My friend that reel is a winch, if your ready to spend about 900Euros or more on a reel for fishing from land im sure it's good but you dont need it for that.

Thanks for the info re poppers Ganni. I will buy a few.

I warrant  most of your comments, but, there are some things which personally I do not quite agree with.

'You need at least 10kg of drag' - This is suitable if you're chasing fish in excess of 30kg. 5kg of drag would land most of the common fish around our island i.e. albacore, denci, kubrit, amberjacks etc with ease. 5kg of drag would be suitable for fish up to 15 - 20kg. With less than 4kg of drag, I landed 14kg tunnies in few minutes.

My friend's nexave prooved sucessful endless times last seasonfor fish under 15kg.

It is true that the gears and body of the nexave are inferior to those from the S / SR range, but I think it would be good for beginers who are on a tight budget.

One final note, I think that 50LB braid on a spheros 8000FA might be too much. My 3 light medium jigging reels i.e. Stradic 8000FI, Navi 8000PG and spheros 8000FA are all spooled with 30lb and 40lb braid which never failed!

both mr fish and angler centre sell poppers.

About the nexave, i assure you that it isn't suitable for jigging.  the shaft and the internal mechanism is not strong enough, to take all that load. and the max drag is about 6kg, you need at least 10kg.  its not a big fish that tests a reel but the constant jerking action with a 200g jig or more.  spinning is one thing and jigging is another mate.

and about the spehros i think a 8000 model will do the job skip and thats medium jigging. with a 14000 model ur in heavy jigging. a 4000-6000 reel is a reel for light jigging.  the 8000 model has 12kg of max drag and filled with a 50lbs dyneema it will do the job with a lighter load in ur hand.

 ;)

Shimano's reels are all good. If one wants to give jigging a try, for a start, any of shimano's P3 range (like the nexave) from 6000 to 10000 but excluding their entry model hyperloop, should be fine, especially if you are after fish less than 10kg.

The spheros however is a much superior reel than any of shimano's P3s. Features like the aluminium frame and the direct drive mechanism are important as they make the reel feel robust and more suitable for the job. Anyway, this is just my advice.

Do you know of anyone selling poppers locally?

Cheers!

Skip, I have the Nexave 10000FB, it's a very hard worker and it's good for jigging i have used it and it's done great!, and i assure you if it wasnt a good reel it wouldnt be alive anymore with me since i always spin with 50-90Gramms spinners and it takes a beating but it hasnt let me down. And it has a very reasonable price  ;)

Yep that was me!! Still haven't gotten around to purchasing a spinning reel for popping and maybe some light jigging. I still have my eye on the 14000FB as your reel is above my budget!!

Thanks buddy,

I got so mad about this reel that I bought another of the previous model (JDM FA) few weeks later.

Are you the same person you were asking about how to change the drag washes in a spheros 14000FA on 360tuna? If you are, I posted a few comments which may help you.
