Hi,

Looking for a boat between 17 and 22 foot, ideally Outboard powered. Would also consider something like a Kaptan with diesels etc. Primary use - Fishing!

Max budget Lm5,000

If anyone knows of anything, please let me know.

Thanks,

Hi skip. there seems to be something in that region under Di-ve classified (Marine) and also under Maltapark.com (Marine). There is a "Rascala FM17" and an "open 510 for sure". You may wish to check them out!
I'd rather be fishing.....

Thanks Benri, completely forgot to look at Maltapark and Di-ve. Have found around 4 potential boats that I will go around to see all within my budget. Many thanks for the pointers

Skip, the subject of the ideal boat for a particular purpose is an extremely interesting one and one which requires quite some thought before the actual purchase is made.

I'ld also take into consideration the type of fishing that you intend doing in order to decide on the type of boat which would be ideal for you:

An open boat is good fun in  the hot & calm summer months. However if you intend using it throughout the year (i.e. also in the colder windier months / in the periods when the weather is more unpredictable and can easily pick up a good chop / or for some serious offshore fishing including alungi / lampuki), I'ld put a priority on 2 further things:
1 Having a boat which will offer better protection from the elements - i.e. some sort of cabin, or at least as I've seen on some open sport-fishers some sort of traditional style kabuz.
2 Having some form of auxiliary power either in the form of a twin engine boat (but these tend to consume more fuel & not necessarily be faster due to the increased weight) or in the form of a smaller spare engine/outboard.

Eg. recently I came across an advert (I believe it was on the local Boats & Yachting magazine) for a Coronet 21ft with a main big diesel engine  and another smaller inboard diesel  engine with a folding propeller which can be left open with minimal drag when not in use or I guess used for fishing instead of the bigger engine for lower fuel consumptionas well as in case of main engine failure. I wonder whether anyone here owns/owned something similar & can share his experience.

With Lm5000 (or slighlty more) you can buy a brand new 17 footer italian classy boat with a 60hp ETEC (Which are the best outboards for trolling in my opinion). If I had to buy anthing in that budget, thats what I would go for at the moment. Besides, a brand new motor is many headaches less.

I think it would be closer to Lm7000 imma for that kind of set up and unfortunately 5K is really my top top budget, in fact ideally less. It would be nice to go brand new of course, as you say far less headaches.

As to the issue of element protection, Jonathan is right, having a cabin, hard top or some kind of structure is ideal but on smaller boats it tends to add a lot to the weight meaning more power and more fuel consumption plus higher initial cost of purchase. Auxillary power definately, I wouldnt go offshore without it even though modern outboards are very reliable.
