how does a short gun differ from a long one? i read that you use a short gun for low visibility and a long gun for high visibility, besides that what are the other reasons you may choose a type of gun and discard another?

according the visibility one need to use different lenghts. Cannot use a 105cm where doing an aspetto and finding the fish 1mtr from you and cannot turn the gun.So in that case we use a 75cm. On the other side fish use to keep at a certain distance with good visiblity so cannot use a 75 where the range is much smaller and keeping trying to come closer.

The mass of the gun makes a difference on the type of shoots you want (fast and penatration). Trigger and spear alignment also make a good rule. As for the head new versions of spearguns are making them open due to less noise, more manuvrability and can use sharkfin spears. Also personally I like dynema wishbones as I see it with smootehr shoot and does not scraches the gun.

Short guns are more appropriate for shooting fish in their nests, but this practice is invasive.
