We listed a friendly competition, Coastal Boat Fishing for Feb 10th although nothing has been decided about what type of fishing this will be.
let's have some discussion and suggestions so we get a better picture.
Thanks to Buona Pesca Trading this friendly is now known as the Okuma Coastal Boat Friendly.

i say trolling !
Not so good for bottom fishing in febuary
if everyone who is taking part or someone who is going with him has a rixa tat tumbrell i would suggest going for tumbrell.
i agree with busu xD. imsoma laqwa li bir rixa:)

When we get back on topic and back to English let me know what the preference is.
Skip: Seems the preference is to have a trolling competition on the 10th February - open trolling, not targeting a specific fish

GAGA the Gaffer!!!
Feb 10th is soon with us..... i think it would be best to start a list of - intent to participate, listing the boat, skipper and crew.
Also, a bar gettogether is going to be organised on the 5th of Feb for 2 main reasons,
1....further discussion regarding the upcoming competiton and a briefing re: safty etc as we had done at punch & judy before the albacore competion.
2.... to meet up and have a good time as usual..... all members are encouraged to join with their respective partners (participating or not).
Like that, we'll be hitting 2 birds with one stone, meeting up for a social event and discussing the upcoming friendly competition.
More details can be found later on in a thread i will be starting soon with regards to the bar event.
List of participants:
Boat: Skipper: Crew:
1) Aranciata Robby017 Camkev, Maltembu, Alfadelta (all crew - still to confirm)

@ bigboy- qed inxom naqa competition bejn zewg skipper's lupi b'zewg timijiet mimlijin lupi...... lol
I would like to make this open trolling, jigging or bottom fishing (no electric reels). That way we should attract a diverse size of boats. max 3nm offshore and in a designated fishing area to be decided upon. Def Bigboy's idea of a 11am departure to give people chance to launch etc and back by sunset.
However would be nice to have 5 boats. Assuming SimonG is free to tow me and join, count Eagle One in :)
yeahhh bring it on skip :P
I'll be gratfull if my request is granted :P
competition bejn zewg dajes? lol ???

I have to agree with robby, whoever has a boat can go out and maybe take someone who doesn't have one,it's useless have 3 people who own a boat and they will be in the competion on 1 boat ::)

Long range forecast for the 10th isn't looking very good guys :(
on sd weather it looks fine nick
Yeah you're right, would help if I looked at the right day, was looking at the 5th!! oops - now I'm happy again!
ejja nickyyy :P
Where are we leaving from ??? Anyways my boat will be in the sea so i will have to leve from msida !!!
we'll discuss on Friday but we're looking like meeting up somewhere like the entrance to St. Georges or St. Julians Bay for some shelter giving people a chance to launch from somewhere on the East coast and then heading out from there. If we remain just a few boats we can always pull alongside the jetty near Banis in St. Julians.
On Friday we'll need to designate the fishing area, clarify the points system that will be used (fish weight x species multiplier), but basically we will be working on overall weight. Something like tumbrell with have no multiplier whereas something like a Dentex will have a 5x multiplier for instance (just examples). All fish will need to be legal and above minimum size. Return by 17.00 as boats will need to make their way back to their respective slipways etc.
fair enough :)
Seems like you will be jigging mela nicky :P

Guys was having a chat with nick about the competition.
The points are going to work out this way:
Common fish like tumbrell, kubrit etc will have no points multiplier so i.e. 1 point per 100g this is due to the face that these fish are caught in abundonce.
Fish like Dentex, Pagri, sargi, AJ etc (within minimum size requirements) will have a 3x multiplier i.e. 3 points per 100g.
It is a must that all undersized fish should be released!!!!
From my point of view as I was talking with nick, this time of the year is not the best time for bottom fishing. As for trolling the main species that are common to encounter are tumbrell, kubrit, plamti and barracuda.
The fishing methods which will be allowed in the competition are Bottom fishing, Jigging and Trolling.
Competition will start off @ 11am in the mouth of Marsamxett harbour and will end at 5.30pm at st julians (Banis Jetty).
Since we are a small group it is much easyer for us to cooperate with eachother.
Anything else that you feel should be discussed can be posted here and then we will discuss them on Friday evening.
Come on Guys lets make this friendly competition a day out at sea to enjoy ourselves. I also emphasize that all Skippers make sure that their boats are equipped with safety equipment in case of an emergency.
Need anything on that day my number is 99385795, or else give a shout on the vhf channel 6 - Call Sign Bigboy
kieku tajjeb nispiccaw san giljan...... nispera nirrangaw is sibt bigboy.......
Guys, hate to soud such an alarmist...however Windfinder.com is forecasting a Westerly wind F5 to 6 on Wednesday 10 February. :-[ Better start thinking of rescheduling (weekends please - so the Gaffer can participate) ;D ;D .
Even F7 at 1.00pm :(
Definately does not look good. How about Sat 13 or Sun 14th as alternatives? If not we'll have to let this one pass
Most of the skippers and crew will be in Gozo skip....nadur carnival.... ;)
If the weather remains as currently forecast, I doubt we will reschedule. We can discuss a bit tomorrow
if it gets re-scheduled, providing i'm off work, I'll be willing to split costs and join a crew if there is space. Especially if there is jigging involved :D
Consensus was to re-schedule to another date in February (weekend) weather permitting. Let's keep an eye on the weather forecast, however looks like Wed 10th will be postponed.
wouldn't have guessed that.......... fingers crossed.
Is it going to be held next weekend nick ?
Hmm what the wind gods saying? Looking like a F3/4 coming down from the North so it depends whether the smaller boats still want to bounce around in a swell/F3-4
I think we can pretty much say forget it. Might be calm in the morning hours but not suitable for the window of 11am till 5.30pm.
Postponed again.
New tentative date: 27th Feb
Looks promissing guys for next saturday :)
Lots of tumbrell are presently being caught

good luck and have fun
Daniel
em..... not looking so good for saturday according to MIA forecast!
not even repairs are looking good........ lol
East coast is not looking good on Saturday until late evening.......
Windfinder Forecast map for East coast looks like a no go guys
lol..... mela grounded! better luck next time ux!
the weather changed again..it looks good now!
Yep looks do-able again!! Shall we take a final decision tomorrow (Friday) at midday?
Let's have some feedback from those who confirmed their attendence
it's fine for me
ok guys :)
Can you all post where you intend to launch from.......
Trying to see about the start and finish times which maybe need to be revised slightly depending on this info
Feroci and myself will both be leaving from msida
27th Feb
So we will be meeting on the water at 11.30am near the quay of Banis in St. Julians Bay for an intended departure of midday. VHF Channel 06
Boats can stay out until 17.15 at the latest because I want to have all fish weighed in by 17:45 so that we can all leave by 18:00 latest so that those people pulling their boats back out on a trailer don't have to do it in the dark.
Maximum distance offshore 6nm
Fishing area - From Opposite Qawra Point down the coast to opposite Grand Harbour (You cannot go further south than Grand Harbour or further North than Qawra Point)
Tumbrell, Kubrit, Plamti and similar fish will count 1:1 (eg 2kgs = 2kgs)
Acciola 1.5:1 (eg 1kgs = 1.5kgs)
Dentex, Cerna 2:1 (eg 1kgs = 2kgs)
Pastardella 2:1 (eg 1kgs = 2kgs)
We will be adding up the total weight from each boat rather than the total number of fish.
good luck to ALL ! enjoy guys
starting and finishing in st julians is perfect for me as the boathouse is there.... the only prob is i'm waiting on the mechanic to find the part I need and come fix it in today.... no part, no go... If I do get the boat working, Kane will have some competition then as we both know the east coast well........ issa naraw.......
nick waiting for your reply please about my problem
Spoke with Robby about it or give me a call.
Tomorrow according the various marine forecasts is looking to be a good F 4 according the marine forecasts with tonights wind being F5/6 so probably kicking up a swell. It isn't forecast to die down until the evening.
I'm happy to launch and see how we go but could be we all end up in the port. What do you think?
I don't have everyone's mobile numbers so you'd better check online first thing tomorrow because if the F5/4 forecast for the morning persists I think we should cancel.
thanks nick
i will leave msida at around 2.15 all depends how long my exam takes
Aranciata is out for tomorrow due to mechanical problem re:part not being readily available........
List of participants for the 27th Feb:
Boat: Skipper: Crew:
1) Aranciata (?) Robby017 Maltembu & Benri
2) Alalunga Bigboy Perla 165 & robby017
3) JosRay Luke Feroci Justin Pullicino
4) Eagle One Skip Gareth and Skip's nephew
5) Ninja
6)-------- Fortuna ForTuna ( crew to be confirmed)
Goodmorning guys :)
Nick i will be going out early since the learner called me and told me to do the test at 8am.
Shall be at st julians bu 11.30
Wind is an F5/4 at the moment which means we will NOT be meeting in St. Julians. Fortuna and myself will be launching from Qawra and staying in the shelter of Qawra bay until early afternoon 14.00-15.00 when we might be able to venture out and down the coast.
Bigboy I will leave it up to you to liaise with Luke and Ninja if he comes and then we will keep in touch to see what happens by the evening finish time, where we will try and keep to meeting at 5.00-5.15 in St. Julians.
I would normally cancel this event, but as we're only going to be 4 boats max 5 we may as well just go out as a friendly and have some fun in the safest manner possible.
Nick the conditions do not seem to be bad. Sea is in a moderate state so not that bad. Previsions are that the sea is sapposed to calm down
Overall winner ???
Well done to the organisers and to all those who took part (regardless of the results)!
This purely shows how fishing is a fun sport when done together and how we should not wait for competitions to organise fishing trips!
All those who stayed out for klamari...I hope you had better luck! ;)
u prosit lil Big Boy talli ghamel cappuccino bir-rawa fuq il-bahar!!
they caught a couple of squids...
we caught 3 nice squids ::)
and 2 buggers got away....... but at least we all landed a squid....... ole' thanks big and perla..... xorta hadna buzzzzzzz

nigu f'dan laqas il perla......... pero, nigu f'dan ukoll jien ul perla misewna 2 kull wiehed, il big messu wiehed, u kien ha jiehdu jghum ax sabih kien.
The only boat to catch a fish during the competition was Team Fortuna/Maltembu, even though it was a small Burqax which they caught with a light bottom rig inside Qawra bay.
Not sure how much it weighed......
And the winner is ??? ???
Well done guys, seems like everyone enjoyed the match, not a great deal caught, but I see everyone had a good day.
Remember it is not the winning, it is the taking part.
SOJ is back in the water next week so, Skip lets have another friendly soon.
How are the competitions organised, by the way, are there set dates, throughout the season, when there are matches on, friendly or otherwise and do we pay match/competition fee's.
Are there specific area's allocated were everyone must fish, during matches, to make it fair for all skippers, by this I mean skippers who may have a bigger boat, can cover a far larger area of water than a skipper who's boat may not be on the larger size.
Hope you don't mind the questions, just trying to get a feel of how you run things out here.
Captain Gus
February 2010
Wednesday 10th (Public Holiday) - Coastal Boat Friendly
June 2010
6th/7th/13th - Alungi Boat Trolling Competition (Dates will remain flexible due to fish/weather)
Weekend after Alungi Comp - Boat Spearo Comp
July 2010
Sunday 25th - General Land fishing
October 2010
Sunday 31st - Spearfishing shore
November 2009
Sunday 28th - Land fishing Competition
Hi Gus
We have various competitions organised by the forum, Spear fishing, land fishing and boat fishing. The major one being for Alungi. the rules are various and are issued according to the venue.
By the way dont be tooooooooo sure about having the bigger faster boat produces the better catch. As last year we had the experts out fishing for Alungi, We had fast small boats, fast large boats with outriggers, but, and I am not downsizing anything, the competition was won by a 14ft Dinghy. Well done there........
The only boat to catch a fish whilst bottom fishing was Fortuna/Maltembu who caught a small Burqax (unknown weight).
None of the other boats placed because there were no fish around. In addition we didn't follow the loosely set guidelines of start and finish location plus the fishing area due to the bad weather that was being experienced for most of the day.
In fact myself and Fortuna who launched from Qawra were unable to make it down towards St. Julian's due to the prevailing conditions, and the vessels who departed from Msida went straight out as best they could. As such we had no proper starting or finishing point.
I've spoken with Fortuna as ultimately how he feels about the matter makes a difference and he was happy for us to create a Round 2 of this event assuming the other boats would like to take part. I feel (but I want to hear your comments) though should other vessels want to take part in Round 2 they are welcome to do so, but Fortuna will enter Round 2 already with a points advantage to recognise that he was the only vessel to catch something in Round 1 !!
In addition the feeling is that for trolling etc we should start in the morning early so this will need to be factored in to Round 2. I will be away from Sat 6th March until Sat 13th March, if one of the Senior Moderators can take care of supervising the event they are free to arrange whilst I am away, other we will be looking at either the 20th or 21st of March?
i'm definitely in for round 2 :)
Lets have a round 2 guys :)
to help you decide better okuma will still give a prize for round one to all the crew on the Fortuna.
we'll be offering a strike pro lure each which will for sure help you catch more during round 2 :)
good luck to all for round 2
Thank you very much OKUMA-1976 . In fact while on the phone with Nick i agreed with the 2nd round , I hope that we'll have better weather and hopefully more boats out :)
Thanks as usual for all the replies.
Will round 2 be open to any boats, or just to the boats that competed in round 1.
Cheers as always.
Captain Gus
hopefully i'll be in for round 2 with aranciata...... if not hopefully bigboy and perla will take me out with them again....... had a really good time out there..... ta min nippostjaw il video aw..... x'tahsbu l ahwa ?
Gus I think we can open Round 2 to other boats......
What do you think guys....is everyone happy with that?
Thanks Okuma for that very kind gesture :)

you're all very welcome
that's the least i could do.

Guys try and keep it in english and translate these last few posts pls
Big, who told you li I won't be out with you, and we film another video... I see it over and over and laugh, hi hi hi
if the weather permits, I ll be fishing on Lapsi area same day same time, so we can compare the fish stock. I will not be doing this for the price or placing.
It s long time that we had bad weather, i'm out from diving for 7 weeks, so don t kniw if there's tumbrell or not.
Even i might be out there dward... from the boat
nop robby you lost your place now !!!!!!
@ bigboy------ > jien biex nipprovdilek naqa competition ta big...... f'gieh alla ,,,,,, b-burqax irnexilhom jerbhulna......
?English?
robby this time im gonna change tactics hux ;) i have a different strategy ;)
good luck kane....... just remember, i'll have my lines in the water too this time round...... ;-)
SOJ now back in the water.
Brought her around from Bugiba, to Taxbiex, yesterday. (applogise for any incorrect spelling}.
Around 17 knot winds, giving a swell of around 1.5 to 2 metre's in places, but everything went very well.
Now looking forward to getting out with you guys and hopefully catch some nice fish.
Captain Gus
well done....... fyi , they are Bugibba and Ta' Xbiex...... but well understood so no worries.
There's a good possibility I'll be joining with my boat and crew if it's on the 20th. This is however subject to a boat moving out of the garage.
How about round 2 on Friday 19th (Public Holiday) as this is showing the best weather forecast so far.
Perhaps Bigboy, Robby and Co. can confirm if there are still tumbrell around?
We'd have to decide on the start time bearing in mind that a few of us have to launch their boat.
if its on friday, i can't make it unfortunately as i have lessons from 9-2pm....... fish are there, you only have to find them ;)
neither i cant make it next friday :/
Saturday is showing a Good F3, just touching an F4 but still early days to know for sure the actual forecast. We can choose to monitor and then take a decision on Thursday eve?
What do you think guys
for me and kane, force 3-4 is no biggie as i'll be with Captain Gus on the SOJ and Kane's boat was able to handle force 5 with me on board..... sooooooo...... we'd better wait till thursday to have a better idea of the weather.
Yes but Rob keep in mind.... it's fishing competition. Let's play this one safe guys. My decision is that I will not launch if it's stronger than a force 3 this time.....
if the wind will be and remain ssw you have no problems on the east coast..... up to 2-3 miles it will still be calm (ilqugh ta l art)..... but if its any different i agree with rennie
with sw winds you will have to forget bahar ic caq area guys unless it is 2-3.
i think that SW is the best wind for bahar ic caq big!! it should be very sheltered
for up to 1nm yes it is. For me even if it f5 my boat can take it with no problemx but for the small light boats it is not ideal
Guys if you want to do it on Saturday that's ok with me, I will be around for the finish if someone can co-ordinate the start but will not be launching myself due to other commitments.
But it seems most of you are free on Sat......not sure about Luke, Ren, SOJ, Ninja?
I can confirm for Saturday.
Saturday is good for me also.
I'll be out with SOJ
what time are we starting ?
morning or afternoon?
Early morning start seemed to be the pref for tumbrell etc. 6....6.30am, Ren give us your input as you have to launch so you need some light.
ok, so if we start early morning, we need a finish time.... what's that gonna be?
Saturday ok for me
We had it listed for an 11.30am finish time......is that okay for you guys?
I will shortly be posting some clarified basic rules, but in a nutshell there will be a minimum fish size to count
then we'd better wait for the set of rules and regulations.......
Rule 1 ) no tumbrell - ahahahaha
Rule no 2) No brieqex
hahaha that's a winner for sure :p
Rule 3 no vomiting :D
np for me we r in. Luke's boat is up so he wont be taking part.
if we're starting at 6 am , i need to launch at about 5am so i'll have time to join the others, time is not a problem for me
where are we meeting ?
st. andrews ??? quddiem ir ranchijiet jew? nofs triq hemm!
........ Forcast is SSE Force 4 on windfinder.... still going for it???
if it's blowing from South we'l can fish in 2 miles max then it get's rougher for sure ...what are your thoughts guys ?
I think SE is not good on our side,it will stay hitting you on the side of the boat >:(
Any decisions yet ? only 3 boats confirmed so far BigBoy, SOJ and myslef ......
Fil kas xorta ghadni interessat fl ewwel premju :D
Can i take part with a paddle boat??I will stay in imsida for mulett..still from the boat ;) u nohodulek jien il premju fortuna :) ;) :D ;D
hahaha l aktar jekk tixxutja il qasba terga lol!!!
Currently deciding on a min fish weight of between 750-1000g .....
If the others can't make it and it's only 3 boats I am of the opinion that we should postpone to another weekend, but it's up to you guys, either way.
Otherwise same rules apply as Round 1 - finish 11.30 -12.00 at Banis Jetty Balluta
I agree with you nick. We should pospone so even you can take part !!!
Looks like we will postpone due to a lack of participants.
For reference:
Min fish size 400g caught either Trolling, Jigging or Bottom Fishing (no electric reels)
In addition min legal sizes apply
Multiplier as per previous round and relisted below:
Maximum distance offshore 6nm
Fishing area - From St. Paul's Fish Farms down the coast to opposite Grand Harbour (You cannot go further south than Grand Harbour or further North than SPB Outer Fish Farms)
Tumbrell, Kubrit, Plamti and similar common fish will count 1:1 (eg 2kgs = 2kgs)
Acciola 1.5:1 (eg 1kgs = 1.5kgs)
Dentex, Cerna 2:1 (eg 1kgs = 2kgs)
Pastardella 2:1 (eg 1kgs = 2kgs)
We will be adding up the total weight from each boat rather than the total number of fish.
Nick
I take it the match has been postponed until a later date.
Captain Gus
Yes that's correct Gus, not enough people could make it.
so....... we can't use an electric reel as a downrigger??? whats the point of no electric reels nick?
Those are the rules man!
its a rule that does not make sense if you ask me....... anyhow, screw it, i'll use a manual multiplier with a line counter instead.........
jekk qallek no downrigger mela no downrigger !!!!!!!
The rule is no electric reels. No point winging about it now, next time ask when things were being discussed. There's nothing about no downriggers just no electric reels. So a manual ok ... at this stage the biggest problem seems to be number of participants!
probably bryan will make it and I might be able to join as well well see.........
what robby is trying to say is that there are some eletric reels like the kristal fishing that can be used as a downrigger for trolling. these i think can be used as a downrigger for trolling if one can use a downrigger in the competition. if someone who has this type of reel uses it for bottom fishing you would know by the fish he would have caught
It's a bit late for all these last min things but I will leave it to a majority vote from those taking part after al this is a friendly
forget it...... no electric reels..... not worth the hassle, i'll just do it the good old fashinoned way.
Has a new date for the match been decided yet.
6 nm from shore is about 130 mts. robby is a big boy for him its not a problem to fish in that depth with a manual reel. :D :D
I don't want to use it for deep sea fishing but as a downrigger for trolling live bait in 40 to 50 meters... I'll manage the same with a manual reel, no problem...

used a manual reel in 200 meters for circa 3 hours straight and caught nice bazug too......... so no problems there either....

if the boat's ready in time we'll gladly give it a shot jigging :)
In the interim I might take some private lessons..... 10x Skip :)
can i use longlines ? :D :P
Apparently yes... Its not in the rules...
Tell you what, Robby this is now in your hands to organise, re-set the rules and the date/time.
Once you've all been out, done your thing and come up with a winner just let me know.
Thanks
Oh come on Nick, can't we joke around a bit anymore on the forum, after all, as you said this is a friendly and the aim of it is to go out all together and have a great day out at sea, im ok with the no electric reels, i don't want it to be an issue and we don't need to stay taking a vote about it... also its obvious to say that no longlines are allowed, we had already mentioned that on another thread if i'm not mistaken.
Furthermore with regards to planning it out, i find no objection in helping you out as i did with the getogether to discuss this same friendly but I am not the administrator of this forum and i respect the fact that however we go about it, you will have the final say...
Harmony ;D
Still a little early but who can make next Saturday morning for Round 2.....
Windfinder is giving Force2-3 till 10 am S-SSE backing to NW force5 by 1pm...
MIA weather is giving Variable force 3 backing to WNW force3-4 later in the afternoon...
SD Weather is giving SSE Force 4 backing to NW Force 7........
What do you think guys??? Who is available for Round 2 so if the weather looks good, we can go for it.
I'm available.....
Robby you have carte blanche on this one in terms of organisation, seems there will still be a small number of boats taking part and this week I have the graveyard shift in addition to my normal working day along with a super busy weekend. However if the weather pans out I suggest you guys go for it, and everyone to liaise with Robby for details etc.
Otherwise looks like some time over the Easter break.
First we'll see who can take part, then the weather, but... I'll insist for a, no Skip no party... It would not be the same without eagle 1 on VHF.
:) I should def be free over the Easter break
I hope to be ready for Easter, not with shanook but we will see.........
Easter break sounds good for me, it seems the best time for most of the guys.
Whatever the majority of the members want, I will go with the flow. The more the merrier.
Captain Gus
We should have done this today the, was superb !!! you cannot ask for any better this time of the year :(
had lessons today rennie...... hopefully next weekend
sunday 11th april is looking good for round 2 on windfinder..... who is available?
SOJ is up for it.
Seems to have gone quiet with referencne to Round 2, as Robert says the weather is looking okay for this Sunday, come on guys lets give it a go. Knowing my luck, you will probably have round two, between the 12 and 26 of April, while I am back n the U.K.
If anyone would like anything bringing back, as long as it does not weigh much or take up much suitcase room, then please let me know and I will try my best to bring it back.
Captain Gus..
I m in for the competition
With that wind forecasted on saturday I very much doubt it will be good on Sunday. Last saturday wasn't too good either - quite rough in the early morning on the outside as i went all the way from st pauls bay to filfla to "try out" the boat :) (at least that's what I told my better half but it was more of trying out jigging stuff and lures! :))!
Lets have a list of those who would like to participate, at this time of year the weather is a last minute call whether to go or not.... so, better be prepared just in case the weather turns out to be ok....
Participents:
SOJ Crew:robby017
Fortuna Crew: ?
?Benri?
99% I'm out again guys, laying tiles at home and trying to get my dad's boat ready for viewing next week. If the weather is good, go for it.
sunday is still looking decent....... hope you make it skip.......
I dont think it will be rob, after 4 days with wind force 5-6 NE!!I think there will be 1.5 to 2 mtrs swell on sunday!!Lets hope not!
thats why i said decent and not perfect or good........ we'll just have to wait and see.....
IT's blowing blowing and blowing again this weekend
with this weather, round 2 will end up being held in albacore season...... lol ..... we wait and see.......
i'm still in no 1 position hahaha
And the winner is .......................... ;D
The Weather by the looks of things!!
definately........ its planning on keeping us on the rock......
