Dear All,

I've been looking at the Eden 18 manufactured by Marinello Boats in Italy and imported locally by Hitec Marine. Some of the features of this boat are a high freeboard, offset to the right steering console with windscreen, recessed outboard mounting location, and fairly lightweight without compromising strength.

The base boat including some frilly bits is around Lm 4,700 incl VAT

Recommended Outboard 85-115hp: Yamaha 85 Lm 2157 incl VAT, Yamaha 90 Auto Lube Lm 2480, Yamaha 115 4-stroke Lm 3705

Full suspension trailer, galvanized, made in Italy Lm 796
Canopy and Pipes Lm 220

So basically you are looking at Lm7,875 with an 85hp including the trailer and canopy which from the research I've done is about as competitive as you're going to get for an 18 foot new boat.

Anyone been out on one of these?

I've never been on one but it looks good and sturdy. Once you're at it you might also take a look at http://www.petecraft.com and http://www.buccaneerboatsltd.com unless of course you insist on foreign manufactured
I'd rather be fishing.....

85hp for an 18ft boat i think is a bit small. i have never been on one of them but for an 18ft boat the recomended engine power should be more than 115hp if they are really good. there are 15ft kaptan that have 115 4-stroke outbaords so an 18ft boat should take more power than a 15ft boat. check about the motor because from this year they aren t allowed to sell any 2-stroke outboards.

Indeed 85hp appears to be small, however I have checked against several other boats and they are all in a similar range:

Petecraft FF17, 40-115hp
Bucanneer 16.6, 55-115hp
Rascala FM17, 90-130hp
Ranieri 17, Max 85hp
Ranieri 19, Max 140hp

There is also the consideration that 2 strokes weight alot less than four strokes so you need less hp to get the equivalent power to weight ratio.

Yamaha 85 2 Stroke Dry Weight 120kgs, Yamaha 90 4 Stroke Dry Weight 170kgs!!

I was reading that in terms of hull design, the more efficient the hull the less power require to propel the boat, and this is also linked to the overall weight of the boat as well.

Just for reference nearly all of these boats are CE design category C

C: Designed for voyages in coastal waters, large bays, estuaries, lakes and rivers where conditions up to, and including, wind force6 and significant wave heights up to, and including, 2meters  may be experienced.

In comparison

B: Designed for offshore voyages where conditions up to, andincluding, wind force 8 and significant wave heights up to, and including, 4m may be experienced

I cant see any speedboat being out in a Force 8 so there we can establish that the majority of boats we would use are a Category C/D

Concerning the sale of two stroke outboard, if they were tax paid by a distributor by 01/01/07 they can continue to sell them in the EU, however stock is rapidly running out and prices are going up as these two stroke outboards are in heavy demand due to their power/weight/price advantages. Gasan apparently just got stock (dont know from where!) of Yamaha 85AET (non autolube) and 90 AETOL (Autolube) with the prices listed above. As you can see as soon as you go 4 stroke there's a huge jump.

Evinrude ETECs can be sold even though they are 2-strokes as they meet EU 2006 emission standards for outboards.

I've tried to contact Petecraft on at least two occasions by email and never get a response which is disappointing.

Concerning the Eden 18, the only way to be sure would be to take the boat out for a sea trial with four people on board and a decent amount of fuel and see how she performs. Cruise speed/rpm, max speed/rpm and approx acceleration etc.

I had a palipitation by Jupiter of Mosta for over 9years and it had a 90hp two stroke engine which was the recomended hp belive me it was enough, got caught many times in force 6 winds, top speed was 45 knots, petrol was not a issue as it used to plain very easily, my friend had same boat with 115hp on it and could not keep up with me so what you gain on hp u lose in weight and thus u gain in speed and the fater you plain the boat the less it will use (petrol) Those Marinello boats look like the ideal boats for Malta both for Leisure and for fishing.

i think that a bigger engine make the difference only when the baot is a bit loaded

Which is usually the case with Fishing! Rods, gear, Ice Boxes, all those fish!! Full Fuel, hmmm I would have to say that a 115hp 2 stroke would always be better than an 85hp!

I might be testing one out with an 85 so will let you know the results.

i wouldn t buy a big 2-stroke not very economical with these prices for fuel. dont forget that from 1st of april the fuel price is going to get revised again. i would go for an optimax cheaper than 4-stroke and the same economy. there is a big difference between big 2-stroke an 4-stroke in fuel economy. my friend has a chaudron 24ft with 225 2-stroke E.F.I and his friendhas same boat but with 250 4-stroke. they do same trips during weekend. the 2-stroke spends LM50 the 4-stroke LM25. but the 2-stroke has more top speed

exactly what i was saying on 4 stroke you sepnd more on buying then you save when using it, my 200 hp mercury is very fast but not econoical at all and will try to sell it and buy a four stroke next year. I think i am underpowered with 200hp as my boat is heavy (24ft Rascala)

Outboards are certainly damn expensive!! Especially the big ones. Indeed the Mercury Optimax or Evinrude ETECs are both 2 strokes that meet EU2006 standards and give you similar fuel economy to a 4 stroke but a better hole shot.

Visa, try and test out a 200hp ETEC or Optimax.

Will do before i change as have to check all options open
but as i said next to my boat on the pontoon there is a guy with a four stroke 200hp and its ever so silent that i am shy to start my motor next to him and he says he fills up with fifty Lm to my lm150 with the same hours of running but his boat is a lightweigh bombardier

We run a 17 foot ranieri boat with a 50hp 4 stroke Honda. Its fine with 3 people, plains well with speeds up to 30 knots.  However it doesn't plain well with 4 people on board.
