Malta Maritime site (http://www.mma.gov.mt/notices_mariners.asp) has a notice saying that fireworks will be let off tonight and throught the weekends from a Barge at tal ghazzelin.
It also orders moored boats to be displaced between in a radius of 200 metres. This practically means that all boats moored at ta l Ghazzelin needs to be removed (between 18.30 and 22.30). Can anyone explain to me and reason things out in this island of ours? Can someone explain why all the discomfort to the aged, animals, uninterested, non believers ... and now boat owners? I think this is outrageous - its a good thing I don't moor by boat there... but if I did.. I would not have appreciated the village feast!!!!!

it is done for saftey reasons, it up to you if you want to leave the boat there or not now, evreyone have his hobies and needs to practise it from somewhere, 200 meteres is tha law we are facing now from where we launch fireworks, this means that we have to be 200 meter away from a residential area even if there is a single man living in a 1 room house.

yes, everyone has his hobbies and needs to practise them however, without bothering others.... OIM
At least from the chart the barge seems quite far out and I don't think or rather hope it will not effect moored boats!
I'd rather be fishing.....

the barges can move but the moorings cannot move. so the most sensible thing to do is to put the barges at least 200 mtrs away from the mooring and not the other way round you move the moorings away from the moorings. come on guys it doesn t need a lot of thinking to come to this conclusion

Kevin G

it doesn't say to move the mooring but to stay away from the barage in the time of launching. 200 mtrs is a reasonbale distance for safety.

@ Kevin G  according to this quote all the boats moored at ta l ghazzenin has to be removed. so if they made the barges further out there wouldn t be the need to move these moored boats. if the owners hasn t got a place were to leave his boat on land at this time of the year or one of the boat owners is servicing his trailer and he cant get the boat out of the water what will they do ?

busu if there is a wind force of 3-4 the left over can cross across the village and more. yes i know its a problem one has to face if there is a someone who hae a certian problem where to park the boat of beacuse of the trailor. for me the boats can stay where they are because firing tubes are normaly positoned to the other side of the bay so when the shell is fired it explode on top of the barge so less danger to other ares.

what I think is that the owners of the boat are being made responsible for anything that possibly can go wrong. I am sure insurance will not cover any possible damage. Accordingly therefore, the organisers are waived off any liability and the boat owners are left with all the risk or move the boats away and moor them back at about midnite.... Cheers... u leeeeeeeee

If they leve the boats moored and there is an order not to leave boats moored and something goes wrong with the boat its up to the owner to pay the damage, but the insurence cover evreything that can get damged, like the golf course last saturday if it is fault of the fireworks factory the incurense have to pay evreything. If one doesn't have any insurence supporting him no permit will be given to burn fireworks.
