We listed a friendly competition, Coastal Boat Fishing for Feb 10th although nothing has been decided about what type of fishing this will be.

let's have some discussion and suggestions so we get a better picture.

Thanks to Buona Pesca Trading this friendly is now known as the Okuma Coastal Boat Friendly.

Feb 10th is soon with us..... i think it would be best to start a list of - intent to participate, listing the boat, skipper and crew.

Also, a bar gettogether is going to be organised on the 5th of Feb for 2 main reasons,

1....further discussion regarding the upcoming competiton and a briefing re: safty etc as we had done at punch & judy before the albacore competion.

2.... to meet up and have a good time as usual..... all members are encouraged to join with their respective partners (participating or not).

Like that, we'll be hitting 2 birds with one stone, meeting up for a social event and discussing the upcoming friendly competition.

More details can be found later on in a thread i will be starting soon with regards to the bar event.

Post by: skip on January 25, 2010, 20:22:45 CET
I would like to make this open trolling, jigging or bottom fishing (no electric reels). That way we should attract a diverse size of boats. max 3nm offshore and in a designated fishing area to be decided upon. Def Bigboy's idea of a 11am departure to give people chance to launch etc and back by sunset.

However would be nice to have 5 boats. Assuming SimonG is free to tow me and join, count Eagle One in :)

Title: Re: Okuma Coastal Boat Friendly - 10th Feb
Post by: skip on February 02, 2010, 21:02:23 CET
we'll discuss on Friday but we're looking like meeting up somewhere like the entrance to St. Georges or St. Julians Bay for some shelter giving people a chance to launch from somewhere on the East coast and then heading out from there. If we remain just a few boats we can always pull alongside the jetty near Banis in St. Julians.

On Friday we'll need to designate the fishing area, clarify the points system that will be used (fish weight x species multiplier), but basically we will be working on overall weight. Something like tumbrell with have no multiplier whereas something like a Dentex will have a 5x multiplier for instance (just examples). All fish will need to be legal and above minimum size. Return by 17.00 as boats will need to make their way back to their respective slipways etc.

Guys was having a chat with nick about the competition.

The points are going to work out this way:

Common fish like tumbrell, kubrit etc will have no points multiplier so i.e. 1 point per 100g this is due to the face that these fish are caught in abundonce.

Fish like Dentex, Pagri, sargi, AJ etc (within minimum size requirements) will have a 3x multiplier i.e. 3 points per 100g.

It is a must that all undersized fish should be released!!!!

From my point of view as I was talking with nick, this time of the year is not the best time for bottom fishing. As for trolling the main species that are common to encounter are tumbrell, kubrit, plamti and barracuda.

The fishing methods which will be allowed in the competition are Bottom fishing, Jigging and Trolling.

Competition will start off @ 11am in the mouth of Marsamxett harbour and will end at 5.30pm at st julians (Banis Jetty).

Since we are a small group it is much easyer for us to cooperate with eachother.

Anything else that you feel should be discussed can be posted here and then we will discuss them on Friday evening.

Come on Guys lets make this friendly competition a day out at sea to enjoy ourselves. I also emphasize that all Skippers make sure that their boats are equipped with safety equipment in case of an emergency.

Need anything on that day my number is 99385795, or else give a shout on the vhf channel 6 - Call Sign Bigboy

Consensus was to re-schedule to another date in February (weekend) weather permitting. Let's keep an eye on the weather forecast, however looks like Wed 10th will be postponed.

Hmm what the wind gods saying? Looking like a F3/4 coming down from the North so it depends whether the smaller boats still want to bounce around in a swell/F3-4

I think we can pretty much say forget it. Might be calm in the morning hours but not suitable for the window of 11am till 5.30pm.

Postponed again.

27th Feb

So we will be meeting on the water at 11.30am near the quay of Banis in St. Julians Bay for an intended departure of midday. VHF Channel 06

Boats can stay out until 17.15 at the latest because I want to have all fish weighed in by 17:45 so that we can all leave by 18:00 latest so that those people pulling their boats back out on a trailer don't have to do it in the dark.

Maximum distance offshore 6nm
Fishing area - From Opposite Qawra Point down the coast to opposite Grand Harbour (You cannot go further south than Grand Harbour or further North than Qawra Point)

Tumbrell, Kubrit, Plamti and similar fish will count 1:1 (eg 2kgs = 2kgs)
Acciola 1.5:1 (eg 1kgs = 1.5kgs)
Dentex, Cerna 2:1 (eg 1kgs = 2kgs)
Pastardella 2:1 (eg 1kgs = 2kgs)

We will be adding up the total weight from each boat rather than the total number of fish.

Spoke with Robby about it or give me a call.

Tomorrow according the various marine forecasts is looking to be a good F 4 according the marine forecasts with tonights wind being F5/6 so probably kicking up a swell. It isn't forecast to die down until the evening.

I'm happy to launch and see how we go but could be we all end up in the port. What do you think?

I don't have everyone's mobile numbers so you'd better check online first thing tomorrow because if the F5/4 forecast for the morning persists I think we should cancel.

Wind is an F5/4 at the moment which means we will NOT be meeting in St. Julians. Fortuna and myself will be launching from Qawra and staying in the shelter of Qawra bay until early afternoon 14.00-15.00 when we might be able to venture out and down the coast.

Bigboy I will leave it up to you to liaise with Luke and Ninja if he comes and then we will keep in touch to see what happens by the evening finish time, where we will try and keep to meeting at 5.00-5.15 in St. Julians.

I would normally cancel this event, but as we're only going to be 4 boats max 5 we may as well just go out as a friendly and have some fun in the safest manner possible.

Well done guys, seems like everyone enjoyed the match, not a great deal caught, but I see everyone had a good day.
Remember it is not the winning, it is the taking part.
SOJ is back in the water next week so, Skip lets have another friendly soon.

How are the competitions organised, by the way, are there set dates, throughout the season, when there are matches  on, friendly or otherwise and do we pay match/competition fee's.
Are there specific area's allocated were everyone must fish, during matches, to make it fair for all skippers, by this I mean skippers who may have a bigger boat, can cover a far larger area of water than a skipper who's boat may not be on the larger size.
Hope you don't mind the questions, just trying to get a feel of how you run things out here.

Captain Gus

Hi Gus
We have various competitions organised by the forum, Spear fishing, land fishing and boat fishing. The major one being for Alungi. the rules are various and are issued according to the venue.
By the way dont be tooooooooo sure about having the bigger faster boat produces the better catch. As last year we had the experts out fishing for Alungi, We had fast small boats, fast large boats with outriggers, but, and I am not downsizing anything, the competition was won by a 14ft Dinghy. Well done there........

Post by: skip on February 28, 2010, 19:21:30 CET
The only boat to catch a fish whilst bottom fishing was Fortuna/Maltembu who caught a small Burqax (unknown weight).

None of the other boats placed because there were no fish around. In addition we didn't follow the loosely set guidelines of start and finish location plus the fishing area due to the bad weather that was being experienced for most of the day.

In fact myself and Fortuna who launched from Qawra were unable to make it down towards St. Julian's due to the prevailing conditions, and the vessels who departed from Msida went straight out as best they could. As such we had no proper starting or finishing point.

I've spoken with Fortuna as ultimately how he feels about the matter makes a difference and he was happy for us to create a Round 2 of this event assuming the other boats would like to take part. I feel (but I want to hear your comments) though should other vessels want to take part in Round 2 they are welcome to do so, but Fortuna will enter Round 2 already with a points advantage to recognise that he was the only vessel to catch something in Round 1 !!

In addition the feeling is that for trolling etc we should start in the morning early so this will need to be factored in to Round 2. I will be away from Sat 6th March until Sat 13th March, if one of the Senior Moderators can take care of supervising the event they are free to arrange whilst I am away, other we will be looking at either the 20th or 21st of March?

if the weather permits, I ll be fishing on Lapsi area same day same time, so we can compare the fish stock. I will not be doing this for the price or placing.
It s long time that we had bad weather, i'm out from diving for 7 weeks, so don t kniw if there's tumbrell or not.

SOJ now back in the water.
Brought her around from Bugiba, to Taxbiex, yesterday. (applogise for any incorrect spelling}.
Around 17 knot winds, giving a swell of around 1.5 to 2 metre's in places, but everything went very well.

Now looking forward to getting out with you guys and hopefully catch some nice fish.

Captain Gus

How about round 2 on Friday 19th (Public Holiday) as this is showing the best weather forecast so far.

Perhaps Bigboy, Robby and Co. can confirm if there are still tumbrell around?

We'd have to decide on the start time bearing in mind that a few of us have to launch their boat.

if the wind will be and remain ssw you have no problems on the east coast..... up to 2-3 miles it will still be calm (ilqugh ta l art)..... but if its any different i agree with rennie

Currently deciding on a min fish weight of between 750-1000g .....

If the others can't make it and it's only 3 boats I am of the opinion that we should postpone to another weekend, but it's up to you guys, either way.

Otherwise same rules apply as Round 1 - finish 11.30 -12.00 at Banis Jetty Balluta
Title: Re: Okuma Coastal Boat Friendly - 10th Feb
Post by: bigboy on March 18, 2010, 20:35:29 CET
I agree with you nick. We should pospone so even you can take part !!!
Title: Re: Okuma Coastal Boat Friendly - 10th Feb
Post by: skip on March 18, 2010, 21:10:27 CET
Looks like we will postpone due to a lack of participants.

For reference:

Min fish size 400g caught either Trolling, Jigging or Bottom Fishing (no electric reels)
In addition min legal sizes apply

Multiplier as per previous round and relisted below:

Maximum distance offshore 6nm
Fishing area - From St. Paul's Fish Farms down the coast to opposite Grand Harbour (You cannot go further south than Grand Harbour or further North than SPB Outer Fish Farms)

Tumbrell, Kubrit, Plamti and similar common fish will count 1:1 (eg 2kgs = 2kgs)
Acciola 1.5:1 (eg 1kgs = 1.5kgs)
Dentex, Cerna 2:1 (eg 1kgs = 2kgs)
Pastardella 2:1 (eg 1kgs = 2kgs)

We will be adding up the total weight from each boat rather than the total number of fish.

Title: Re: Okuma Coastal Boat Friendly - 10th Feb

its a rule that does not make sense if you ask me....... anyhow, screw it, i'll use a manual multiplier with a line counter instead.........
Title: Re: Okuma Coastal Boat Friendly - 10th Feb
Post by: bigboy on March 20, 2010, 19:09:35 CET
jekk qallek no downrigger mela no downrigger !!!!!!!

Title: Re: Okuma Coastal Boat Friendly - 10th Feb
Post by: skip on March 20, 2010, 19:22:49 CET
The rule is no electric reels. No point winging about it now, next time ask when things were being discussed. There's nothing about no downriggers just no electric reels. So a manual ok ... at this stage the biggest problem seems to be number of participants!

Title: Re: Okuma Coastal Boat Friendly - 10th Feb
Post by: busumark on March 20, 2010, 20:04:04 CET
what robby is trying to say is that there are some eletric reels like the kristal fishing that can be used as a downrigger for trolling. these i think can be used as a downrigger for trolling if one can use a downrigger in the competition. if someone who has this type of reel uses it for bottom fishing you would know by the fish he would have caught

Title: Re: Okuma Coastal Boat Friendly - 10th Feb
Post by: robby017 on March 21, 2010, 13:45:06 CET
I don't want to use it for deep sea fishing but as a downrigger for trolling live bait in 40 to 50 meters... I'll manage the same with a manual reel, no problem...

Quote6 nm from shore is about 130 mts. robby is a big boy for him its not a problem to fish in that depth with a manual reel.
used a manual reel in 200 meters for circa 3 hours straight and caught nice bazug too......... so no problems there either....

Oh come on Nick, can't we joke around a bit anymore on the forum, after all, as you said this is a friendly and the aim of it is to go out all together and have a great day out at sea, im ok with the no electric reels, i don't want it to be an issue and we don't need to stay taking a vote about it... also its obvious to say that no longlines are allowed, we had already mentioned that on another thread if i'm not mistaken.

Furthermore with regards to planning it out, i find no objection in helping you out as i did with the getogether to discuss this same friendly but I am not the administrator of this forum and i respect the fact that however we go about it, you will have the final say...

Windfinder is giving Force2-3 till 10 am S-SSE backing to NW force5 by 1pm...

MIA weather is giving Variable force 3 backing to WNW force3-4 later in the afternoon...

SD Weather is giving SSE Force 4 backing to NW Force 7........

What do you think guys??? Who is available for Round 2 so if the weather looks good, we can go for it.

Robby you have carte blanche on this one in terms of organisation, seems there will still be a small number of boats taking part and this week I have the graveyard shift in addition to my normal working day along with a super busy weekend. However if the weather pans out I suggest you guys go for it, and everyone to liaise with Robby for details etc.

Otherwise looks like some time over the Easter break.

Seems to have gone quiet with referencne to Round 2, as Robert says the weather is looking okay for this Sunday, come on guys lets give it a go. Knowing my luck, you will probably have round two, between the 12 and 26 of April, while I am back n the U.K.
If anyone would like anything bringing back, as long as it does not weigh much or take up much suitcase room, then please let me know and I will try my best to bring it back.
