MEDITERRANEAN SEA FISHES
By Rio Sammut.

Fish Book

'Mediterranean Sea Fishes' is a fish encyclopaedia published by Rio Sammut, Ph.C., B.Pharm. It is A4 in size, and contains 213 pages packed full of valuable information, 280 monochrome distinctive and scientifically accurate pen drawings by the author, and 16 full colour charts depicting about 300 different fish species that inhabit the sea around Malta. There is at least one picture in almost every page, together with some photos of memorable catches.

The attractive book provides a full scientific classification of all the common, and not so common, Mediterranean fishes, together with the scientific name of each species, besides the English, Italian, and Maltese names. The normal maximum weight and size of each fish species are also included, next to each drawing. At the back there is a glossary of all the unfamiliar scientific terms used, the bibliography, and a complete index of all the fish names applied by the author.

This work is a modified and improved version of the previous edition 'Fishes of Maltese Waters', which was a huge success and sold out in one summer! It is enriched with attractive front and back cover photos and interesting data about the appearance, habits and habitat of each fish species.

The encyclopaedia 'Mediterranean Sea Fishes' is a must for all fishermen and anglers, divers and sea-farers, as well as for melitensia collectors and science teachers and environmentalists. It supersedes all previous editions about the subject and exposes the latest, up-to-date information about the life-style and characteristics of all the species described. It provides an accurate and quick on-the-spot reference to the identification of any fish seen or captured around the Maltese Islands and makes most interesting reading in a light hearted manner.

To make this publication more interesting, the book includes a poem, ?See the Sea?, by the author, that has gained international recognition for achievement at www.poetry.com and has been published in an international poetry book called A Grasp at Eternity (ISBN 0-7951-5052-0). There is also a most interesting preface and introduction at the front pages, which are bound to help the reader to appreciate better the full value of this masterpiece.

The book is available at all leading booksellers and fishing tackle or diving equipment shops in Malta, and sells at a reasonable price. Further information can be obtained by email.[/b]

Dear Simon,

Thanks for your comments. What you refer to as 'latin names' are not latin at all .... they are scientific names.

With such a voluminous encyclopaedia, containing about 100,000 words, it is virtually impossible not to have a few spelling mistakes! My apologies for missing them in spite of editing the text a hundred times over.

Please note that fish sizes quoted are only approximate, as explained in the preface of the book. Besides, they refer to Mediterranean fishes, not to world records!

I am currently working on another fish book dealing with amateur fishing in Maltese seas.

Happy fishing to one and all!
