Go to Mr Fish, they have some great Tica reels ideal for jigging.

keep in mind that for jigging you will need a braid friendly reel !

I just bought an Okuma for jigging, quite heavy, but should do fine for now, besides its not too expensive.

Neville if you can go try the shimano saragosa 8000.. it's a bit pricey but mannnnnnnnnnnnn  ;)
A woman who has never seen her husband fishing, doesn't know what a patient man she married !

There is no such thing as too much equipment.

The Saragosa is a great reel and for all day jigging on reasonably sized fish the 8000F is more than enough. I have the 18000F and it's not light which makes a day's jigging quite tiring.....but at least if I hit into a 20-30kgs AJ or similar I know the reel will take it and I won't run out of line.

I also have a Penn Spinfisher SSm 850 which I picked up for $90 excl shipping....no where near as refined or well built as a Saragosa but nontheless a good reel. The 850 is quite big, similar in size to a Shimano 14000 just so you're forewarned.

I was thinking of buying a saragosa but then a new reel came out, Ryobi AP 8ower.  i read a number of good reviews about it in italian forums, some of which stated that it is also a bit better than the saragosa.  it is a new generation of the ryobi applause which also made a good hit with italian jiggers.  i got the 8000 size, a bit larger than the shimano 8000.  i've found it great till now, we'll se when the big ones hit

Guys, i'm looking around for a jigging rod. What do you think are the best contenders at the current moment?

What's your budget Lapsiboy.......you've basically got around ?55-65.......then around ?85-?95, rods around ?110-?125 and on upwards.

LapsiBoy

Not too much skip, but I always prefare spendinge something more for a little more.  Just forget the 110-125 ones since im still at school :P

For around ?85 the Tica JigMaster are nice one piece rods......I bought mine from misterfish, ratings up to 150g, another model up to 250g and he's also getting up to 300g.

The one I have is a 90-250g which I think is a very versatile rod. That is currently out of stock but should be in within the next couple of weeks.

Okuma also have the Cedros Jigging rods for around ?115 from Ta'Bormla not sure if they offer a discount, but we are trying to get them into the forum discount scheme so you should get 10% off.

Went jigging again today but no luck. I did get a scare at one point when I hooked the bottom. Must have been a wreck or something as it got from 90 metres straight to 70 metres and back to 90 in 10 metres. Lost one of my jigging lures unfortunately, and still no luck. I'm not sure I quite know how to jig yet.

do not leave jig on the bottom. as soon as it touches sea bed initiate your retrieval.

first four strikes are crucial for dentex.

i lost around 6 jigs so far ..........................
the fishing gods might have something for me tomorrow I'll be fishing

I lost one on that trip.......I got very excited gave a nice big yank to 'set the hook' and boy did I set the hook in the bottom/rock!! There was no way of getting it out and it took alot of pulling with the braid wrapped around the cleat to get the braid-fluoro connection to break!!

Lost around ?30 worth of terminal tackle including the jig

OKUMA-1976

skip well done for the dentex

soon ta bormla will have the okuma cedros reel in stock..
