this is a must for most trolling fanatics
there are a few available on internet
not many available locally

i have a trick which works well

a plastic box (sized to suit your boat )
a 12 volt water pump (available from most marine suppliers )

what you do is place the box on the back end of the boat
have a flexible pipe fixed to the box side about 3/4 of the way up from the bottom
the pipe is on overflow
have the 12 volt pump situated on the lid with one end in the box and the other in the sea behind the boat.

This works well both when you are moving and when you are stopped
it can also be used to leave a burly or scent trail behind the boat

good luck if you have any other ideas or suggestions let me know!

Interesting post. I was searching for something small and not expensive for my 14 footer and this seems to be a good idea.

Make sure that the pump is not a high volume pump. the idea is to have fresh oxygenated water not to cause a Niagara falls or a rapid. Also try to get a container that doesnt let light in, the darker (i dont mean painted black) it is the better.

been there done it LOL

:) Thanks Tony will keep it in mind. Why does the container need to be light free?

so that the fish remain calm and less heat transfer to the water

As regards calmness it may be the case, but cannot understand how there is less heat transfer to the water. It has always been a fact that dark material or objects, example a dark T-shirt, absorbes more heat. So???!!!!

Should be painted with a heavy coat, silver or white from the outside.

whoever said dark as Black..... as a matter of fact i wrote QUOTE ''a container that doesnot let light in, the darker (i dont mean painted black) the better'' UNQUOTE.
If it is white, silver or whatever as long as it does not let light in then the water inside doesnt heat up. It can be silver on the outside but if light still penetrates then the water heats up since it is an enclosed small space. KAPIX

I would make more sure that you have a ventilated lid  - for the overflow function to work the tank has to have access to air.

Shanook is 100% correct on this although it is not that much of an issue if you will have a continuos recycle of water. If you have squid, no matter what tank, you need a continous recycle. Mullet on the other hand needs no water change, just aeration plus I have managed to keep mullet in fresh water - (It is possible, YES). Mullet and cuttlefish as a bait are the hardest to wear out. The worst in my opinion is Garfish (it does not die in the tank, but when fishing it only lives max for 3-4hrs (although most of the time we do get it hunted 8)). Squid is ok - the way in the middle

On my boat, I fitted a transistor switch that I can regulate the intermittance of the pump. This saves on the strain on battery life although not an issue to me - but can be for other boats

Also, for water pumps the 360gph or 500gph (I would use this bilge pump as you have a lift of approx 1m and the better the flow are perfect) - The best trick I found is that you have a pipe that deviates the inflow. At the same time you oxegenate the water, just like it happens in home aquariums.

Naturally, you have to adapt the overflow as necessary. Personally, I utilise the Blue plastic tanks used for longlines - Always did the trick and the bait remains alive. Their biggest advantage over coolers is that they take less horizontal space, the overflow function works very neatly and you would experience little spills in rough seas. Also, I get them for free.

Their disadvantage is that if you have some cuttle fish as bait they sit on the bottom and can be a little messy to get them up he he...

As Granitu rightly stated, those blue plastic tanks,do have advantages, but unfortunately, they have one big disadvantage.
The surface area, for gas exchange is somewhat limited compared with flatter tanks, and so,holding less fish in comparision. There are ways to compensate but too complicated to explain here.

i have found a way around that cal and not as difficult you may think. use the round tanks. besides for live baiting you only need 7-8 fish. garish may be a problem  but again i have a way i d
