Spinning from land

Hi guys im new to spinning techniques beacuse i usually like trolling but lately i am becoming interested in spinning from land. I do have a good rood for spinning and as for spinners/ lures i do have a big lot. Do you think spinning from the breakwater area is good? right under fort st elmo facing the tigne side?

I have tried that site a couple of times. Productivity can be very variable.

Hi bigboy, if you like trolling you should also try spinning from a boat. I think the Americans call it popping as they tend to use surface popping lures which they cast out. Otherwise you can also do jigging from a boat using jig lures. It's something I want to try this year as last year we kept coming across areas full of tuna but they werent going for the trolling lures. When you stop and chum a bit you could see them everywhere, so would have been great to pop and jig a bit and see if that was more productive. Another advantage when having a spinning rod handy is as you are pulling in your catch and the rest of the shoal are following you can cast a lure out and retreive it.

Bigboy, be carefull when you go fishing over there, under St Elmo. Spinning there while people will be fishing for kahli, you might end up in a quarrel. I suggest you go there iether in the evening or when there are calm waters. Take care of your car!!!!!

Its no problem at all!!! Its the same EVERYWHERE! Simply,Don't go right next to people who are fishing for kahli!!!
The reason is they spend a very long time throwing in ground bait prior to fishing,so you can understand them getting pissed off,if after all that work someone comes along and chucks a lure in the water right next to you! Although id never condone someone messing with someone else's car..i solve my problems face to face.

Another thing is kahli are a challenge to catch as they are VERY easily spooked! Sometimes when you are fishing for them even if you loose one (after being hooked) you can scare the whole shoal away!
Give the kahli fisherman a wide berth & you'll have no problems! I never have with them....so far!

guys I tried spinning for my first time this weekend. I went to cirkewwa early in the morning and not even a single bite. Frankly i didn't even see any fish go after my lure. I use a yozuri redhead 15cm 15g. I found my main problem to be able to get some good throwing distance. When I use the paternoster I always get good distances on the throw but with the much lighter lure I struggle a lot. Dunno....maybe the fish were asleep lol or maybe there were too many people fishing in the same spot

15cm is a pretty big lure, not sure what you were targeting. You need to match your lure to the action of your rod. Could be they're not matched up

15cm lure is a bit too big for spinning at cirkewwa although sometimes baracuda see big.If you were fishing correcly witha decent spinning rod and reel you should have made long casts with a 15cm lure because we normally use 9-12cm lures for spinning.

but i think there is more barracuda in the evenings than in the morning because when last friday i went for klamari there were very nice barracuda

And thats the 'problem' up there loads of small bait fish (vopa & voparella) which bring in the squid..and the cuda's have a ready made party!! When there is too much "live bait" its very difficult to get a 'cuda to take a lure!
@divinu Like skip said it could be the lure is not matched to the action of your rod or maybe your using excessively thick line(?) as this will also effect your casting distance drastically.
With a 15cm lure (so im assuming its between 30g-45g) you should be able to cast a fair way's out mate!

Ive fished alot there & at marfa for squid in the past and i used to take a lure along with my squid jigs and occasionally cast for a few 'cudas...And at marfa especially there are (or were at least!) so many small vopa that the cudas were literally launching themselves out of the water when the were attacking them! No way they'll take any notice of a lure like that...
I eventually caught a few by playing there own game! Basically i got a handfull of live vopa once from a guy who used to fish for them with a large net (nassa kbira) and hooked a few live baited vopa on a 'heavy' running-float set-up...that f***ed 'em!!
