they also come in several different colours, as noz says they are made to imitate real maggots, except for the wriggling, and real ones dont wriggle for long, also artificial blood worms, look and feel great. p.s. well said noz.

noztheviking

JUST DONT TELL EM WHERE REAL BLOOD WORMS COME FROM MIKE, IF THEY THINK A FEW MAGGOTS ARE BAD, YOU CAN GET BERKLEY RAG WORMS AND LUG WORMS AS WELL AS LOADS OF OTHER STUFF, THE ARTIFCIAL BREAD IS SUPERB FOR MULLET, ITS DEAD SOFT LIKE REAL BREAD BUT REALLY TOUGH AND DOES NOT FLY OFF THE HOOK LIKE REAL BREAD.

not to worry noz my lips are sealed, the bread sounds good its something i allways have problems with.

I have used maggots regularly for some 18 months, mostly in ta' xbiex or sliema nazzarenu and usually early in the morning. I use exactly the same set-up as for farka. Most fish bite on them. They are excellent for zabri and the occassional kahlija (even if the sea is calm!). Other fish caught include sparli, hriebex, a few sargi (when still dark) and quite a few awrat (500 - 700g). Mullet bite as well (and usually swallow too) but much less than on bread. Sawrell like them too but they prefer gambli tal-friza or pieces of fish.

Main advantages:
1. Same set-up as farka, including hooks. When the mullett are not biting, I switch to maggots for some time.
2. They can be added to the ghalf.
3. Relatively cheap and they keep well in fridge for up to 3-4 weeks. I use the 'old' one for ghalf.
4. BEST OF ALL: They are not attacked by tisfijja- voparella, tartarella etc but tiny zabri can be a problem!

i may need some help on this noz, but has anyone tried using maggots when they turn to lava, just before hatching, they are called casters in the uk, and very popular,

noztheviking

hi mike yes we do use casters for the fishing, they are the stage after the maggots, and before they turn to flys, you can use them in two ways, firstly when they turn they can be floaters or sinkers, and trhe shell is very brittle and they can be difficult to put on the hook, most of the time you have to use a small hook and bury it in side the caster, you can use them for sea fishing, and they are good for mullet, on the surface, I should imagine that they would be OK to use them on vopi over there in Malta, By the way the best way to keep real casters is to put them in to a poly bag, tie the neck of the bag and bung em in the fridge, dont freeze em cos they go rotten. hope that helps

what type of maggots are the best type for the bottom fishing??
Sejjer ghal tal qiegh!!

noztheviking

ARE YOU ASKING WHAT TYPE OF MAGGOTS ARE BEST FOR BOTTOM FISHING IN MALTA, OR IN GENERAL, THE BEST ONES ARE THE BIGGEST MOST LIVELY ONE THAT YOU CAN GET YOUR HANDS ON IN MALTA, OVER HERE IN THE UK WE GENERALY USE A MAGGOT BRED OF THE LARGEST TYPE OF FLY CALLED A BLUE BOTTLE, THESE GIVE A LOVELY BIG SOFT MAGGOT THAT IS IDEAL FOR BOTTOM FISHING, ALSO I DONT KNOW IF YOU CAN GET THEM IN MALTA BUT WE USE THE GRUBS OR MAGGOTS OFF THE COMMON WASP, THESE ARE SUPER FOR ANY KIND OF FISHING, BUT ARE VERY FRAGILE AND DONT LAST LONG IN SEA WATER, AND ARE A PAIN IN THE BUTT WHEN YOU COME TO COLLECT THEM, THEY STING,

noz, i get bigger maggots by using beef heart or pigs liver, i cover them after the first lot of eggs with newspaper to stop any more eggs being laid, but as allways its hit and miss.

trya chicken breast taken off the bones and skinned and do as you do cover after the first blow of eggs but lay the breast on either clean fine sawdust or if you can get it on maize meal its a lot cleaner and less smell plus when the maggots have consumed all the breast, which they do quite quickly, the maggots are lovely and white and have good tough skins on them, also with them being on sawdust or maize they clean themselves in the sawdust.Does any of you in Malta ever use wasp grubs like I asked before,
