SEAFOX Posts:315 | June 16, 2010, 16:27:43 CET Hi Guys - just got back from my first "Alongi" fishing trip plus the first sea trial of my Seafox which performed "par excallance". Could only manage one Alonga but it is a very decent size - 9.26kgs. Caught it at 18.8 miles SSW off Delimara point. The NW got pretty strong for a few hours so we headed home at noon. It does not appear the the Albies have as yet moved in. Sorry chaps I did not take any photo of the fish...thay all look the same to me! Good luck to all of you. |
MartinB Posts:665 | June 15, 2010, 21:21:10 CET Hi Seafox, once again well done on the fish(s)! Even though the oldies beat you! (Well they say experience count's after all!)..Amazing that an 80yrd old bloke can still handle a big Yellow tail their similar to "our" Greater amberjack..and i know they put a hell of a fight when they get big! he must be one fit 80yr old!! Also its really very interesting to hear that wahoo's are being caught around the North African coast! Personally ive never seen one caught here,so i thought that they must stick to the oceans and not come into the med.,although thinking about it now, what your saying makes alot of sense, as i know wahoo's are caught along the north-west african coast close to Gran Canaria,Tenerife etc so i guess they are following the coast into the med!? or maybe following the annual sardine migration like you mentioned? Well lets just hope they make their way to the middle of the med. one day eh? Like i said id love to have a crack at one,as i have heard they are awesome fighters on rod & reel! No worries about their teeth though mate,im a fisherman so i don't have hands when unhooking a sharp toothed fish are concerned i have pliers and if that don't unhook it..a sharp baiting knife usually does the trick! |
SEAFOX Posts:315 | June 15, 2010, 20:11:24 CET Hi Malvizzu and MartinB –Grazzi hafna for your ratings. First of all you can see an 80 year old guy (no BS) behind me in the pic. He was using an Avet reel and was constantly hooking the Yellow Tails with live bait of course. Seeing that from past correspondence not much is known about the Wahoo in Malta. Please allow me to share my knowledge on this topic. As far as I know, and I could be mistaken, no Hoo (as it is called in the USA) has ever been caught close to our Island. It is very abundant in the Pacific, I landed 5 of them, ranging from 22kgs to 30kgs, using 10 inch brightly coloured Maurader lures 2 years ago on a 12 day fishing charter trip. Well I was with 19 top US guys who were very familiar with hooking these large fighting fish plus other Pelagic species. Those chaps got twice as much as I did and most of them were well over 70 years of age! As a mater of interest Wahoo does exist in the Med. around the North African coast. Being a regular visitor to Libya I noted at the Tripoli fish markets huge Wahoos being sold at a very high price due to its "tasty flesh". The fish is called "Yemenia" in North African countries and it appears to me to be an "oversize" Barracuda. . The name change is derived from the fact that the fish roams around the Yemeni seas and is plentiful there too. On asking several Libyan fishermen I found out that between May and August it travels from Yemen up the Red Sea though the Suez and turns left into the Med. Its habitat is mainly the Gulf of Sirte close to the coast but after August nobody seems to know if the Hoo returns to the Yemeni waters or leaves through the Straits into the Atlantic. I strongly believe that in time the Wahoo would be found in the central Med, this could be well after my time! MartinB, unless you are my age I wish you the best of luck in hooking one of these in the future but please be careful, keep your feet and hands away from the fish as they are very powerful and dangerous. In case any member wishes to know how to fish (trolling method) for Wahoo let me know and I shall oblige. |
