does the old fisherman's technique of trolling really work for some fish or is it just jargon . the one where you see them jigging there hand front and back to attract fish. cause i thing in this forum is never mentioned.

in old days many fisherman used to use the feathers as their first lures. Quite an amazing technique looking to how it evolved nowadays with the use of artificial baits and plastic lures!

Still the use of such feathers is a killer to some predatory fish!

i do find that when using some kind of feather lures it is very important to strike back and forth.
the fishing gods might have something for me tomorrow I'll be fishing

pupu actually it's mentioned in several places!! However in maltese it's called rejjex, and sometimes people refer to this technique using handlines; a rixa.

I posted this detailed advice in the premium members board which unfortunately you can only see if you become a premium member, here's a quick summary which came from our friends in the US who find it very effective:

Rather than just sit and watching your lures, pick up a rod and jig it as you're trolling (tip down to the water and long stroke), basically what Maltese people have been doing for years on a handline, rixa!

If you hook up a fish and still have rods/handlines in the water, jig it to get more hookups. Place the rod tip down almost in the water and then use a long stroke bringing it up a bit like blipping the throttle which some skippers like to do.

It's the most popular method when using hand lines for Lampuki (dorado/dolphin fish) as it effectively simulates a fish being chased where they tend to dart about.

I like to use the hand action when fishing with light feathers of spinners for kahli and cervjol. Sometimes its a habbit thet when having a handline in your hadns you make use of that action

Bigboy is it accurate to describe that jigging motion with your hand as rejjex? As you know Maltese is not my forte! ?

LapsiBoy

Yes skip, when where trolling for lampuki and a fad is coming closer we always sa ''Rejjex..Rejjex..''
I think it also helps the fish to hook up and i just love the filling of  the fish hitting your bait just when you pull on the line :D

busumark

lapsiboy explained it exactly. i think everyone says rejjex rejjex to his fishing mate when approaching an fad. and nothing beats that first pull on the handline.

the idea of (Rejjex)jerking the lure is for a reason. if u see a squid or am octopus swimming it opns its arms and then when it propells itself forwad closes the again. So u have this opening and closing of the tentacles, with a small pause in between.
Thats what we imitate when re jerk the lure for and back. If its feathers they open and close jut like the tentacles.
Also the forward motion helps to set the hook.

pupu

thanks for the reply , so u think that if you are trolling with plastic fish with no feathers the teqnique will be useless or do u prefer using it just the same

Just to add to this.  Like any other predator, the least effort used to catch the prey, the less energy wasted.  All predators will go for a 'lame duck'.  They will target the slowest, the weakest, the injured.  So, when a fish is injured, it does not swim in an orderly fashion, but tends to swim in jerks, hence the jerking action!  That being said, what 'rejjex' is trying to emulate is an injured fish swiming away from the predator.

pupu rejjex with whatever lure u are using except the rapala big lips (deep divers) at least it gives u something to do when not catching anything. And u strengthen ur arm muscles which will come in handy.........
