I guess there are some recommended 'blends' for specific fish, and obviously mixes you can buy in shops, but I'm guessing making up ground bait with a variety of textures is the key and the blend depends on what you're targetting. If you're after bottom fish I guess a mix that sinks quick would be the answer, combined with something that initially floats and then sinks as it breaks up. Bread comes to mind for that.

Something that floats initially for quite a long time before slowly breaking up and sinking would be something like dog/cat biscuits which we've used offshore and work well.

Not sure what might sink straight away, but in our mix we want oily stuff to create a slick, then you can throw in cheap cat food mackeral etc.

For inshore fishing not sure what is recommended.

As Skip said,it depends on the species. For bottom fish such as Sargi I use ground-bait from Mr Fish called Extasi. You don't even need to add water to it - just work the bait with your hands to form balls which you throw into the sea . Try to throw them next to the area where you are casting ,as they sink quite fast.  As a "general" ground bait I just put a lot of old loaves of bread ( NOT moudly ones !!!) in the sun to dry for a few days until they are rock-hard. Then I just break them up with a hammer until they become really fine granules of bread , which then I mix with grated cheese or maybe sardine oil and whatever mixes you can think of . I like to mix the bread with the Extasi ready-made mix as well, I find it produces good results.
