Back in 1909 a chap invented spiral wrapped rods. Spinning rods have the reels and guides mounted underneath and all line pressure is downwards facing. Conventional rods have the reel and guides on top and when a rod bends alot the line can touch in several places. In addition to this due to the way the blanks transmit torsion, the rod tends to want to twist left or right.

A spiral wrapped rod starts off in the conventional way and then spirals 180 degress by the third or fourth guide to take the line and guides underneath the rod as per spinning rods. This is said to provide a superior rod without the twist effect.
