Coming out on Tuesday for 1 week at Golden Bay with car hire. Any tips on what gear to bring, what methods and where to go to have any chance of catching decent fish would be welcome. Is it worth bringing surfcasting beach gear or stick to telescopic spinning and float rods? Live baiting garfish caught Dorada in Crete at this time of year - would it work in Malta?

Thanks for that - for 6 days I will leave the surf gear and bring the spinning gear. Any recommended deep water marks?

Bring a soft tipped float rod, with a couple of oval bubble floats, some size 10 spade ends, & some 8lb flourocarbon, fish the hook on 4ft of 8lb, with a small piece of worm on the hook. Cast as far as you can, reel in quickly for 5-6 turns then slow it right down, & watch for the gars to follow the bait & strike it. We fished next to the gas tanks at Marsasloxx, but I reckon any deep water mark should be similar, get hold of Placebo for further information, he's the "MAN"!

Thanks for that Blueskip - similar to what we did in Crete but we used only a 3 to 5 ft trace and a bit of silver foil just above the worm. Had to keep it moving to avoid the harbour mullet and other tidlers! We then freelined for Dorado and similar on a 5olb leader with a 4/0 circle hook through the top quarter inch of the back just behind the fin. Would that work in the deep water marks in Malta?

Placebo has sent me a PM and a phone number so I can get in touch. Many thanks both. Fishing makes it a small world!

When you look ino the deep water from some of these marks in Malta, its difficult not to think there could be something "mega" looking back up at you. I have it on good authority that you can at times take dorado, & tuna, from the deep water west coast marks, especially around the Blue Gotto, cant you just imagine hem down there? Next time out I am going to give that area a good going over, & if I dont catch, well I will have tried.
Have a word with Aab131 about his "secret" mullet mugging bait for use in the ports Wink

Great - almost packed but unfortunately its the fishing gear I still have to do and the cases are nearly full! I think I will have to limit myself to a couple of smallish telescopic 20-40 oz rods and small reels. The beachcaster and reel is too heavy- but we will see! I am reserving Saturday morning! See you all!

In passing we are interested in  low cost self catering rooms for two close to the sea and fishing for out of main season use but when fishing is good. Any tips appreciated -as we'd like to see some nthis week. From what we have seen we would like to make regular visits - perhaps leaving some of the gear and tackle there for the next time!
