This council regulation is automatically binding in all EU member states including Malta. Note that member states can impose certain additional rules therefore we suggest you check with the Ministry for Rural Affairs and the Environment for any new additions that apply locally.

Summary for recreational fishery:

Minimum size: 30 kgs or 115cm
Catch Limit: 1 per boat per trip

Fish cannot be sold for profit, but can be donated for charitable purposes.

All undersized fish must be released.

01 May 2009 - Update

Please note that locally recreational and sport fishers are no longer allowed to retain on board Bluefin Tuna, even if the fish is over 30kgs unless they have been issued a permit by the VRFCC, Malta.

If you have been issued with such a permit, you are currently permitted to catch up to 50kgs during the season (2009 Season 16th June - 14th October), min size 30kgs/115cm.

All catches must be reported to the VRFCC and landed at the following designated points Mgarr Gozo, Marfa, Valletta and Marsaxlokk after providing 4 hours pre-notification to allow officers to be present.

Severe penalties will be imposed upon those who do not abide by the stipulated conditions.
