Ray

Previous Image | Next Image
Description: SimonG hooked into what could only have been a Ray of somekind, maybe a Stingray.

We were in 55m of water, but the strike occured at around 25m. Felt like the bottom, but was definately mid water....rod was giving a small downwards tap but it wouldn't budge.

After 15 mins hook pulled free......

Hard lines guys! that place is a very good spot  ;)
And speaking from personal experience if that Penn Spinfisher couldn't pull it up (i own one and they are total winches!) and seeing the bend on that rod of course,it must have been HUGE ray!

markcam, sargi can be hard to bite. some 3 yeras ago i encountered a similar instance at zonqor, i caught some 8 sargi in 2 hrs and maybe lost around 40  because of poor technique, and the rod fisherman, with ideal conditions( risacca, fluoro lines, ckal as bait) didn't even managed a sargu

at times fish can play jokes

surely could be a ray !!!!

There are quite an ammount of them right now roaming around our coasts. Last night we found 2 huge ones on our lines which we set free as they are not good to eat and also very dangerous

Everyone knows that catches like the one I posted are rare occurances.  As granitu well pointed out, out of 10 fish you see maybe you'll catch one.  For example last Saturday I saw much more sargi, a huge barracuda, another leccia and some nice Aj's which I didnt manage to land.  Obviously I wasn't complaining as I was already over the moon, and if I would liked to stay and catch more fish I could have cause I was out of the water by 1 p.m.

Regarding the catch with andreas, I'm sure that if there were rod fisherman they would have had a successful day as the place was infested with sargi.  The good thing about spearfishing is that it is easier to be selective.  With rods you get moray eels, smaller sargi(which you can release) etc. which I think can be annoying.  In my opinion every location has its niches and these niches are only learnt through experience.

marcam managed that catch cause he is a good spearfisherman and probably didn't find sppoky fish, but fish coming from the deep which is  less sensitive to us, speros.

each time he caught a fish the other's probably escaped, for 1 fish caught, 10 other's learnt a lesson

Still granitu you have a point but not a reason because if all the fisherman that fish via rods etc catch the fish that a spearfisherman catch (ex: the catch that markcam has just showed us)  I think people would stop working lol
I go a lot frequently to those places sometimes your luck and catch something but mostly nada, or some crap like eels etc.

no spearo chases a fish lapsi, it is harder to catch a fish spearfishing than fishing

when spearfishing one is playing away dear. if the fish wants, they come in range, if not, see you next time, or if they come, the spearo does an error

Skip there is fish but people think because its a very wild area if you go you catch for sure but its not the case.
Spearo it a different story because they catch the fish not the fish catch them   ;)

Def wasn't a plastic bag, doesn't pull down on the rod like a fish....... Could have been a net or a rope but then if it was either I very much doubt with the hook we were using that it would have pulled out.

There were Ray's around hence we thought it was probably one of those.
