this weekend we will be lure fishing for Barracuda in the early saturday hours 5.00am - 7.00am and then off for in port fishing in Birzebbuga for bream.....win it we're gonna win it!!!!!!!!!!!

no luck with barracudas early morning hours, but inport fishing for pagell turned out quite thrilling

We landed near 10kgs of nice sized breams (range 300gms each)

hey guys going night fishing today

can anyone suggest any good places ? I live in Pieta and my friends live in sliema and marsa , so any place close to any of those areas would be great . last week we went night fishing in sliema in front of burger king . only caught 1 sparlu and 1 xirghien though

hi sergio
when you go night fishing you are targeting some very particular fish
one of my favorite places in that area is ta xbiex between black pearl and the bocci club
the set up i recommend is one beach caster with a pater noster rig and a carbon ledgering rod with very fine line (14-18 ) line riged up with a running lead hook size 1-4 worm hooks preferebly red and rear barbed
as bait i use king rag worm (hanex tal imperjal) gandofli with a cracked shell razor fish small squid whole and crabs
the fish you will be targeting are large bottom dwellers like sargi and awrat (i caught a 5kg wild awrata from there at 3 am after a storm on a gandofla 10mts from the shore)
when rigging shellfish you crack one side open and insert the hook then tie the shells together using nylon or fishing elastic

at this time of year you will find sawrell ta limperjal roaming ports and bays the best baits are fresh tunnagg or any oyher bloody fish. these fish come in in the evening around 6pm and come back in the morning around 5 am

thanks a lot simon. i actually live in pieta so going near black pearl is only about 20 mins walk ! i will surely give it a go as fishing in sliema last night was NOT successful hehe , we spent more money on buying king ragworm which was lm 6 ! . i hope my 3m shakespeare spinning rod is adequate though coz i dont have the money to buy a carbon ledgering rod !! hehe

Night fishing in Summer is really nice. When I was a student I used to roam in all corners of the ports looking for a descent spot. I can say that I tired them all since I fished 3-4 times a week for six months. If you are patient you will surely land a nice fish.

The best expiriences me and a firend had was fishing for sawrell (atlantic horse mackarel) with live bait during the night. When you see the small lacci (Allis shad) grouping together under a lit spot it means you found a right spot. You have to net some bait and keep it alive in a small bucket. A fixed weghted waggler (8-12) + (2-4), and a long fine .12 mm branch of 2 metres will do. The waggler has to take a 4mm starlight. We sometimes caught record sawrell (atlantic horse mackarel) of 500 grms.

When the fish are feeding on the shads it will not be easy to catch them on some other bait. Apart from feeding the fish have fun chasing smaller fish and usually there is abundancy. You can always try the king ragworm but I doubt you will catch them while chasing the shads.

hey angler , what do u mean when u say (8-12) + (2-4) ( ive never used weighted waggler before ) i just bought one 8g but what's the (2-4) mean ?

night fishing.....i used to fish the sampei way.

lol....some time ago in BBUGIA me and a friend used to get water bottles (empty) tie some 10mts of line and attach with a size 4 hook. Hook a small living vopa and off you go. We used to spread out from 5 to 10.

we caught nice sawrell, spnott and even barracuda. All during the night from the freeport area, under light from the tower cranes.

Weighted wagglers do not always take the full weight in the float. Some wagglers divide the weight. Part of the weight goes in the float but then you can still add some weight on the line. This is useful when you need to reach certain depths. If you cannot add some split shots on the line it means that the bait will go down very slowly and if you have strong currents it will never reach the desired depth. So say (8+2) means that the waggler itself weighs 8 grams but then you can add another 2 grams on the line to make the bait go down faster. This is also useful while throwing because the float and the line do not get tangled since you have some weight on the line.

Definetely, that is very useful when fishing in very difficult shallow waters not deeper that 4 metres. I usually use the waggler in a fixed position. The best is a very fine 5m rod which can take a max of 10-15 grams. I use a branch of 4.5 metres and then just hook the bait. After you cast you reel in very very slowly. The bait would move on the seabed and there you have 100% sensitivity. This system is also very good for mullet but you would need a catapult to feed and fresh slice bread to use as bait.
