From what I am reeding I am nearly confirming that it come with some ship or cruise liner since our port is surely not a reef and the bottom is surely not like the habitat this fish likes to live in.It would have stayed in other areas more cleaner and with nicer sea bed.

This is a reply I got from Profs. PJ. Schembri:

Dear Sir,

Further to my message below,I've now had a chance to examine the photograph of the alien fish closely and confirm that it is indeed Oplegnathus fasciatus. There are some small colour differences from photographs of specimens of this species that I have viewed but these are very minor. This fish belongs to the family Oplegnathidae - the Knifejaws and has several common names: Barred Knifejaw, Rock Bream, Striped Beakerch, Parrotfish, etc.

Its main area of distribution is the Pacific in the region of Korea, Japan, Taiwan and Hawaii. It lives close to the bottom on coastal rocky reefs and feeds on small benthic invertebrates. In Korea it is an important food fish and fry are cultured in hatcheries and released into the sea to augment the natural populations. The young are found among drifting seaweed. It is not usually used as an aquarium fish. I also confirm that it does not seem to have been recorded from the Mediterranean before.

Best regards,

Patrick Schembri

I don't know how on earth it finished in our sea except from coming in a ship coming from its origin.

Sorry if I confused you but that was my thought. I will check with a Professor at the university. Can you please give me some info where you caught this fish place, depth and the size of this fish and date.

It could be a hybrid.  Do you know if the specimen is still around?? is it maybe frozen or has it been released?? or already eaten?? haha

guys as keving correctly said it is not the same species shown to us by arti2. the one in the photo has got the dorsal spines that end in a large fin versus the very small fins of the sargu. also the sargu has colour on its mouth and no colour on its tail whilst this fish is the opposite.

in my opinon it has nothing in common with the sargu imperjal apart of the colour. It's more likely to be a tropical fish, looking at the back of it the tail hasn't got a V shape (meqluba) like most mediterreanean fish and got 2 fins at the top and bottom in which mediterreanen fish haven't got that feature at the back side.

If u take a good look at the back fin it has nothing to do with the one shown by arti. For me it's more something brought over with tankers and cruise ships.

That s a striped demsel fish its native of tropical waters. From were did you catch it? If you kept it alive its was worth a good price for those who have marine aquaria. Or if you would like to sell it go to akwarjumalfa and there you will sell it for sure....that kind of fish is very expensive even for its size.

I`ve got a very similar fish in of my aquariums. I`m not sure if its of the scat family. It was given to me by my bro as it was killing his fish. Apparently they are quite vicious so anyone who hasn`t got a brother to dump his unwanted fish on will invariably either flush them down the loo or throw them in the sea.

Looks like it should be in an Aquarium! I wonder if that was inside the ballast of one of the cruise liners.
