Never fished in ireland but i have fished for trout, salmon and esp. pike in the uk.
I would say try fly fishing as this is the most productive method for trout and salmon, but it requires a very fine casting skill which is VERY hard to master, especially for a beginner.
Also whenever your fishing in a foreign country a little local knowledge makes a huge difference!!! My advice is go to the irish repository of fishing knowledge...The nearest pub!!! At least if the fishing dosen't go well at first you can have a pint of guiness to lift your spirits Smiley

i fished in irelan 2 years ago....both in river and lake in Kilarney...caught some nice trout..i would suggest you to go to a tackle shop and ask for a good  guide (Ghillie) he provides you with anything u want and they're quite cheap to hire if u never fished over there

I fished in ireland last summer.  Before you go check the fishing seasons for the time you're going because salmon is protected in certain times of the year.  Also in certain rivers/lakes only flyfishing is permitted, so check well before you go.  Having said that, I would suggest that you should try flyfishing, after some practice you should learn how to do some casting.

Before you go check what permits and licences you require, especially if you are fishing in northern Ireland
