i saw a VHF from ebay uk is it good for malta or are there different frequencies abroad

If it's a European model it's fine, if it's got US channels and you do as you're supposed to (ie. register it with MCA) you will have issues as they won't allow you to use it.

Probably they tell you to remove the US channels.

I would say unless you are going to buy a vhf from the US and you will be saving quite a substantial ammount i wouldn't bother as it is too much hasstle to get it registered. I have expirianced it last year & I gave it to friend of mine as he needed one more then I did for the distance he was going out. I took him 3 days befor he finally got it registered. Unless you try & check from Italy see below just an example.
