please help, is the lure tied directly to the main line, or via a swivel, or with a leader, ie stronger length of line, would be greatfull for any tips or diagrams. also apart from the dustbin what would a 5mtr telescopic rod be good for, had it years and never used it, many thanks. ??? ??? ???

You normally tie your lure to the leader, and attach this leader to the mainline via a snapon swivel.  The swivel will reduce the risk of line twist, especially if or when the lure starts rotating.  The leader material is often different in quality from your mainline monofilament.  Characteristics of a good leader should be that it is less stretch resistant, abbrazive resistant, and preferably, invisible (flourocarbon leader).  As regards you 5mtr telescopic rod, you did not mention whether its a pole rod or a rod that accomodates a reel.  For pole rods, some good rock/jetty fishing can be achieved with a 5mtr pole.  If its a reel rod, then you can can use it for beach/rock casting, and to a certain extent spinning.  I hope this answers your query.

thanks gaffer, its a rod that takes a reel, the reason fot these questions is the water is a bit clear at the moment for pole fishing, around st pauls bay that is, so i thought i would give spining a go.

if you have a fine 5mtr telescopic rod that takes reel, it is ideal to fish with a running float or with a light ledger weight on the bottom in harbours.... i had a 5 meter one, but it snapped.... the brand was trabucco, i sure miss that rod.... still haven't found a suitable replacement....

It depends on the 5 meter rod action! what weight does it manage? For spinning from land you rather use a swivel so you can chande the lures easily.I fish using the main line from the reel tie a swivel and there you go and there are others who use leaders. It's your choice.

guys... what knot do you use to tie the lure to the fluoro and the swivel to the braid ?
and what swivels are best, when it comes to brand, colour and size?

cheers

I use the uni to uni knot to link the braid and leader (fluoro/mono) and never had any trouble with it :)
If im understanding you right,do you link the braid and fluoro with a swivel? If thats the case, id personally advise against it,as winding a swivel through the rod rings (esp the tip ring!) won't do them any favours in the long run.
Imho buy a decent snap locking swivel and attach it to your lure and uni to uni knot to join the braid and leader at least thats the way i do it when i use a swivel on a lure.

But if you prefer using your method then use a small thin clip or ball bearing swivel.Angler Centre in g'mangia have some good japanese make of swivels 'NGLR' which are very sturdy in my experience. They are black in colour...not this makes any difference :)

thanks for your reply martin,
this morn i joined the brain & fluoro using the uni knot, and at the end of it a rolling swivel. (using the clinch knot)
and to the lure attached the snap swivel. hope i got it correct :)

cheers!

Np mate! :) Any luck jew?
Don't worry its not a case of getting it correct or not..imho you should always try things out for yourself 1st! & personally speaking ive found there is always something new to learn about fishing!!
But if i understood you right and you were tying the swivel to join your leader-to-braid then its is quite easy to reel the swivel into the rod & eventually you'll damage your rod rings like this (esp. if your fishing @ night or the early hours of the morning) & that was the only reason i mentioned it tbh!
Actually,if the rod rings have quite a small diameter then even the uni to uni knot will sometimes catch on the rings on these type's of rods... never mind a swivel! :)
If your rod is like this then try use a shorter a leader to avoid this as much as possible.

When you are tying knots for the first time get two pieces of the same material u are going to use and try it out. Then try out a breaking test. That is hook ur snap to a scale and pull hard do not jerk but an even pull and see if u made a good job. This is particularly effective when tying braid to mono cause if u dont make a good knot u see it slip and burn the mono.....
