Does the HDS5 take fishing charts or just navigation charts?

If you had to choose would you go;

FURUNO GP1650WF

Lowrance LMS-527

Raymarine A Series

Love to hear peoples choice

As I said, check out the 'A' Series from Raymarine.  They come in 3 sizes and formats.  Either as a GPS chart plotter or fishfinder combo equipped with HD digital fishfinder capabilities.  With the A70, you get pre loaded charts and an internal GPS antenna.  Go to RLR, ask for Matthew - Display your forum membership card, and you'll get a discount.  Else, PM either me or Skip, and we'll make sure you get a discount.

moonwalker where do u get fishing charts???

shanook

joe how dep would the raymarine see with 600w transducer as with my lowrance i saw 800mtrs and the bottom was crystal clear, I was doing 6 knots searching the bottom contours........i forgot to take a screen shot grrrrrrrrrrrr

The_Gaffer

Can't answer that question Tony, as I am not aware how deep this particular fishfinder can go too.  What I do know is that I use a Furuno 620 coupled to an Airmar B477VL 600w transducer and the best reading I got so far was 635m.

Which lowrance are you referring to?

hds5 or hdsx5 as one of the above is finder and gps

The Garmin 520S has Nav and fishing charts. Fishing charts give much more detail although they still lack accuracy (same as nav charts).

i have the garmin 182 its 10yearsold now. It gives practically the same detail as the lowrance one with contours and depth markings. i have the atlantic blue chart for computer and its the same as the gps. is that the fishing chart or is there something else

Moonwalker

No fishing charts are something else. You get countours every 10m not every 100m as on Nav charts. They cant be opened on Mapsource afaik.

Moonwalker

No idea maybe someone else knows more.

The Garmin G2 charts are what Moonwalker is referring to, available only in preprogrammed cards for newer garmin models. Rumors are that a release on cd is in the works but it is only a rumour. Read more about it here.

Hey, what part of "Bring your own Beer" didn't you understand ?

Moonwalker

Thanks guido - that explains better. What is needed is a new Mapsource that can read directly from SD card.
So back to my question - Can the HDS5 read G2 charts?

Yes what we need is a version of mapsource that can read the g2 charts from sd card.
No G2 charts work only on compatible garmin units.

Navionics Platinum charts are purported to have detailed bathymetry charts as well as navigation charts. These charts are compatible with certain raymarine and Lowrance units to name a few.

UPDATE to my post above.

Apparently the navionics detailed charts are only available for U.S.A. waters so far.
