Hey Guys,

Was thinking of servicing my Shimano exage spinning reel in the next few days. I was thinking of going to the local agent. What are your opinions / experiences on the 'servicing service' :D offered by the local shimano agent? (What I mean is do they do a good job or are they  lousy and lose parts or change parts which need not be changed etc...?). Also if possible could someone give me an indication of the price and duration.

That was the same answer I received from one of Malta's top notch spinners! The prob is that  I m having trouble with my drag so I think its best if I have it checked out. According to Martin it just a problem with a  loose drag washer but since the reel was rather expensive for my budget and I am no expert I wouldn't like to mingle about with one of the most imp tools of my life  ::)! So my conclusion is to leave in in the hands of the supposedly experts and pray that all comes well!

if u are mechanically minded or meticulous in ur work then it is a good idea to open it urself and have a look inside, it is quite satisfying to do ur own servicing. Also once u know how, u do it every year, taking it apart cleaning it a. Usually there is nothing out of this world in servicing a reel. If u run in trouble then take it to the agent to fix ur mess. Never opened a shimano so becareful there might be springs inside........Good luck

i/m telling you to do it yourself because they either don't do it or use bad greasing material

if you have an expensive reel, you should have the plan structure of the reel. that is essential, so is a GOOD philips screw driver and a photo camera recording each process.

Study the plan structure of the reel attentively
the first time take your time and do things slowly-from start to finish don't stop in the middle the hard part is to remount everything back in their proper positions.-particularly the drag system

to note you have to buy some proper grease and oil from the internet, for an excellent work. they come with a needle too for small areas that can be problematic to grease

@ shanook  and Granitu - 10x

A member of this forum offered to show me how to service a spinning reel so i ll  be mentored on my first service which is much better. I really liked the idea by Granitu to take photos of every stage and all the parts. I remember when I was a kid I used to disassemble all my toys and when I used to come to reassemble them I really used to get frustrated because I  would have forgotten the exact assembly! A toy is one thing but a shimano reel is a different story! so its better if I take some precautions but as you said shanook If I run in trouble then I can take it to the agent to fix my mess!

i use that procedure and never had problems. the first time i take it easy and study the plan well in exceptional detail. with a shimano you won't have problems believe me their plans are extremely detailed

like shanook said you can do it, and Granitu's advice follow the exploded view take photos if you're lucky try you tube or google ( shimano name** + repair).

from experience allocate a table for this job, place a white paper as repair mat under the reel.
see that you have the right tools (ronson tools have excellent tools at a very reasonable price even Ta'bormla mosta can supply you with tools and oil & grease from mitchell or abu garciaat a resonable price).

good luck you can do it and if you have any problems i'm ready to help via this forum

Guide to cleaning a Fishing Reel
There is no worse feeling than to have a big fish hooked, to be enjoying the fight of reeling it in, then
having your equipment fail and the fish getting away.

Remove spool wash and lubricate moving parts.

Remove handle and plate and lubricate internals.

Sometimes equipment failure cannot be helped, but with good maintenance you?ll be confident that any failure it may have could not have been prevented.

By keeping your fishing reel clean, it will work smoother and last longer. This is a basic how to on cleaning and maintaining fishing reels.

Find a clean flat hard surface such as a bench top to clean your reel on. Laying down a clean white sheet over the bench can make finding small parts easier.

Begin by wiping the outside of the reel over with a moist soapy rag, this will remove any of the contaminants such as oils and salts.Remove the spool and wash it and underneath with mild soapy water.

Carefully remove the winding handle; this is usually done by unscrewing the nut on the opposite side of the reel. Take the handle out and carefully remove the side plate with a small screw driver. You will be able to inspect all of the gears inside and add special fishing reel grease onto the gears. Each year you should clean out the old grease and lubricate the internals with fresh grease.

Using fishing reel oil, lubricate any external moving parts such as the bail and anti reverse lever.

Make sure you clean your gear after each trip to keep it in perfect working order and extend its life for many more fishing trips.
