I need to change the drag washers in a penn commander pro reel. If possible I would also like to upgrade to something of better quality. does anyone know from where I could buy some and what should I ask for, part number or something?

Benri - I am going to send my reels for repairs and maintenance to a guy in the UK. I do not know if he's good cos I just got to know about this chap today- none of my reels have been properly maintained for several years which is not good eh... they have given me excellant service but the day will come when one of them will snap. i am sorry I cannot help you out with the drag washers, no idea about this but Skip has given you a lead I guess.
If anyone knows a knowledgeable & dependable reel repairer in Malta pls. let me know. On another point.....Benri I note that the logo/small pic under your posting is a "hubly bubly" or Argille as it is called. I am curious to know why you picked this interesting smoking apparatus generally used in Arabic countries & which I have "had to??" experience a few times in the past.

Colin - I'm taking a que out of your last post, asking if someone in Malta is knowledgeable enough to take apart reels (dismantle) service and assemble again.  Apart from myself, the only other person I would trust my reels with is Nick (skip).  His knowledge goes beyond that of anyone I know on reels and functionality of reels.  However, if you're mechanically minded, which I am assuming you are...there are numerous tutorials on the web how to dismantle and reassemble reels, including your own Avet's.  I always do my reels myself.  Each year I take them apart, wipe of the grease, and re grease...every two years or so, the drag washes come off, in spected, replaced if necessary, and reassembled.  Its not a tough job, but its a job that requires alot of patience.

I read Alan Tani's step by step guides on reel repair www.alantani.com and got the necessary greases and Cal's drag grease from the USA thanks to SteveGB who personally 'escorted them' to Malta as they don't always send things like oils and greases overseas.

The biggest problem is time! Which at the moment I don't have......for bearings try SKG in Mosta, take the old bearing along and you should be able to get exactly what you need, get them dry and then pack with grease or ReelX yourself depending what you want to achieve (freespool) or complete protection.

From the various guides that Alan has done even brand new reels need maintenance but I always tend to wait 1 season to use them straight out the box first. This winter I have quite a project to overall all my reels Alan Tani style.

Thank you guys for your kindness in responding to my reel repair issue and encouraging me to get on with it. I have no intention of asking Joe or Nick to repair & maintain my reels cos I understand that you chaps are totally occupied with your jobs, your own reel upkeep, MFF and family. Ghandek ragun Joe I have to get down to it and have lots of patience, din naqra iebsa hi. I have loads of tools, some being rather fine and probably suitable for the job. These days I do have time on my hands so I might as well get going and do something useful. I'll practice on an old Mitchell reel that has been good to me but is now a "museum piece".  Provided that I am successful I'll have a go with the other equipment that I currently use. It's a shame that I have not properly maintained my reels. Thanks Nick for Alan Tani's web site. I have had a peep and it appears that it's based on a similar format as the MFF, very interesting. Freedive has given me a great idea by placing a large piece of brown paper on a table and lining the parts in the dismantling order, otherwise how can I get all those tiny parts back together!!!
Here's a start...I do have a few tubes of ReelX lubricating grease that I brought over from the States but which have stayed intact for a number of years!!

Caldaland / Shanook – Correct Shisha is the Arabic version of the "Hubly Bubly" – nice things to use and very relaxing with different fruity "coal" aromas emitted by the tobacco but one has to be a little cautious cos some friendly Arab may ask you to have a drag after he's been at it for some time then sticks the chewy  "tip" of the water - pipe in your mouth! &&&& I'll look out for the MV Shisha should Benri try his luck around our area.
