Since i am currently modding my boat,(new engine, electricity, ect) i recently decided to install a fishfinder. i am all way down to garmin, cause many praise their technology. however, when i enquired with medcom for a garmin 400c, they gave me a price of 485 euros including transducer,

as opposed to another website i know, i could get it with all accessories for a mere 275 euros tax included

Since i am going to get it from abroad, whoever is interested can buy from the same site, gust pm. i am seeking for no profit whatsoever, just pm me and you get the site

with regards to a gps, ganni from the forum instructed me to get a handheld. probably will buy that from malta because of the map, and i won't spend too much

if you could recommend me a good handheld gps it would be heavily appreciated
Good season so far.....

Handheld GPS's don't normally have maps. A good unit which is very reasonably priced (overseas) is the Garmin GPS 72. If I'm not mistaken quite a few members of the forum own one including me. I got mine from the US but at the moment I think you could get a good price from the UK considering the rate of exchange.

I assure you bernie that the good hand held gps's take a map, the cheap once however don't, eg the eagle have a model that just costs about Lm38 oviously it doesn't take a map. there are a couple of lowrance hand helds ranging from black and white to colour display and the same for garmin.  The difference is that garmin gps's dn't take the map as a chippa. you install it from a cd to your computer and to your gps. and you cant copy the cd, don't even think of that lol.  don't know for the lowrance but for the garmin you can install your map on the pc and save any way points there as a back up.  you can also view the map maybe in search of new spots.

i have the garmin 60CsX. and another advantage of having a cd instead of a chippa is that you have a much larger map and you can also get of the whole world

Yes ganni, you're right about the maps... I don't know how practical they are in such a small size though. But with new technology you cannot tell!

You'll see them coming sometimes but personally I think FF are more for bottom fishing and when trolling locating that ridge/drop off that you want to troll over and knowing the depth. I don't really see them as a tool for trolling, and rarely given how Albacore/tuna come from the sides can u use them to your advantage, except maybe if you see a shoal at a specific depth and want to try and get your lures as close to them as possible.

Well for trolling as u said skip, if u fish the edges u have a better chance. also u will be able to see the changes in water temperature that makes a difference as well.
Also u mention finding and locating the deep keeping shoals, that will be helpful if u want to do a spot of jigging. Knowing the depth to jig.
Good luck

Forgot to add, for motivation they're great! Can't tell you the number of times my FF has gone off with a picture of a nice large shoal of fish and I thought game on! At least it keeps you entertained as well :)
