and use 40-60 gram spinners.... you should be rewarded for your efforts. Or else, for lighter action use small minnows and poppers in bays and harbour.... C&R young catches please :)

Hey Robby thanks for the advice, will have 2 young kids with me so the harbour sounds good for them and if I can sneak off for a bit the rough terrain sounds good for me!

I've got loads more questions :) live bait availability on Gozo, float fishing and at what depths this time of year, has anyone had results using feathers/tinsel lures, fishing times - 5am - 7am seems popular but is it do with the tides or time of day in Gozo...

I'll have a better search on the forums and any more help would be great :)

Will C&R all youngsters of course thank you again

top water in harbors can be fruitful all during the day... i had hookups at 9am, 1pm and 4pm in summer so..... if you have 15 min to spare, try as you have nothing to lose.

feathers and tinsel may prove successful in Qbajjar, Gozo, but i never tried so can't vouch for them.

re:live bait ??? i don't know

i would recommend float fishing in the harbor for mullett.

enjoy your stay.

Hi
I'm Tony - English guy living in Malta for 18 years. I used to river fish in the UK but never tried sea fishing. I brought some equipment over with me but its for carp fishing so probably not really suitable for sea fishing.

I want to get back into fishing again (great excuse to get away from the wife ;) )

Where do I start? I don't have a boat or access to one so it will have to be from the shore/harbours etc.

Thanks

Hi to everyone here, I'm not exactly new to the club but I lost touch and my log in details and so had to start all over again. I'm 66 years old and from Sussex uk and was in Malta last may when the gales were almost blowing me off the rocks, never got much fishing done on that trip but the one planned for June is going to be different. I will be staying in Mellieha so anyone from that way is welcome to come and have a beer (or Two) with me. I'm not sure of the best places there to fish so I might head up towards the Gozo ferry terminal and give it a go there. Any local advice will be most welcome

Thanks

Joe

Hi All,

Will hopefully be visiting Malta again later in the Summer for the fourth or fifth time although this time as the kids are grown up and don't want to come on holiday with mum and dad any more I'll have a little bit more time on my hands  ;D

My names Marc and I do quite a bit of kayak fishing off of the North and South Cornish coasts (UK). Hope it's okay to be joining your forum as I want to do some research on kayak fishing around the Maltese islands in preparation of my holiday.

What a lovely pic, and welcome to the forum. I'm not sure if he's still there but see if you can get in touch with Mike at http://www.kayakmalta.com/welcome.html

he was operating Kayak rental and I know his personal kayak is rigged up for fishing and Paradise is a good location to be doing some fishing on the West coast which tends to be the most productive area.

I'll second the Cornish Pasties :)

Hello,

My name is Geert, I come from Belgium and I am a fly fisherman.
I fish rivers (trout, grayling, lakes (bow trout, rainbow trout) and since
about 3 years also salt (meaning the sea) for seabass and anything else
that will bite!

I make my own flies (its work but its also fun!).

I fished salt water recent in france and caught a few seabass, my first salt fish ever!

I am comming over to malta in August and would like to flyfish and meet other fly fishermen.
As its tradition under (fly)fisherman: anybody that would like to help me? Fish with me? Point me to the good locations?

regards and tight lines!

Geet

I am new to the world of fishing...But it's never to late.
I own only a rod with a reel at the moment and just clocked only
a few hours in fish and spent a lot of money, which eventually they ended
in the see. ( not the fishing rod. till now !!)
I am searching for some tips... just to get going as I think for sure I am
doing something wrong as night after night I go empty handed ( or Malta is out of fish. hope not)
It seems a good way to spend some good alone time and away from hectick never ending days.

Welcome to the forum. Have a read through the topics on shore fishing here http://maltafishingforum.com/talk/index.php/board,61.0.html

Perhaps you can also open a New Topic there and post what your current set up is, specifically what line you have and thickness, how you've rigged up, where you've been trying and what bait you have been using.

Hi,

I have just returned from a week on Gozo, if the fishing there is anything like Malta's there is no way there is a lack of fish. I was very lucky in as much as I had 38 Awrat over 1kg, and numerous other fish. I was using size 14 hooks on 3kg hook link (sorry dont know the diatmeter of the line, I just work in breaking strain) I was fishing below a float about 1 - 2 meters deep. I was using fresh shrimp, bread, dried worm and rubber worm (brought with me from the UK) I also spent time spinning, early morning, for baracuda. I had one take, two follows but did not manage too land one, maybe next time.

I hope this helps, if you want any more info, if you PM me I will try and help. Good luck, all the best and tight lines.

Prefer fishing in the late eve/night, but looking forward to start boat fishing.  In fact have already invested in some equipment.
Interested in bottom fishing, vertical jigging and trailing.

Hi everyone,

I've been registered to this forum for quite a while however I have not been an active angler for a couple of years due to studies and other work commitments. Now that I have more time in my hands I have just started to enjoy my fishing again.

I was introduced to 'bil-mitluq' (a pole with no float/ no sinkers)  technique as a kid and practically I have fished this way 90% of my time. I have always used hniex tal imperjal (unfortunately this is rather expensive) and in some cases ckal after sunset till the early hours of the morning. I have caught some nice Sargi/Kahli and some occasional Gilthead (Awrata) along the years from the harbour area but I am by no means an expert like some of the guys on this forum  :), the limited knowledge I have I have learned through experience.

Lately I've been interested in trying out new techniques and new types of bait and I must say that this forum is a gold mine of information, so well done to every contributor! I am willing to try out some spinning and also set up a running float rig and see how it goes. I am a complete newbie in this type of fishing so will see how it goes :)

Carl.

hi all, just joined this forum - hoping it will make a difference to my fishing... i know very little about this, but have been trolling off the end of my boat for more than a year and caught only two fish - a smallish tuna and a good sized mackerel. i also like to take my kids fishing but they dont like to go out on the boat, so we just do it from shore.

Anyway, as my nickname suggests, I am more of a friend to the fish, than their mortal enemy... but any help with getting to know how to catch a few more would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
I now live in mellieha after relocating from the U.K with my family, back there i was very much into carp angling as a friend owned a gravel pit in france.
Since being here i have been out on a few charter trips trolling for tuna, with chris through Aquatica amongst others.
i have ordered from the usa a couple of  daiwa  sealine heavy trolling rods and shimano TLD 25`s for trolling work, and was thinking 20/40 lb class 7 footers and medium duty shimano level winds for jigging/light bottom fishing to get next?.
What i would really be interested in is maybe a fuel/boat share with any of the members on here,i would like to go out maybe once or twice a fortnight, for some trolling/wreck/ bottom fishing to learn the ropes and gain experience here in malta as looking to get my own boat in the next year. i am available most any day of the week and require only a day or two`s notice so could make up the numbers or even just go out for a couple of hours pleasure fishing, have own tranport so no worries there, just really want a bit better cost effective way of getting out on the sea really ;)
please feel free to pm me
regards Darren

Last Saturday we went fishing and caught 27 vopi. We had a great time and were impressed that by 1.30am we caught even more than earlier in the evening. We are new to fishing so we went fishing for vopi. A fisherman there told me that shops nowadays have a bait that looks like a straw and doesnt smell like shrimp does. I am not very keen on the smell :) Do you know what it is called and where one can find it please?

Thanks

Hi Fellow anglers.
My name is Phil my wife is Morgan we will be visiting you for a short period flying in fron the 7th March 2013.
We are a mature couple in our late 50s.
My wife has been planning all sorts of things like snorkelling horse riding etc so I need to get my bit in before she books the whole seven days solid.
We will be staying  in Sliema so information relating to angling in the area would be appreciated as in what, how and when.
My main experience is in shore fishing for bass and may bring a telescopic beach caster and possibly a short spinning rod.
Looking forward as this will be our first holiday for many years.
Finally happy new year to you all.

The number of members in the forum is growing on a daily basis, so it would be beneficial to all if new members post a small introduction so that everyone can get an idea on what they are interested in, where they are from etc.

The introduction might include:

  • Your home country
  • Your fishing style - What types of fishing you're interested in
  • If you have a boat, some details about it and where you are moored
  • A
  • How you came across the forum (Word of mouth/a friend, google etc)

Not everyone likes to fill out their member profile so replying to this topic will help in many ways.

Hello all,

I am new to this forum. Been diving moslty on the Adriatic islands. In early May I plan a visit to Malta. As a devoted spearo I'd like to take my gear with me. I've been searching the net, the medfish forum for info with respect to regulation for foreigners, boat rentals... I got inconsistent information so I'm not sure whether it's possible for a foreigner to bring along his gear and do the spearfishing. It would be of great help to me if I could get some 1st-hand advice on where to look for. Also if anyone needs a reliable spearo buddy I believe I can deliver it: When hunting alone I rarely go bellow 25m, my max freedive is 41m.

Best Regards, Martin

Welcome to the forum Martin, there might be a couple of people here who could help you. I don't think you'll have problems bringing over your gear personally, but someone else might be able to give you a better reply than my assumption.

This time of year the forum seems to be a bit less busy, probably due to people reducing their sea time no thanks to the weather. I would check back in the future for a reply if I were you.

Hi everyone,

I'm from Malta.
I usually go deep line fishing and trolling with my grandfather and my cousin during the Summer holidays on
his Kajjik. I joined this forum to learn new techniques and tips and I found out about this forum through Google.

Regards,

Hi everybody , I am Louis from Victoria Gozo. I used to own a boat quite a long time ago, and now I decided to buy a marina open boat built here in Gozo powered by a 20hp mariner. The marina is similar to the bahri and more or less the same size.  I would like to know if one needs an insurance for this type of boat. I was asked to produce an insurance by tm which insurance is something over 70 euros. Are insurances becoming mandatory now as I know many small boat owners who don't pay an insurance yet. Thanks for your patience, as maybe I should not have posted this kind of message here..... sorry,, but this is my first post.

Thanks

Louis

Hello,
My name is Joachim and I live in Berlin/Germany. I am a fly fisher. My club is the Fario eV ( http://www.farioev.de ). Feel free to take a look at, we also have an english Version.
I registred to this forum because I am on vacation by end of August. And the location where I will stay is Gozo, Xlendi bay. Hopefully I can get some informations on this way where and how to fish. My favorite is to fish the shore by wading. We do a lot of this at home. For me its funny too to flyfish from a boat. Is there any guiding around gozo for this type of fishing?
Maybe you have a flyfishing club on Malta or Gozo so we can have an exchange of ideas and share some informations. Or only having a beer and telling lies each other about our best catches  ;) ;D

Thank you in advance and tight lines

Hi Joachim, and welcome to the forum.  Maybe you're lucky and and find someone to take you out on a boat and do some fl fishing for dorado, (in Maltese, Lampuki)....they usually are much closer to shore in Gozo, especially around the Marsalforn Area (Qwabar).  Lampuki will take anything, fly, plastic lure, live or dead bait...soft lure, hard lure, anything.

Hi Gaffer!
Thank you for that very fast reply!
That sounds nice. Are there any restrictions for fishing? I practice catch and release. Have you heard about a flyfishing club on Malta?

There are no restrictions on rod/shore fishing that I am aware of.  You are very welcome to practice catch & release.  A number of responsible anglers here in Malta do practice that technique too.  I am also not aware of any flyfishing club in Malta.  there is an active spinning club, and all fishing clubs have a number of 'spinners'as members.

Hello,
My name is Robert Dunn from Scotland, Will be in Malta for three weeks over Christmas and new year and would like to do some rod and line fishing from the shore. At home I fish mainly from the west coast beaches and the sea lochs near my home in Argyll. I am retired and also play a little golf and paint (daub) a bit. Found the forum through a google search when it was decided to spend the holiday period in Malta. Hoping to get some help on the do's and don'ts of fishing on the island, so prepare for what might seem some obvious questions.
Robert

Half of my family is greek, but I was born in Malta, I'm nearly 13 years old, and I've been
fishing since I was about 4.  I came across this forum while searching for some tips online.

Hello, my name is Mario and I'm 30.
I practise light rock fishing from shore, which is a popular fishing technique in Japan.  Also I have my spinning rod because sometimes I like fighting big catches.  I always do catch and release.  I am not yet in Malta and I don't know how the fishing is like in there, so if somebuddy wants to meet up and share his spot it will be welcomed.

I'm from Spain but I'm moving to Sliema In 2 weeks.

Hi folks, my name is Paul Meredith, i am 65 yrs old and live in Falmouth Uk.
I am an avid fisherman and enjoy any and all types of fishing. I  fished from the shore just outside the Portamaso marina on my visit last year and caught  a lot of fish, mainly small bream and wrasse but did lose what I think was a barracuda ( the highlight of my holiday)
at first light on a red/white 7cm plug.
I'm coming over again this year for the month of October and can't wait to expand  and build on the foundation of knowledge of the fishing that I  learnt last year.
For someone of my age, it's fascinating to fish for different species to my normal bass, salmon and trout, and I can't wait !!!
I'm hoping to gleen lots of info from your forum.
Anyone with a boat in that area who would like some company one day (more than happy to pay for any fuel costs) I'd love a day out !!!
Regards,
Paul

Hi all,

i've been reading in this forum (google was my friend) for a while now and i've been in that lovely coutry of yours a few times. Time to introduce myself:

I'm a 37 year old from Germany, currently living in Thuringia. Like i said i've been to Malta a few times and i love it. This year I planned to fish a bit. I allways wanted to do that but it never happend.
I'm into shore fishing (CnR) with simple spoons (imo cheap but effective). The rest of the gear i will use is just like a "travelling gear", small telescopic rod (has to fit in the suitecase). So i don't expect to make a big catch (or any catch at all??). Just relaxing and watering the bait.
Like always i'll stay in the Cerviola Hotel Marsascala (really nice people) for bed n breakfast.

I'll be there from the 14th of may. So if you see a guy trying his luck between Zonqor and Munxar it might be me, if it looks like the guy doesn't know what he is doing it's definitely me, feel free to say hi (i might have beer with me as well).

Thight lines!

Hi i am going to malta for the first time mid july in the north east area of mellieha and would love to try my hand at fishing from the rocks if possible, i am just taking my telescopic rod and reel an assortment of lures and float rigs, can anyone suggest the best time of day to fish and what bait attracts good eating fish? Or is it a better idea to book a place on a chartered boat to fish for specific species? I dont want to travel too far so the nearest to fhe mellieha bay resort, our appartment is on the coast above the rocky sea shore, and also baitwise, is it best to buy fresh bait, shrimps, sandeels etc? Or go for rubber lures? Cheers

Hi,
I have started my fishing in the Adriatic Sea, which was decades ago, very little was done with artificial bait those days.
Since I live in Belgium, I (re)started fishing exclusively with artificial baits, always C&R, mainly targeting pike and perch,
but definitely not minding occasional zander and especially asp.
I did no fishing with artificial baits from shore, as I would like to try, so any tips are helpful.
Tight lines :)
