Hi guys, had a nice read on most of the posts, it's a nice forum and it sure helps alot

keep it up!

I practice mostly rock fishing and would love to know if anyone has a way how to land in a nice fish that is floating on the water after a 15 minutes tug of war ! It's the second time I lost a pretty deceant fish after taking him all the up from the bottom. As soon as i lifted him from the sea bed the hook came off ( I belive he was hooked from his upper lip and it tore off) I'm about 15 mtrs above.

Any help would be appreciated

umm how about tying a keepnet to a rope and pulling it in that way ?

Another friend suggested a sort of claw made of 3 big hooks and ur supposed to hook it with ur main line, didnt really explain it well but he's supposed to make me 1, will tell u how it goes.

yeah i imagine it would work, but i guess that it would butcher up and ruin a nice fish eh, especially if you're going to release it.

I practise catch and release but if it's a fish that requires so much stunts to land him I guess it would be a fish that should go home, at least to proove ur wife that we truly go fishing not somewhere else

lol yeah. i do keep nice specimens as well, especially since my dad loves fish. however , piercing it with a hook would also make a nice fillet look a bit "roughed up" . but i guess if presentation on the table isnt important, do anything you can in order to get the fish up in one piece eh ! (also as humanely as possible) . there has been nice weather lately, should be good for fishing. pity i'm too busy to go this week !

Idd there is nice weather, I'll go spend a couple of hours on Sunday, altough it's majistral, never had much luck with that kind of wind!

yeah, that and Tramuntana are the worst i think. Lbic isnt too great either. what do you think is the best wind for fishing ?

Well I'm not an old experianced fisherman but for the spots I fish in, i find Grigal is my best friend! but as i said I have no clue as to y some winds feel better than others.

. it's because during some winds the fish come in to feed , while with other winds , they go offshore. but i dont know which winds exactly. i just know the "bad" winds so to speak.

Kempy - those are the names of winds in maltese . let me translate : Tramuntana = North, Grigal = North East , Lvant = East , Xlokk = South East , Nofsinhar = South , Lbic = South West , Punent = West , Majjistrall North West.

I'm pretty sure that these are accurate, but then again, I could be wrong. However ,it;s good to know them because most old maltese fishermen use only the maltese names , so it could be useful to know them since you might stumble across a few tips about what winds to fish in ! Good Luck !

Well i belive yesterday was majjistral and cought half a dozen pagell and a sargu apart from the endless hordes of serran, pagell where pretty small, the sargu was quite deceant.

On the bright side the weather was really nice and enjoyed myself regardless of the catch!
