After a day out fishing, its important to make sure you rinse your reels in fresh water to maintain their life span. Please note DO NOT use any kind of detergent such as Hi-Foam/Lux Liquid as the chemicals in them can break down the oil used to lubricate the reel and the grease used inside.

If in doubt rinse, soak over night in fresh water, rinse again and ideally use compressed air to dry and finally wipe with a clean cloth. This is the best method without using a specialist product, but fresh water will still not remove all the salt.

One new product out on the market, though I haven't seen it locally is Salt-X which is biodegradeable and won't harm your reel and its non toxic too! It supposed to remove 100% salt deposits.

After the rinse process, make sure you follow the manufacturers recommended guidelines for oiling your reel using reel oil usually provided with the reel. Correct oiling interval and location is very important.

In general try and get your reel serviced every two years by a professional.

Hey SKIP,

I very much doubt people actually do this. Of course it all makes sense, but I reckon its too much of a hassle for most. Checked out the Salt-X and that looks really neats, certainly makes it much less hassle and the way to go.

Good point about the oiling

SO chappies out there,

if i have a jammed reel, without being the reel breakdown specialist am i able to do something about it or do i have to send it abroad to get it sorted. (okuma is the make).

Any thoughts or any clever chaps who can properly dismantle a reel and fix it?

Dont know about you guys but the rods & reels i fish with i clean & rinse straight away as soon as i get back home.It can seem a bit of a chore sometimes but its the only way you will get any kind of decent life-span out of your gear.
Also personally speaking once i get used to the feel of a good rod & reel it becomes so comfortable and familiar to use it seems a shame (not mention a waste of money:-tackle 'aint cheap!) not to take care of it and get the most out of it!!
