The big Alungi comp has been scheduled early in June because we were late this year when the weather let us down. I would rather aim for early June (especially with the public holiday) and if the Alungi are in and the weather is good we'll go for it, otherwise we will have more flexibility to postpone.

This year's Alungi competition looks to be even bigger than last years in terms of prizes that will be up for grabs.....stay tuned for more info and get those boats ready early this year :)

UPDATE: The Alungi comp is basically scheduled for June......rather than settle on exact dates it could be any Sunday in June and will depend on the weather and whether the fish have come in. Dates will be confirmed later on.

whats this gonna be skip? trolling? bottom fishing? jigging? as less than a month to the date so better to start preping the boats and gear.

If you mean Feb Coastal.......Let's get some feedback.....

Jigging and Bottom Fishing Would be interesting but I don't want to exclude trolling per se.....

Would it be feasible in your opinions to leave it open - Trolling, Jigging, Rod Bottom Fishing. No long lines?

robby017

well, if its not a competition, i guess anything goes, we just make sure all fish caught and kept are in line with the legal size requirements. Also, which part of the island will this be set? when you say coastal, say, up to 2 miles out or? better to start discussing this as time flies by rather quickly....

We could have something similar as the competition held last year. Though i would recomend that we leave port at around 11 or 12 am and end the competition at around 6pm

Will open a topic in the relevant section to discuss.

Nick I know it's a bit early but June is only 6 weeks away and time is rolling quite fast..... shall we be prepared in case alungi gets closer early june as they did last year ?

Past experience has shown us that the presence of Alongi along the west coast increase in presence to towards the 3rd week of June till the 2nd week of July.  Last year Alongi did come close by the 2nd week of June, but then dissapeared, only to appear sporadically.  The Forum Alongi competition held last year showed that with only a few participants reporting single catches.  The ideal time for the competition is when the presence peaks.  Another important factor to consider is the weather.

I would say we should be aiming for the 13th June, unless we have really strange weather and the Alungi come in and stay in earlier. We will be working hard on this over the next few weeks.

It's true Joe and I agree 100% but as you pointed out as well last year the alungi came close to shore earlier and we have to prepared in case it happens again ( unlikely but not impossible ).

I think the earlier the better as over the past five years they seem to be coming in earlier .  I was thinking spearo comp end may as in june heavy boat traffic starts and we should keep in our minds safty as it will be aj season and most of us will be on reefs.
