It is less an issue of weight than of shape. I'm sure the perla will take the weight of large engines but will not deliver the performance. The speed of traditional hulls (displacement hulls) is limited by their shape and with a 125 hp the boat will not move any faster than with a 60 hp. It will simply sink lower at the back, create more waves, burn more fuel but it will not move any faster since these boats are not designed to plane. I think your engines would be very suitable for a planing hull such as a 17 foot fastfisher. But if I were you I would discuss the issue with petecraft before making any decisions.

I agree - I bought these engines to install on a wooden kajjik but my scale is shifting towards a perla now which obviously is lighter and might not take the weight of both engines.  I'll see and i might try to sell my 125hp then.

@lazyfisherman: i totally agree with you. I am going to install a 60hp engine in my perla which i think it would be a good match. Even at petecraft told me that installing a big engine on these type of boats is not the right match.

I am anything but an expert but I don't think that these traditionally shaped hulls are meant to take such large engines. I'm sure that it can physically take the 125 hp engine but i think that it will be overpowered in the sense that you will end up getting a performance that is no better than that from a  smaller engine. Even if it may have been fitted on a boat in Gozo it does not mean that it is necessarily the best combination of boat and engine. Ma nafx - won't it be better to discuss this with the people at Petecraft?

@shaftbomb: that perla with 125hp is my uncles'.  He installed that engine because he had one already which was on a larger boat. 125 hp on a perla is a bit too much since it is a displacement hull.

Nice great boat - a traditionally designed boat that has proved its worth many years ago.  What engines are you planning to install if i may ask?
