simple question. if pirotta" all he sells is crap",how come he has been open before i was even born? btw im 51 year old!
good point but still.....I'll stand to my opinion as even I went I went to buy something from pirotta the only 2 things that I found good were a particular brand of hooks (forgot the brand) and the ninja line...That's it.

mike.d what are artificial maggots?
they are like real maggots with the difference that they are made of plastic :).....

Anyway you only have to slip a hook in them like you do with worms and spin with them but they are not good for small prey like "vopi" you can catch fish like sawrell, awrat etc.... Mind you the way to hook the maggot I mentioned here is for the artificial maggots only... If you want ask Spitec he has a good selection and he can show you in person how to use them.

"Sorry for the names of the fish but I only know them in Maltese"

Reelin

maggots should be put in the fridge otherwise they turn into flies. the warmer the weather the faster they pupate. {turn into flies}.when one takes them out of the fridge they will not move because the metabolism would be very low.that exactly the reason why the are put in cold ambient in the first place.by the time they are taken out of the fridge and ready to be hooked as bait they would have been thawed and very wriggly! btw.they are very good bait especially for kahli

chrifene

Do they hold well when hooked or they come off easily? can they be used for bottom fishing or not?

Thanks.

camkev

Yes they hold well with the hook, they are not that easy to come off if you hook them properly, and yes they can be used for bottom fishing.
Fishing, fishing ,fishing thats all i think about.

caldaland

they do hold well but unfortunately it is not advisable to cast as they are not that strong.they can also be used for bottom fishing but as they are nearly odourless they are not good for deep fishing or night fishing or anywhere where there is lack of light.kahli fishing at night is an exception as this fish can see very well even in nearly pitch black conditions.

chrifene

Thanks caldaland for the info

caldaland

lol. usually in fish, the larger the eye the better the vision. just look at the size of those eyes compared to the body! no wonder the italians call them "occhiata" meaning large eyes!

sharktail

maybe a stupid question...

Are maggots dangerous (in terms of health) if left in the fridge at home with other food?? (obviously closed in their container)  ???

And regarding artificial maggots, I guess these are "less" interesting for fish eh?... as they do not move like real maggots?  :-\

And what about the "worms" found on the rocks? (dawk id-dud li jkunu jigru fuq il-blat?)

10x

Reelin

yep that poped in my mind as well...one thing's for sure i wont tell my wife i've put a box full of baby flies in refrigerator or else i'm dead meat....coming to think about it maggot food...how's that for ironic!  ;D

MAGGOTS ARE NOT DANGEROUS AFTER ALL THEY ARE USED IN MODERN MEDICINE TO CLEAN INFECTED WOUNDS AND ARE MORE EFFECTIVE AND LESS INVASIVE THAN ANTIBIOTICS AND SURGERY, KEPT IN A PROPER CONTAINER IN A FRIDGE THEY PRESENT NO DANGER WHAT SOEVER TO HUMANS, I WAS GOING TO SAY UNLESS YOU WERE TO EAT THEM, BUT THINKING ABOUT THAT STATEMENT, I REALISE THAT ITS TOTALLY WRONG, AFTER THINKING ABOUT THE NUMBER OF MAGGOTS THAT I HAVE SWALLOWED OVER THE YEARS AND I AM STILL GOING STRONG, BEFORE YOU ASK HOW COME I HAVE SWALLOWED MAGGOTS, ITS SIMPLE, IN WINTER WHEN FISHING IN THE COLD WE POP A COUPLE OF MAGGOTS UNDER YOUR TONGUE TO KEEP EM WARM AND KEEP EM WRIGGLEING, AND OR COURSE NOW AND THEN YOU COUGH OR SOMETHING AND DOWN YER NECK GOES A FEW, AND AS FOR ARTIFICIAL MAGGOTS TRY THE BERKERLY POWER BAIT MAGGOTS THEY ARE REALLY GOOD, THEY FEEL LIKE REAL MAGGOTS THEY ARE IMPREGNATED WITH THE SMELL OF REAL MAGGOTS AND THEY CATCH FISH. I KNOW I USED THEM ON THE JETTY AT ST, PAULS BAY AND CAUGHT MULLET BREAM VOPI AND QUITE A FEW OTHERKINDS OF FISH THAT I DONT KNOW THE NAMES OF, I DONT KNOW IF THERE IS ANY WHERE YOU CAN GET THEM FROM IN MALTA COS THE LAST LOT I BROUGHT OVER FOR A FRIEND WHO LIVES IN MALTA
